The Rattlesnake Hill Wildlife Management Area is a 5,100 acre upland tract, situated approximately eight miles west of Dansville, New York. Roughly two-thirds of the area lies in southern Livingston County, while the remaining third lies in northern Allegany County. The tract was purchased in the 1930’s under the Federal Resettlement Administration and is one of several such areas turned over to DEC for development as a wildlife management area.
The area is appropriately named after the Timber Rattlesnake, which may be occasionally found in the more remote sections of the “Hill”.
The area offers an interesting blend of upland habitats such as mature woodland, overgrown fields, conifer plantations, old growth apple orchards and open meadows.
The area is inhabited by a variety of game species and is open to public hunting. The white-tailed deer, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, grey squirrel, cottontail rabbit and woodcock are found on the area. An occasional snowshoe hare may be observed adjacent to thick creek bottom brush or conifer plantation habitats.
A number of small marsh units have been developed and provide limited hunting for waterfowl. Some of the area’s furbearing species such as mink, beaver and raccoon may be occasionally viewed at these marsh units.
After studying the methods quite a bit, I’ve determined there is no real easy way to find peaks on mountains and report their exact elevation in QGIS. The best method I could come up with was to figure out the median point in the elevation for the map, then use that to isolate “mountains” and from there polygonize, create zonal statistics for each polygon, crop the DEM layer to each polygon then select the pixel that matched the peak. This can be done, but I couldn’t figure out how to automate it easily using the Graphical Modeler, so I would have to write a full plugin to do it. I decided it wasn’t worth the effort. In most cases, I didn’t care about the exact peak, and it would just be easier to add peaks to my maps on a case-by-case basis using a point layer with labels queried against the DEM layer.
Even this morning is remarkably nice as I fuel up on carrot pancakes and frozen cherries. Enjoy it now, the nice weather ain’t expected to last.
Good morning! Sunny and 59 degrees in Delmar. ๐ Calm wind. Nice day for riding in.
Today will be sunny ๐, with a high of 78. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 1st. Calm wind becoming northwest 5 to 8 mph in the morning. Looking ahead, there are 6 weeks until Primary Day ๐ณ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm with dusk at 9:11 pm. On that day in 2023, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 67 and 52 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 80 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 2018.
Right now when you look at the Real Clear Politics averages both natonally and for swing-states, it’s pretty clear that if the election was held today, Donald Trump would be our next President.
That said, Election Day is still six months off and a lot can change between now and then. But Biden has a long road ahead of him, and it’s going to be a steep one. While he’s still competitive and a lot can change over the next six months, the danger he faces is he’s the current incumbent and he’s the one who inevitably is where the buck stops — even if he’s not fully to blame for inflation, crime, or the many woes of our country today.
Back to work today, hopefully with all the repairs and parts put into my bike it should be good for a while now. Probably not but usually mechanical problems all happen at once.
Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Cloudy and 52 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ๏ธ Calm wind. Not as cold today but also not a beautiful day. Probably tomorrow will be the best day of the week but that’s not saying much.
Johnny cakes with onion, spinach, brocoli and corn this morning. ๐ฅ Used some cumin as a spice this morning which gave it a real earthy flavor. Topped with some cottage cheese and drank way too much coffee โ as is common these days.
Bike should be ready to be back on the road today, ๐ฒ with a new tire and tube on the front and 8 oz of tire sealant between the two wheels. I bought two tires but installed only one as I found the front new tire to be a bitch to install without the bead fully formed into position due to being a new tire. I figured the rear tire – – which I rotated to the back two weeks ago has a fair amount of tread life on it, on and the rear wears faster at any rate but in many ways is less important for control while riding trail then the front one. ๐ต And the thing of it is realistically I don’t do that many miles riding trail, it’s mostly commuting and gravel like truck trails and dirt roads.
I actually ordered a speedometer / odometer ๐ฆ – – just a real basic model to better track my milage on the bike. I was using a phone app but it’s a pain to have to reset it all the time and sometimes the GPS track is lost when I open the photo app. ๐พ It would be good to have better milage tracking for maintence needs, like changing out the chain before it gets to be complete slop and wear out the gears or to rotate the tires. Plus I have a rough idea of how many miles I’m riding – – it’s 8 3/4 mile the most direct way to work but that ignores detours and other side trips, and I’m curious to get an exact milage count. Also would be interesting on road trips and the alike.
Today will have isolated showers between 9am and 1pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ฆ, with a high of 72 degrees at 7am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 17th. Southeast wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1930. There was a dusting of snow in 1994.โ
Made a big pot of rice and beans up for the week.๐ฒ Should make some good meals for the upcoming week. I’m hoping if it’s nice enough that later on I can go out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center and read for an hour or so ๐ before it gets too dark out. Those e-books are great for that, plus having the bike makes a quick trip out to Five Rivers.
Solar noon ๐ is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 64.1ยฐ from the due south horizon (-6.7ยฐ vs. 6/21). Last night I had a big fight with my mama, ๐ช she was being a big jerk and teasing me. I am really not going to put up with her abuse – – I don’t feel like it’s required for me to visit her every week plus I wasn’t planning on going over this weekend at any rate. Next weekend might be Schohiare. Plus it’s not like the food I have there is ever healthy, and their laundry machine never works right. I’d be better off saving my weekends for fun, and going to the laundromat and avoiding the stress of visiting. ๐
Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐ Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 60. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 65. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of at 7am. Typical average high for the weekend is 70 degrees.
I would like to get out of town this weekend, โบ but as of right now I’m not hopeful, though things could change. I guess it’s good I’m saving money with rent going up in a few weeks, and everything so expensive lately. There are still a few more weeks left in May, and maybe the following weekend I could do a long a weekend to do the Catskill Scenic Trail on my bike and find ramps to enjoy into the woods.
Looking ahead, there are 7 weeks until Latest Sunset ๐ when the sun will be setting at 8:38 pm with dusk at 9:12 pm. On that day in 2023, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 86 and 61 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1943.
Why are the weekends such complete shit lately I have to ask myself? It’s kind of lame. Yesterday wasn’t bad and Friday was pretty nice, but if I had gone out of town this weekend, itwould have been a pretty wet morning taking down gear and driving home in the rain.
Good morning! Rain and 54 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ง๏ธ 15 mph southernly breeze. Not only is it wet, the wind is now whipping around. As they say, the sun ain’t going to shine anymore, at least not for two days straight on weekend.
This morning was eggs and hashbrowns ๐ณ with lots of onions, garlic, and broccoli. Not a half bad breakfast. Last night was red lentil soup with loads of shredded carrot and spices, and a little bit of cornmeal just for that rich taste of cornmeal. Amazing how quickly a big pot of that can disappear. ๐ฒ Super tasty. Pantry is getting bare but I’ll go shopping soon after I shower. :๐ฟ
Today will have showers before noon, then rain after noon. ๐ฆ High of 55 degrees at 9am. 14 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 5th. Maximum dew point of at 9am. ๐๏ธ South wind around 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 64 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1944. There was a dusting of snow in 1900.โ
I honestly didn’t have high hopes for today, and the weather didn’t disappoint. ๐ I am putting off shopping for a bit ๐ as I want to visit Steiner’s and get bike tires this morning and a spare tube, ๐ฒ so I can be back on road by Monday hopefully and be good if the weather isn’t as shitty as predicted for next weekend to ride the Catskill Scenic Trail without fear of getting a flat. I could probably get away with replacing just one tire but I think I’ll spring for two so they’re matching tires, plus even the one that isn’t totally shot is pretty worn. โซ
Solar noon ๐ is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 63.8ยฐ from the due south horizon (-7ยฐ vs. 6/21). Going out to see the folks this afternoon, ๐ช but probably won’t stay that late as I want to get the new tires mounted on the bike and the tube re-installed – – and the old tube patched if possible. Hopefully with the new tires I won’t have so many problems, but it’s been bad with the amount of broken glass there has been on the roads lately. Apparently spring comes, and everybody is tossing their beer bottles ๐พ out their car windows.
Tonight will have showers, mainly before midnight. ๐ง Low of 41 degrees at 9am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 20th. South wind 7 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. In 2023, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 49 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1969.
I’ve just been doing a lot of reading ๐ and learning lately. A lot of it is as a distraction to pass time, but it’s also been as I’ve been trying to learn as much as possible about land and building a cabin. ๐ It was remarkably quiet ๐คซ around here, no construction ๐ง on the unit next door yesterday at least while I was home – – I was at Five Rivers ๐ฆ from 8 AM through 4 PM – – and no sports games ๐ being played at the school ๐ธ next door. I was surprised how truly quiet it was yesterday around here. Even the evening was nice, took a nap ๐ and enjoyed that red Lentil soup.
Still a bit bummed out about that cabin I saw go on sale on May 1st, it would have been perfect if not for the access issues. I’m not saying something like that wouldn’t need improvement, but it would have been a great start, but I would want the parcel connected to a public roadway, ๐ก so I wouldn’t have to ever worry about access or improving the road.
Looking ahead, next Sunday is Mothers Day ๐ฉโ when the sun will be setting at 8:09 pm with dusk at 8:40 pm. On that day in 2023, we had a pretty hot day for May, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 87 and 44 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 70 degrees. I bet the black flies liked that. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1881.
I am still hoping to take off next Friday and spend a long weekend in the woods, ๐ฒbut the forecast can’t be as shitty as it currently looks for next weekend. I guess there is still five days for it to change but so far I’m not impressed.
I mean the bike shop wasn’t wrong when they said the worn out tires would be prone to flats and would ride like a pig, especially with the more worn one on the front tire. Another flat up front and I’m not riding anywhere until I get a new tire and maybe a tube in case I can’t patch it.
Good morning! Today 8:30 PM Dusk ๐ . Most cloudy and 70 degrees here in Delmar, NY. ๐ฅ๏ธ Calm wind. Hey at least it’s not raining this morning but the temperature will drop through the day and only get cloudier.
Today will be be mostly clouds with some breaks of sun especially in the morning , ๐ฅ with a high of 70 degrees at 6am. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 10th. There was a dusting of snow in 1986.โ
Another shitty kind of weekend ahead, ๐ฉ but at least this morning Mr. Preskta isn’t out working on the unit next door ๐ช shortly after getting done with the milking and feeding – – cow ๐ฎ chores at 6:30 AM in the morning. Enjoying the quiet for now, and will probably just end up spending my day at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center, ๐ธ reading in the woods. The original plan called for riding over to Pebbles Island and go for a walk there, ๐ถ but honestly the weather isn’t that impressive today. Plus I need to get a tire and maybe a tube – – at least as a back up should the patch fail.
Truth is after that crash I got into Thursday, ๐ฅ my knee still needs time to heal. ๐ฉน A weekend off from riding is a good thing in my perspective. I will continue to research tires today ๐and stop by the bike store tomorrow and buy two tires โซ and maybe also a bike tube in case my patch fails or for an emergency it wouldn’t be bad to keep in storage for while camping or riding should I get another flat. I should be back on the road by Monday assuming they have the tire in stock.

After such a busy week riding back and forth to work, ๐ถ I am okay with taking life slow and going for a walk today. And not doing much but a lot of reading and observing nature. I was at Five Rivers last night too, rode out there, hiked and red until dusk ๐ and it was a good evening. I’m just not feeling really ambitious today and I don’t feel like driving anywhere. ๐ I ended up riding back through the suburban subdivision last night, getting home in the pitch black around 10 of nine. I thought about riding out to Feura Bush for some ice cream ๐ฆ but I think I’ll wait for warmer weather then last night – – wasn’t a super warm day.
Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly after 3am. Mostly cloudy ๐ง, with a low of 48 degrees at 6am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 14th. South wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2023, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 40 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1974.
That great cabin / acerage I was looking at in Rensselaer County was only accessible via Easement, so after talking to the real estate agent I decided to pass on further investigation. ๐ก Great location, not a bad commute, and really what I wanted – – off-grid pole-and-beam cabin with water and septic on 6 acres but the Easement road was a deal breaker. The price wasn’t cheap but including the cabin it was reasonable for the location if only it didn’t involve the Easement road. Might be a good hunting cabin, but it would not be possible to improve the road and even a written easement gets complicated. Maybe I’m hoping too much that I can fine the perfect turnkey solution, but what I need to do build my own. ๐ทI’m continuing to research and learn everything I can.
I am still hoping that next weekend I can get out to Schoharie County, โบ take Friday off camp and ride throughout the weekend. Right now the weekend looks cold and showery ๐ง๏ธ but things could certainly change into he mean-time. I would like to ride the Catskill Scenic Trail, but I need new tires in the before I can do that as I don’t want to deal with another flat. And maybe find some good ramps to eat in the woods. ๐ง It’s spring turkey, ๐ฆ so probably not hiking before noontime.
Possibly the following weekend, I might do a family trip ๐ out to the Roger’s Center in Central New York, and then I believe the week after that is Memorial Day Weekend ๐บ๐ธ which I’ll have to decide where and if I want to get eaten alive by the black flies. ๐ Last year the trip out to Cole Hill for two nights was a lot of fun hammock camping, so that’s another option. There is something simple and beautiful about laying back in the hammock as the sky gets dark and cooking over the fire. ๐ฅ At some point I want to get down to Catskill Mountain Cabins, the big show room in Kingston near the Thruway to look at the pre-fab cabins that have at the showroom there, but I think that’s more likely to be a June thing. Plus thoughts of the Potholers are on my mind ๐โโ๏ธ come later in June but that gets hard to do in the sense that as summer progresses I’ll be busier with work at the campaign committee preparing for the autumn campaign season, running data exports and processing data.
Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until 9 PM Dusk ๐ when the sun will be setting at 8:28 pm. On that day in 2023, we had rain and temperatures between 69 and 60 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 76 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 1918.
Friday already. Another work week is coming to a close. But it’s been a busy one with meetings downtown, picking up my bike from the shop, lots of reading and work. Not to mention installing Fedora 40 on my laptop,
Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Mostly cloudy and 56 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ Calm wind. Not too bad out, but then again, it’s May.
Started out the morning around 5 am with some delicious Johnny cakes ๐ฅ with cottage cheese, lots of onions, peppers, Tumeric and spinach. Kind of a healthy treat of sorts – – that said I do like that carb-rich cornmeal too much but today I accidentally left out the egg but it came out fine, probably because I’ve been adding wallpaper paste to the cornmeal lately to keep things from being too runny, as often happens when much of the mix is fresh veggies like onions and peppers which are largely water. ๐ฆ
Today will be partly sunny ๐, with a high of 70 degrees at 6am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 10th. The record high of 89 was set in 2001. There was a dusting of snow in 1986.โ
Yesterday riding to work I got into a minor fender bender ๐ฒ when I crashed into a stone retaining wall, as I approached a pedestrian as I was focused on traffic and the podcast I was listening to, on a sharp bend on the bike trail at the Corning Preserve. Took a bit of paint off my bike, skinned up my leg and it was a bloody mess, ๐ฉน and ripped my jeans, ๐ but I could have been hurt worse. My knee was sore all of yesterday, but I concede it probably was my fault as I was riding too fast and the bald tire on the front wheel really reduces my traction. I really should get new tires for my bike sooner then later – – not just due to the risk of crash but also puncture.

Saw this great off-grid hunting camp property ๐, that I was thinking I could turn into an off-grid homestead but I have some questions about the property access that I emailed the seller about. Then I also need to confirm it’s properly permitted and would allow year-round residential. Perfect size cabin, beautiful but very basic inside, would need solar and road improvements but I’m waiting to find out more before scheduling a property tour. It has septic and water on site, which is great though and is like 600 sq feet. ๐ฝ Not so far from Albany too, but I’m sure there are dealer breaker with access or permitted as it’s probably too good to be true.
Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ฅ, with a low of 50 degrees at 6am. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 20th. Southeast wind 7 to 9 mph. In 2023, we had partly cloudy skies. It got down to 45 degrees. The record low of 28 occurred back in 1985.
Last night I attended a happy hour after work ๐ป with colleagues and it was a fun evening though I was a bit tipsy on the ride home, ๐ but this time I didn’t crash ๐ฅand the alcohol probably helped with me sore knee. ๐ฆถ But after all that and because it was fairly late and I was dog tired ๐ถ I decided just to go down to the Elm Ave Park for a while before coming home and laying back in bed doing a bit more reading of e-books on my phone. Lately I’ve had a lot of interest in technical books ๐ like the one I’m reading on Linux system administration as it gets me away from the rest of the world. I also have several books on cabin construction ๐ก and rural living that I’ve been studying but not last night. Plus then I wasted more time on Facebook AI Image Generator which I think is so much fun for generating images of Garfield and Snoopy in places you never would think to see them. It’s all fun and games until the copyright lawyers get such programs banished from the internet.
Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers after 3pm. Partly sunny ๐, with a high of 68 degrees at 6am. Typical for Tomorrow. South wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. I don’t have ambitious plans for the weekend, ๐ฒ but I have library books to return ๐, yes besides the e-books I’ve been reading I got some physical books out of the library too though I discovered most of them are either on Hoopla or Libby so I don’t know how necessary that will be in the future but with Libby only working for two days off the cell network, I might have to take that in consideration when doing extended trips to the Adirondacks this summer, though I have my doubts with work that I’ll have a chance to get away for any extended period of time.
Looking ahead to Sunday, showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 56. ๐ง๏ธ Southeast wind 11 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Typical average high for the weekend is 68 degrees.
Sunday is the shopping day ๐ and more then likely I’ll be stocking up and going out to the parents house ๐ช for Sunday dinner. Next week is Mother’s Day but the family is out of town so I won’t be going but my hope is to also be out of town, namely riding the Catskill Scenic Trail.
As black flies every where are noting, next Friday is Average High is 70 ๐ฎ when the sun will be setting at 8:07 pm with dusk at 8:37 pm. On that day in 2023, we had sunny and temperatures between 77 and 39 degrees. Already we’ve had some way of a preview of that nice summer weather, and it’s only going to get better. We hit a record high of 92 back in 1970.
