Rattlesnake Hill WMA

The Rattlesnake Hill Wildlife Management Area is a 5,100 acre upland tract, situated approximately eight miles west of Dansville, New York. Roughly two-thirds of the area lies in southern Livingston County, while the remaining third lies in northern Allegany County. The tract was purchased in the 1930’s under the Federal Resettlement Administration and is one of several such areas turned over to DEC for development as a wildlife management area.

The area is appropriately named after the Timber Rattlesnake, which may be occasionally found in the more remote sections of the “Hill”.

The area offers an interesting blend of upland habitats such as mature woodland, overgrown fields, conifer plantations, old growth apple orchards and open meadows.

The area is inhabited by a variety of game species and is open to public hunting. The white-tailed deer, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, grey squirrel, cottontail rabbit and woodcock are found on the area. An occasional snowshoe hare may be observed adjacent to thick creek bottom brush or conifer plantation habitats.

A number of small marsh units have been developed and provide limited hunting for waterfowl. Some of the area’s furbearing species such as mink, beaver and raccoon may be occasionally viewed at these marsh units.

February 14, 2023 Evening

Good evening! Happy Valentines Day Eve. February is halfway done and tomorrow is going to be warm enough to open up the windows and let some fresh air in. That makes me happy.

Mostly clear and 43 degrees for the evening walk 🚶 here in Delmar. 🌃 Calm wind. With those clear skies cooling off quickly. But it will rebound quickly tomorrow as we have our first real spring thaw.

I was pleasantly surprised that I got released at 5 o’clock on this Valentines Day ♥ and was able to take the express bus 🚍 home. It’s nice having that option on a session day though who knows how long it will last as there isn’t a lot of riders right now heading out to Slingerlands or Voorheesville at least not on 5 pm bus which is less popular than the earlier express bus. The thing is that some of the former riders retired and more people nowadays are able to do hybrid or work from home 🏡. Our department wants that option but the people up top say no. Getting hard though to be competitive without that option.

It was annoying this morning that the ramp to 787 was closed again. 🚧 I wish they could wait until the off hours or at least until the end of rush hour. I don’t understand their decision making process on that. To boot the express bus 🚍 was 20 minutes late due to the driver making a wrong term. I ended up walking 🚶 most of the way to the Park and Ride as I wanted to get more steps in and it was a very pleasant morning.

Tonight will have increasing clouds ☁, with a low of 31 degrees at 1am. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 30th. Light and variable wind becoming south 5 to 10 mph after midnight. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 17 degrees. The record low of -22 occurred back in 1943.

Got paid today 💵 and it looks like my bills aren’t as bad as I thought they would be. I might actually have a bit extra, I might start adding more to the savings account, the first time I’ve saved money in a year but interest rates are going up and I’m concerned more about mid range expenses.

Tonight will have a Waining Crescent 🌘 Moon with 33% illuminated. The Worm 🐛 Moon is on Thursday, March 2. The darkest hour is at 12:11 am, followed by dawn at 6:26 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:55 am in the east-southeast (107°) and last for 3 minutes and 2 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 21 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 7:35 am with sun in the east-southeast (114°). Tonight will have 13 hours and 23 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 40 seconds over last night.

Been really digging into the ins and outs of machine learning. 🤖 Lately I’ve been about better ways to target 🎯 and estimate voting patterns using election results and the enrollment rolls. It would be interesting if you could target based on actual past results and demographics. I have used imputation in the past for making maps and are considering other ways I could use machine learning to better understand data. Decision trees 🎄 and random forests are particularly interesting methods.

Tomorrow will be cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing 🌃, with a high of 58 degrees at 3pm. 22 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 12th. Breezy, with a south wind 13 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 23 degrees. The record high of 55 was set in 2006. 9.0 inches of snow fell back in 1894.❄

I think tomorrow will be a good day to have the windows open 🔳 and let all that fresh air in. 🍃 While I’ll probably only open windows without storm windows it should be nice to enjoy the fresh air.

In four weeks on March 14 the sun will be setting in the west (268°) at 7:01 pm (Daylight Savings Time),🌄 which is one hour, 34 minutes and 36 seconds later then tonight. In 2021 on that day, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 41 and 19 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 44 and 25 degrees. The record high of 75 degrees was set back in 1946.

Looking ahead, Average High is 40 ☀️ is Next Tuesday, First Day of Spring 💮 is in 5 weeks, Average High is 50 🌸 is in 6 weeks, Mothers Day 👩‍ is in 3 months, Primary Day 🗳️ is in 18 weeks, Independence Day 🇺🇸 is in 20 weeks, World Population Day 👩‍👩‍👧‍👧 is in 21 weeks, National Nude Day 👱 is in 5 months, August 🌻 is in 24 weeks, Halloween 🎃 is in 37 weeks, Average High is 50 🍂 is in 9 months, Election Day 🗳️ is in 9 months, Repeal of Prohibition Day 🍺 is in 42 weeks and Boxing Day 🥊 is in 45 weeks.

I would be very annoyed if they banned Tiktok 🐮

I would be very annoyed if they banned Tiktok 🐮

I like watching Tiktok, especially AgTok and the bullhaulers and truckers doing bull hauling-trucking type stuff while stuck in traffic on the bus. While I don’t make my own TikTok videos, in part because my life is so boring, it sure is a lot of fun to watch.

Is Tiktok healthy, good way to spend time? Sure I could be watching an instructional video, learning a new skill, doing something better with my time while stuck in traffic in commute home, but sometimes after a long day of work, I need a breath of fresh air, even if it sometimes tastes a bit like diesel smoke and silage.

Tiktok is fun. I think concerns about it being used as a spy platform are overblown, as I don’t think there is much useful information to be gleamed out of such things. While I guess the platform could be grabbing geopositioning data from uploaded videos, I think people would have already figured out if the app was actually stealing data or other information from people’s phones at this point. It’s not difficult to put a network snooping app on a phone, and watch what traffic the app is generating — and I’m sure security researchers and developers have already searched out for nefariousness purposes.

February 14, 2023 Morning

Good morning! Happy Valentines Day. ♥ Finally warm and bright enough to walk at 6:15. I think it’s the first time in months. But the days are getting longer. It’s a nice dawn, with a declining half 🌗 moon above. Not sure if it will be the best sunrise ever though due to the clouds in the east.

Mostly cloudy and 37 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ Breezy, ️18 mph breeze from the northwest 🌬 with gusts up to 28 mph 💨💨💨. But it’s a fairly warm breeze by February standards. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Friday around 3 pm. ☃️

It’s nice to get out early, it tends to better equalize the time in the morning 🥚 to have breakfast and get my clothes ironed before work and shower 🚿. Having a single pool of time ⌚ just means if one step runs longer I don’t fall behind on my SC especially as the express leaves about 15 minutes before the local.

Today will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny ☁, with a high of 47 degrees at 2pm. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 20th. Northwest wind 13 to 18 mph decreasing to 7 to 12 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 28 degrees. The record high of 63 was set in 1946. 23.5 inches of snow fell back in 1914.❄

Going to be a nice day, something like the first day of calendar spring. 🌷 But then again that’s only a month away and it’s been quite mild. Too much sunlight in the morning means I have to draw the shades but later in the afternoon the sun is nice. Not sure if I’ll get out at five to take the express home but so be it.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:11 pm with sun having an altitude of 34.3° from the due south horizon (-36.5° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 8.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 4:46 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (246°). 📸

The sunset is in the west-southwest (253°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:26 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 2 seconds with dusk around 5:54 pm, which is one minute and 18 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 6:28 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 43 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 6 mph. Tomorrow will have 10 hours and 37 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 41 seconds over today..

Today is pay day which is nice 💵 as I think my credit card bill is due soon 💳 and it’s been higher with inflation and the many trips that I made this year. Probably also need to start saving for my tax bill and car insurance 🚙 which will be another chunk of change. But it looks like until Friday my heat will be off which is good.

Tonight will have increasing clouds ☁, with a low of 32 degrees at 11pm. 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 2nd. Light and variable wind becoming south 6 to 11 mph after midnight. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 17 degrees. The record low of -22 occurred back in 1943.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. 😕 Saturday, sunny, with a high near 38. Sunday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 47. Typical average high for the weekend is 37 degrees.

Fairly mild but maybe cloudy ⛅ for the second half of the weekend. I guess it would be kind of nice to get out of town this weekend. ⛺ There isn’t a lot of snow outside of the Adirondacks so trails might be muddy especially after Thursdays rain.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Average High is 40 ☀️ when the sun will be setting at 5:44 pm with dusk at 6:11 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 41 and 26 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 40 degrees. We hit a record high of 63 back in 1903.

February 13, 2023 Evening

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 45 degrees in Delmar for the evening walk. ☁️ Calm wind. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 10 pm. ☃️

Can you believe Monday is already done? ⌛ Last week seemed to also go by in a flash. It seems like life is going by so quickly these days but maybe that’s intentional on my part. I put a lot of things into auto pilot ✈ as if you make good habits happen they compound.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ☁️, with a low of 33 degrees at 5am. 16 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 5th. Breezy, with a light and variable wind becoming northwest 15 to 20 mph in the evening. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. In 2022, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 15 degrees. The record low of -13 occurred back in 2016.

It was nice taking the express bus 🚍 both ways to work today on a session dress up day. That said the morning bus was running late and then the ramp getting onto 787 was closed due to construction. But it beats taking the local. As planned I got off at the Plaza to get a few extra steps in.

Tonight will have a Last Quarter 🌗 Moon with 44% illuminated. The Worm 🐛 Moon is on Wednesday, March 1. The darkest hour is at 12:11 am, followed by dawn at 6:27 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:56 am in the east-southeast (108°) and last for 3 minutes and 2 seconds.

Sunrise is one minute and 21 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 7:36 am with sun in the east-southeast (115°). Tonight will have 13 hours and 26 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 40 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 45 degrees at 2pm. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 15th. Northwest wind 7 to 17 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 28 degrees. The record high of 63 was set in 1946. 23.5 inches of snow fell back in 1914.❄

The weather for tomorrow looks decent. ☀ Too bad I’ll be in my office all day but I enjoy the sunshine and the natural light. Days are long enough these days I don’t need my desk lamp at all on sunny days when I get out by five 5⃣ which is nice.

In four weeks on March 13 the sun will be setting in the west (267°) at 7:00 pm (Daylight Savings Time),🌄 which is one hour, 34 minutes and 43 seconds later then tonight. In 2021 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 39 and 23 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 44 and 25 degrees. The record high of 70 degrees was set back in 2012.

Looking ahead, Presidents Day 👴 is Next Monday, 8 PM Dusk 🌆 is in 8 weeks, May 🕊 is in 11 weeks, 8:30 PM Sunset ️⛱️ is in 16 weeks, Average High is 80 🏖 is in 18 weeks, World Mosquito Day 🐞 is in 27 weeks, Labor Day 👨‍🏭 is in 29 weeks, September 11th 🇺🇸 is in 30 weeks, 7 PM Sunset 🌆 is in 31 weeks, Average Night Below Freezing 🌌 is in 9 months, Cyber Monday 🛍️ is in 41 weeks, First Sunday of Advent ✝️ is in 42 weeks, Bake Cookies Day 🍪 is in 44 weeks and Christmas 🎅 is in 45 weeks.

February 13, 2023 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. But so does the express bus 🚍 which makes for an easier commute. Partly clear and 27 degrees for the morning walk. 🌅 There is a northwest breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. Things will start to thaw out at around 8 am. 🌡️.

I heard something about a football 🏈 game on the radio 📻 this morning while listening to the BBC report on climate change and the ocean 🌎 which I found more interesting. Then I got up, reheated the coffee and pancakes 🥞. Saves so much time. I have actually no idea how long the game went on, but Walmart wasn’t crowded last night at 6 PM and I was in bed by 9 PM.

Great morning for the walk. 🚶 Lots of fresh crisp air with a slight taste of barnyard 🐮 on it. No sunrise yet but it’s coming. Mostly clear skies which is nice. Shower 🚿 and catch the express at 8:15 right from by home which is great. I will probably get off at the Plaza and walk over to the SOB where I work for some extra steps though I don’t have to if it looks like there is a lot of protestors at the Plaza. 👣 Tomorrow I might do my walk at 6:15 rather than a as there is quite a bit of daylight now in the morning. Then so breakfast second.

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 48 degrees at 3pm. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 22nd. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 21 degrees. The record high of 58 was set in 1900. 9.0 inches of snow fell back in 1893.❄

I’ve decided as part of my calorie reduction program 🍏 to focus on eating a minimum of 2-3 lb of fruits and vegetables a day. I’ve noticed already that with a more stable blood sugar levels and a full stomach that does more reduce calories than anything else. You look at the calories labels and you really can’t eat enough fruits and vegetables to get fat off them. 🤰🏼 Plus eating fruits and vegetables is far more fun than saying no, no matter what the puritans tell you. I am restocking the fruit bowl 🍊 today.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:11 pm with sun having an altitude of 34° from the due south horizon (-36.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 8.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 4:45 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (246°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (253°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:25 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 3 seconds with dusk around 5:53 pm, which is one minute and 18 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 6:27 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 45 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. Tomorrow will have 10 hours and 34 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 39 seconds over today.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 33 degrees at 6am.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. 😎 Saturday, sunny, with a high near 39. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 47. Typical average high for the weekend is 37 degrees.

Now the question 🙋 for the weekend is where to go. I know many people would like me to go to hell but I already live and work there so I’m thinking more likely Schoharie or Madison County would be good. The horse 🐴 trails in Madison County would likely thought be muddy. I did really enjoy that trip.

Looking ahead, next Monday is Presidents Day 👴 when the sun will be setting at 5:34 pm with dusk at 6:01 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 28 and 13 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 37 degrees. We hit a record high of 66 back in 1930. I think Martin Van Burean is my favorite president.

 Firebreak

February 12, 2023 Evening

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 37 degrees for the evening walk in Delmar. ☁️ Maybe a few stars are about but not much. Calm wind. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 9 pm. ☃️

Hiked thirty one 3️⃣1️⃣ miles this weekend which isn’t too bad. 🚶 Drove fewer miles than I walked. I hiked to Norman’s Kills Falls, Meads Road, Van Dyke Preserve, Five Rivers, the Town Park in the morning today, then later on Bennett Hill and Blodgett Hill in the afternoon. Didn’t get into a wreck heading over to Blodgett Hill before dark but maybe almost a ticket for speeding. 🎫

I was my usual Sunday driver self 🚘, hiked Bennett Hill and in the evening Blodgett Hill. I know I should have squeezed in Copeland Hill too but I didn’t have the time. Visited with my parents 🍲 and went to the Walmart to make sure that I had enough fruits and vegetables for the week. The goal should be 2.5 – 3 lb a day or 18 lbs of fruits and veggies or so a week. 🍏

I kind of loss track of the time at my parents house 🕒 and blew past a cop 🚨 on 32 rushing over to Blodgett Hill to get up it before dark but I didn’t get stopped. I really was only going a few miles over the 55 rural speed limit – maybe 57 or 59, and it wasn’t really a speed trap as the cop was driving but I’m such a slow driver 🐢 as it saves fuel ⛽ in my big jacked up truck which is already too expensive.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 25 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 11th. Light northwest wind. In 2022, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 5 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1875.

Maybe I’ll have to turn my heat back on. ♨ I was hoping it would be closer to freezing and I could get away with having it. Truth is I don’t mind the cold, especially with my heated blanket. I’m sure when I own my own land 🚜 I’ll let the fire die down before bed. 🛏 I’m increasingly opposed to central heating, I prefer to sleep in the cold.

Tonight will have a Last Quarter 🌗 Moon with 55% illuminated. The Snow ❄ Moon is on Tuesday, February 28. The darkest hour is at 12:11 am, followed by dawn at 6:29 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:58 am in the east-southeast (108°) and last for 3 minutes and 3 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 19 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 7:38 am with sun in the east-southeast (115°). Tonight will have 13 hours and 29 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 38 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 48 degrees at 3pm. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 22nd. That’s warmer than I keep it normally in my apartment. Thermostat will be off tomorrow even if I don’t touch it. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 21 degrees. The record high of 58 was set in 1900. 9.0 inches of snow fell back in 1893.❄

Tomorrow starts the new express bus 🚍 going right past my house which is perfect for me on a session day. I plan to get an early start for my walk, 🚶 and then shower 🚿 and iron my shirt so I can out for the bus at 8:15. Plan calls for getting off at the Plaza and walking underground to work.

In four weeks on March 12 the sun will be setting in the west (266°) at 6:59 pm (Daylight Savings Time),🌄 which is one hour, 34 minutes and 50 seconds later then tonight. In 2021 on that day, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 60 and 30 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 44 and 25 degrees. The record high of 69 degrees was set back in 2012.

Looking ahead, Daylight Savings Time 🌆 is a month away, Last Day of Winter 🏂 is in 5 weeks, 7:30 PM Sunset 🌇 is in 8 weeks, Average High is 60 🌷 is in 9 weeks, 8 PM Sunset 🌇 is in 12 weeks, Mothers Day 👩‍ is in 13 weeks, Fathers Day 👨 is in 17 weeks, Last Sunset After 8:30 PM 🌆 is in 22 weeks, Last Sunset After 8 PM 🌆 is in 6 months, 6:30 Sunrise 🌇 is in 30 weeks, Constitution Day 📜 is in 31 weeks, October 🎃 is in 33 weeks, Average High is 65 🍂 is in 34 weeks, Columbus Day 🛥️ is in 8 months, 7:15 AM Sunrise ⌛️ is in 43 weeks and Christmas Eve 🎅 is in 45 weeks.

February 12, 2023 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Partly sunny and 40 degrees at the Bennett Hill Preserve. There is a east-southeast breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 10 pm. ☃️

It’s the Sunday morning hike on Bennett Hill 🗻 same one I do every week before going out see the folks. Nice day though it started out cold. But it is now starting to feel like a mid March day. Sun angle has been getting a lot stronger the past few days so when it’s sunny out and not too windy it warms up fast.

This afternoon will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 45 degrees at 3pm. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 15th. East wind 3 to 5 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 16 degrees. The record high of 55 was set in 1932. 13.5 inches of snow fell back in 1988.❄

Split pea soup 🥙 for lunch at my folks house and then I’ll probably sit out back with the dog 🐶. If I leave early enough I might do a jot up Blodgett Hill. Then I need to get some groceries 🍌, mostly the perishable healthy kind. If not for needing oranges and bananas for work I probably could skip that trip. But I’m eating healthier in my 40s.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:11 pm with sun having an altitude of 33.7° from the due south horizon (-37.2° vs. 6/21). At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies 🌃 and temperatures around 42 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 10 hours and 29 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 37 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 27 degrees at 6am. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 18th. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1875.

One month 📅 from now will be Daylight Savings Time 🌆 when the sun will be setting at 6:59 pm with dusk at 7:26 pm (Daylight Savings Time). The average high temperature is 34 degrees, with a record high of 61 in 1895.
