Pine Bush Night Hikes are the best! πŸŒƒ

One of my favorite times to hike in the Albany Pine Bush Preserve is after the sun has set. Lots of open canopy and enough light pollution it’s rarely dark enough to need a flashlight. Decent views of the stars at night, no roots to trip on. The sand feels nice to walk on and woods is full of sounds.

Thinking of a Dexter Lake Hike.

One of the hikes I plan to do this spring or early summer, is to hike back to Dexter Lake from Hall Road. This follows an old woods road and a snowmobile trail, and might be some fun fishing after a day hike. I could go an overnight hammock camping, once black fly season is over, probably camp one night on Piseco-Powley Road, then hike back the next day to Dexter Lake.

Full EIS are becoming rare.

One thing I learned about over the weekend talking to people at Lupine Festival, is how few major development projects in recent years have been subject to a full Environmental Impact Statement.

This is quite concerning, as environmental reviews can help mitigate potential environmental and community concerns, and it limits public participation. While EIS may require scaling down or abandoning some projects, it’s usually done for good reason. Protecting our natural resources and community character is important, keeping our children healthy, protecting our air and water is important.

Still undecided about Memorial Day Weekend. β›Ί

Still undecided about Memorial Day Weekend. β›Ί

  • I don’t have Friday off but I could still get it off.
  • Next weekend could be exceptionally nice
  • If I do take it off I would leave Friday morning before dawn to head up north and get the best possible campsite
  • But I think the following weekend might be a lot less crowded and maybe even warmer
  • There is going to be a lot of demand for primitive sites with campgrounds closed during the holiday weekend
  • I am considering Piseco Powley Road but I don’t know if the gates are open yet for the year
  • Memorial Day Weekend is always terribly buggy with black flies but the screen house should help
  • I have some projects I could work on next week at home
  • Waiting until the last weekend of May would mean it is likely to be even warmer – maybe even downright hot
  • That would mean the water temperature in the potholers would be warner too
  • Plus I may be doing a lot of trips to the potholers and other Adirondack swimming holes this summer including summer vacation if state parks pools remain close
  • It’s probably better to wait but I don’t know what the weather will be like the subsequent week
