When I toured that off-grid house in college, they had a microhydro system that was pretty neat. Microhydro is fantastic if you have water on your land, because water power is constant and is very energy dense. Even a fairly small stream with a decent head can produce quite a bit of energy.
One advantage to Monday having been already Memorial Day is it makes the week go by quicker. Would seem even shorter if I was heading out of town for the weekend, but alas Saturday looks fairly wet.
Both my truck and bike are fairly clean, after going to the car wash last night. It was nice down by the river last night, I am really excited to check out that new kayak launch – I guess it was installed a few years back – one of these nights when the currents aren’t expected to be so stiff. Wish itwasn’t so buggy though. Picked up some groceries, then realized I forgot some. Electric toothbrush stopped working two weeks ago, but I like the job it does, so I got myself another one as I do’t want to wreck my teeth.
Since late winter, I had a small hole in my bathroom ceiling that was pecked through the tiles by the house sparrow. I had taped it over but then they poked another hole. So I wanted a more permanent fix and got some spackle to fix the hole. Also patched the mouse hole that previously I had patched but was knocked out again. I probably could call the landlord for fixes, but I’d rather not bother him for something I can tape over for $2 container of Spackle.
After pressure washing my bike good last night, I knew I was good for oiling the chain and other parts. I went to pull out the chain lubricant, and realized not much was left in the container. I put some spray lubricant on the chain for now besides the remaining chain lubricant I had. I guess I could drive or ride over to Walmart but I think this will work for now.
Eggs for breakfast today, decided to listen to the Grateful Dead this morning on the commute. I am a bit tired of E-Books, listened to a lot during the Memorial Day Weekend. Nice spring day for the ride in, although I was running late and had to go relatively quickly.
The old man in the park is going from trash can to trash can, pulling out cans for their deposit. Making a few bucks and keeping some aluminum and plastic out of the landfill.
I’ve really gotten into watching this channel on Facebook about dumpster diving. There are so many good free things you can find in dumpsters and divert from landfills. The amount of various products discarded by businesses is shocking and there are free resources – considered by many to be waste.
If I only had land where I could store and sort materials – and use them there is so much I could do. Collecting various scrap metals for sale at scrap yards. Deposit cans and bottles. Discarded food waste from grocery stores and restaurants for feeding hogs and chickens. Shredded paper for livestock bedding. Pallets for livestock housing, fencing and bonfires. Amazing how a little bit of pallet wood can make other trash burn hot!
So many resources are out there if you are willing to dig through what others call garbage!
Okay, I don’t drink gas like Big Red does. But I should drink more water and less coffee. That’s what my doctor says, I’d be so much happier and sane if I did that. And manage my blood sugar better by eating regular meals.
Paranoia is real, especially after a long rainy weekend in the wilderness smoking dope. My lifted truck is getting old and it handles like one and has been making a lot of unpleasant noises for over a decade. I should have down shifted and been easier on the brakes but they’re fine after a few good hard stops to wear off the glaze on the pads.
It was so nice riding to work today, it just really clears my mind. That said, when the time comes I’m ready for a new smaller and efficient vehicle especially if I want to drive across the country like I’m considering doing next year. I’d love to see places like Missouri and Wisconsin, maybe Idaho and Alaska.
Out walking at the Henry Hudson Park and soon I’ll head to the car wash to pressure wash the mud off my truck and get a few supplies at Walmart. I would sit here until dusk but the mosquitoes are eating me alive! But it was a good day. Next weekend though looks like crap.
