The Rattlesnake Hill Wildlife Management Area is a 5,100 acre upland tract, situated approximately eight miles west of Dansville, New York. Roughly two-thirds of the area lies in southern Livingston County, while the remaining third lies in northern Allegany County. The tract was purchased in the 1930’s under the Federal Resettlement Administration and is one of several such areas turned over to DEC for development as a wildlife management area.
The area is appropriately named after the Timber Rattlesnake, which may be occasionally found in the more remote sections of the “Hill”.
The area offers an interesting blend of upland habitats such as mature woodland, overgrown fields, conifer plantations, old growth apple orchards and open meadows.
The area is inhabited by a variety of game species and is open to public hunting. The white-tailed deer, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, grey squirrel, cottontail rabbit and woodcock are found on the area. An occasional snowshoe hare may be observed adjacent to thick creek bottom brush or conifer plantation habitats.
A number of small marsh units have been developed and provide limited hunting for waterfowl. Some of the area’s furbearing species such as mink, beaver and raccoon may be occasionally viewed at these marsh units.
Good evening! Partly clear ๐ and 40 degrees for the evening walk ๐ถ here in Delmar. There is a northwest breeze at 7 mph. ๐. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 11 pm. โ๏ธ
Memories of Madison County โบ and wishing I was still there, but alas I’m back home. If you believed last week’s forecast for tonight, heck even the forecast of this morning it would be rainy and cold tonight and tomorrow and I would have driven home in the rain even today, taking camp down in the rain. But none of that proved to be true.
It was a nice weekend ๐ฒ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฒ hiked 30 miles in the state forest over three days though it was a fraction of the 130 mile trail system but between the two weekends spent there I feel like I’ve seen a lot of state forest. I’ll have to make a map ๐บ of all the trails I explored.
Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ฅ, with a low of 27 degrees at 2am. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 18th. North wind 3 to 7 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 13 degrees. The record low of -10 occurred back in 2015. Not this year though a few weeks back we had that negative 13 day.
Went out and saw the folks ๐ช and then washed all the traction sand mud off my truck got fruits and vegetables and a few other supplies including a cast iron frying pan ๐ณ, razors and also lighter fluid for the next time I camp in case the wood is wet. After a fun weekend back to eating healthy again though even on my fun weekend I included extra fruits and vegetables.
Tonight will have a New ๐ Moon with 1% illuminated. The Worm ๐ Moon is on Tuesday, March 7. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 28th. Light and variable wind becoming south 8 to 13 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 30 degrees. The record high of 73 was set in 2018. 11.0 inches of snow fell back in 1929.โ
Back to work tomorrow ๐ข after the long weekend. There is a lot going on in the office this week despite not being a session week so it’s best to be back in the office as remote work is but a memory. Would be tough to work remote with the clouds and rain and the limited solar power for the truck at any rate. Better to save vacation time for the summer โ and nicer weather.
In four weeks on March 20 the sun will be setting in the west (271ยฐ) at 7:08 pm (Daylight Savings Time),๐ which is one hour, 33 minutes and 53 seconds later then tonight. The past few days I’ve decided to take a break from social media and the blog ๐ so I can spend more time in the woods hiking and thinking, ๐ listening to podcasts and drinking ๐ป beer and being away from it all. Two nights is never enough, especially since I got used to remote work from camp. I could have taken tomorrow off but rain is coming.
I was on the fence about where to this long weekend โบ but settled on Brookfield as there was more trails I wanted to explore and the forecast while cloudy for Sunday and today looked less wet. I had been at Rennselearville State Forest three weekends ago and wanted to mix things up especially so I didn’t burn up too much firewood. Plus I like the rural landscape ๐ heading out to Brookfield. Longer drive though but a pleasant one.
Saturday I walked around Glimmerglass State Park ๐ and it was cold by the lake but in the woods with the wind ๐ blocked by the mountains it wasn’t so bad. I didn’t stick around very long as such. Deep blue skies and a pretty sunset ๐. Got to Moscow Hill Horse Camp ๐ด and set up camp then hiked over to Elmer’s Place and then bushwhacked over Grassy Hill trying to find a good view which didn’t exist but I did flush out a ton of grouse. ๐
By the time I got back to camp it was 6:10 and nearly pitch black but I had previously gathered firewood, set up the lights and propane, ๐ฎ had everything ready to go so it was a pleasant night. Had a big fire ๐ฅ though it was smokey at times due to all the wet wood, wet stuff in the burnables as I’ve been eating healthier. Heard a local fire station whistle go of ๐๐งโ๐ and thought I might have some unplanned visitors but no it was some other call. This place isn’t as remote as some places I camp. โบ Forgot to buy lighter fluid but once I got the somewhat damp and frozen wood going it burned well but was sparky until the wind died out. Saturday was a star filled night โจ and very mild which was nice.
Sunday was cloudy and breezy at times ๐ฌ๏ธ especially up on the hills. I hiked the bulk of the day, visiting most of the outer truck trails at Charles Baker State Forest ๐ฒ๐ณ๐ฒ as I didn’t want to hike muddy horse trails. Checked out the Elmer Spring Campsite which is remote but accessible by vehicle and is really nice and private. โบ Hiked the Ledges Trail which was kind of interesting as was Truck Trail 7 which is cut into a ledge on the side of the mountain โฐ๏ธ. Icy in spots especially on the road but cold enough even the horse ๐ด trails weren’t too icy.
For today, Washington’s Birthday will have showers likely, mainly before 11am. Cloudy ๐ฆ, with a high of 40 degrees at 11am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 28th. Not bad for the high country in in. Just wearing the vest. Southwest wind 9 to 13 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 28 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1930. 11.2 inches of snow fell back in 1977.โ
While it hasn’t been sunny โ๏ธ the mid weather has been nice. Not having to deal with frozen water ๐ฆ, frozen food like milk ๐ฅ or eggs ๐ฅ is good for a change. The batteries are healthy and happy ๐ in my truck ๐, I haven’t had to start the truck all weekend long. Used the propane heater โจ a lot less than I have in recent trips, no icy propane lines to deal with. But it’s been cold enough that things have remained generally frozen in the ground, keeping the trails from being too muddy.
Solar noon ๐ is at 12:16 pm with sun having an altitude of 36.2ยฐ from the due south horizon (-34.4ยฐ vs. 6/21). Today I decided to hike back and explore a few more ponds ๐ธ in the northern part of the state forest. Then midday head back home. I figure enjoy and explore as much of the land while I’m here. Then I’ll have to head home. I thought about taking Tuesday off but it looks like rain โ and maybe snow here.

Planning to go out and see the folks ๐ช when I get home, that is after showering ๐ฟ and unpacking. Then I want to run to the car wash ๐ and then Walmart for fruit and vegetables for the upcoming week. ๐
Brookfieldlooks cold and snowy for next weekend. ๐จ But I got my fun in. Saturday, a chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 25. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Sunday, a chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 34. Breezy. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Typical average high for the weekend is 39 degrees.
I don’t necessarily plan on being back to Brookfield anytime soon though I might do my April trip to Cazenovia rather than the Adirondacks East Branch Sacandaga River for a change. ๐ป Easter is late this year and depending on how mild the spring is things could be greening up by then. Probably few black flies up north ๐ but I’ve been itching to do the Gorge Rail Trail is Cazenovia – Canestota for some time again. March maybe a camping trip โบ to Rennselearville State Forest again or Burnt Rossman. Depends on how much snow. It will be after the time change at this point.
Looking ahead, there are 7 weeks until 8 PM Dusk ๐ when the sun will be setting at 7:39 pm with dusk at 8:06 pm (Daylight Savings Time) in Brookfield. Earlier back in Albany. We hit a record high of 86 back in 1922.
Good morning! Happy Friday. Cloudy, dark and 51 degrees for the morning walk ๐ถ in the land of the Delmaratian. Maybe the reason it’s so dark is that it’s still 6:15 and February but I’m moving. There is a south breeze at 14 mph. ๐. The dew point is 49 degrees. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 5 pm. โ๏ธ
Grabbed my hoodie and headed out and then took it off. ๐ฐ Only a few more hours of the warmth though before the mercury starts dropping. That said, it wont get that cold tonight as it’s still February but I don’t be leaving my windows open while at work today. But April is like 45 days off a fact I’m sure my friends in the government budget office are well aware of.
Today will rain before 4pm, then a chance of rain and snow. ๐จ๏ธ Temperature rising to near 54 by 10am, then falling to around 33 during the remainder of the day. No rain yet โ but I’d say there is a decent chance I’ll taking the bus from the stop closest to where I live at 8 though who knows. Often they are overly pessimistic when it comes to rain. There are a ton of dog ๐ถ walkers out bright and early today. Probably because it’s so mild.

Did some cleaning this evening ๐งนaround the apartment after making macaroni and cheese ๐ง with a ton of veggies and real cheese, eat only one bowl and froze the rest for future meals. Getting milk ๐ฅ for the first time in over a week, a big drop from drinking two gallons a week. I also am skipping apple juice, the bottle I have left I bought in January. I decided that I can do my state taxes on paper ๐ to avoid paying to file. There is a few different open source things to compute my federal taxes, and then once they are done the state is easy to do. I like paper in the sense it’s easier to carefully review. I feel like the online services you spit too much of your information into a black box ๐ and it spits it back out and you don’t really know if it’s done right. I can compare to last year – forms are the same but the numbers ๐ข now are just slightly higher or maybe not if I reduced things down enough by retirement plan deductions.

Mostly cloudy with a few rain showers and 37 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ There is a south-southeast breeze at 10 mph. ๐ with gusts up to 21 mph ๐จ๐จ๐จ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Friday around 5 pm. โ๏ธ
I keep pushing my morning walk ๐ถ earlier and it’s pitch black out being cloudy out and starting my walk at 6:15, which is about 10 minutes before dawn. But we are adding daylight quickly to the days. I prefer walking before breakfast.
Today will be cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny โ ๐ โ , with a high of 58 degrees at 4pm. 22 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 12th. Breezy, with a south wind 10 to 15 mph increasing to 16 to 21 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph. I’m going to have to open a few windows before work to let some fresh air in. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning, which became mist by afternoon. The high last year was 23 degrees. The record high of 55 was set in 2006. 9.0 inches of snow fell back in 1894.โ
Too bad I’ll be in the office downtown ๐ข all day but the sun will be nice. I want to try and get to the farmers market and get mushrooms ๐ and a few more things. Now if we could only have such nice weather for the weekend. At least looks like it would be mild.
Solar noon ๐ is at 12:10 pm with sun having an altitude of 34.7ยฐ from the due south horizon (-36.2ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 8.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐ starts at 4:48 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (247ยฐ). ๐ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (254ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:27 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 2 seconds with dusk around 5:55 pm, which is one minute and 17 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:29 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ and temperatures around 55 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 13 mph. Tomorrow will have 10 hours and 40 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 42 seconds over today.
Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ , with a low of 41 degrees at 5am. 23 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 25th. South wind 5 to 11 mph becoming northeast after midnight. In 2022, we had light snow in the evening, which became mist by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 21 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1943.
A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐ Saturday, sunny, with a high near 40. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 48. NOAA is optimistic than other predictions. ๐ฎ Typical average high for the weekend is 37 degrees. Lately I’ve been thinking about heading to the Adirondacks but it depends on how much snow is up north.
Looking ahead, there are 2 weeks until March ๐จ when the sun will be setting at 5:45 pm with dusk at 6:12 pm. I wouldn’t be shocked ๐ฒ if we are due for one more big snow storm this winter. โ On that day in 2022, we had mostly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 41 and 17 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 40 degrees. But at least the snow won’t last. We hit a record high of 66 back in 2017.
