Delightful Fall Hikes

Pillsbury Mountain (Central Adirondacks).

Located in the Jessup River Wild Forest, North of Spectulator, offers great views of West Canada Wilderness, Cedar River Flow, Moose River Plains, Spectulator Tree Farm, Siamese Pond Wilderness. Should be close to peak foliage now. Consider camping at the roadside/tent campsites along Mason Lake to the North on Jessup River Road / NY 30. Take NY 30 to Jessup River Road to Military Road to Parking Area to get there. You may want to park at the start of Military Road if you have a low-clearance vehicle.

 Hogsback State Forest

Hadley Mountain (Southern Adirondacks).

Located near Stony Creek, NY, it offers some great views of the Wilcox Lake Wild Forest and the Great Scanadaga Lake. I’ve never been there in the fall, but I suspect it offers many great views this time of year, with peak foliage being not far away.

Gully

Buck Mountain (West Shore Lake George, Adirondacks)

This is one of my most recent hikes, but definately offers really good views of Lake George and elsewheres, especially now that the fall colors are starting to set on in. One of the more difficult hikes on the list, it’s not really that difficult, but if you go from Pilot Knob, expect a 3.1 mile hike, and gaining around 2,100 feet in elevation. Regardless, a very nice hike.

When Thanksgiving Falls, 2000 to 2099

41 Degrees

Today’s average high is supposed to be 41 degrees.
Much warmer then the cold weather of recent.

Snowy Day!

41 degrees may not be warm
but it’s warm enough to be melting the snow.

It may be cold and snowy today,

A Winter Picture Break

I don’t know about you, but I am getting awful tired of the cold. Winter seems to drag on much too long. But to remind us that there is such thing as hope, and that it will be really nice out in a few months, a few warm weather pictures and memories will help.

Afternoon

The important is to remember that summer will come eventually, and it will be so amazing as always. Just count down those winter days, and focus on the warmth of summer.

Christmas Comes and Goes Once Again

As a kid, I used to get more excited about Christmas. As I got older, I got less excited, mainly as I realized what an empty and kind repetive holiday it really was. Now it’s just another day, with some turkey and food at the family’s house. It’s great, but now it’s gone once again.

Sure there will be New Years, the celebration, the food, and watching the ball drop. But then the Christmas lights will go dark. The tree and all that Christmas trash will get hauled out to curb in city, or burned in the country. It will be all gone.

Christmas Tree I

The colorful lights that lit the outside of buildings will be dimmed and dismantled. The season’s joy will either go in the trash or into the attic to be hid away for another year. It will be all over but the cold of winter. We can keep the smiles on our faces for another week, but then we are facing the most brutal month of the year.

Albany doesn’t get a lot of snow. But it gets a lot of cold. January’s heating bills promise to be high. There will be ice and snow, miserable days standing out in the bus stop as we work our way into a new year. It’s going to be winter. There will be no more lights or holiday cheer. Christmas is over!

Sunshine Makes Me High

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy, sunshine in my eyes can make me cry. Sunshine on the water looks so lovely, sunshine almost always makes me high.

– John Denver, Sunshine on My Shoulders

You know, there is nothing like the first rays of sunshine in the morning. Whether it’s waking up to the sunrays breaking throug the glass of the truck cap, sitting down at a lake or on a hilltop watching the sun rise, or even just looking at the bus window at the rising the sun, it gives me an increadible high.

Sunshine

Sunshine means a new day has broken. A new chance to explore, to discover, to figure out who I am as an individual. A new chance to do good and change the world. Everything starts over again, as we go from the cycle of morning to night in the life of the day.

Night time can be dark and frightening at times. Yet, then with the rising of the sun, the light shines brightly over the world once again.

It Should Not Rain on Weekends

I am absolutely opposed to rain on the weekends. Rain can ruin weekend plans, force people to be stuck inside, when it would otherwise be much nicer to spend time outdoors exploring the great outdoors.

Now there is absolutely no way to prevent rain from occuring on weekends. It’s not like we can pass a law preventing or just tell god not to rain on our weekends. There are no giant raincoats that we place over the sky, to keep the clouds from dumping their load upon us.

It’s not to say that we don’t need rain. Rain keeps the plants and crops growing, it keep things from drying out to much and decreases the risk of wildfire. It keeps our streams and wells replenished and full. Yet, does that mean it’s okay for it to rain on weekends?

Rain Soaked Trail

Why can’t every weekend day, be beautiful, and sunny, low humidity, and 75 degrees?
