John Boyd Thacher State Park

John Boyd Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.

Rip Van Winkle Votes

“The appearance of Rip, with his long, grizzled beard, his rusty fowling-piece, his uncouth dress, and the army of women and children at his heels, soon attracted the attention of the tavern politicians. They crowded round him, eying him from head to foot, with great curiosity. The orator bustled up to him, and, drawing him partly aside, inquired, “on which side he voted?” Rip stared in vacant stupidity. Another short but busy little fellow pulled him by the arm, and rising on tiptoe, inquired in his ear, “whether he was Federal or Democrat.” Rip was equally at a loss to comprehend the question; when a knowing, self-important old gentleman, in a sharp cocked hat, made his way through the crowd, putting them to the right and left with his elbows as he passed, and planting himself before Van Winkle, with one arm akimbo, the other resting on his cane, his keen eyes and sharp hat penetrating, as it were, into his very soul, demanded in an austere tone, “What brought him to the election with a gun on his shoulder, and a mob at his heels; and whether he meant to breed a riot in the village?”

“Alas! gentlemen,” cried Rip, somewhat dismayed, “I am a poor, quiet man, a native of the place, and a loyal subject of the King, God bless him!”

“Here a general shout burst from the bystanders-“a tory! a tory! a spy! a refugee! hustle him! away with him!” It was with great difficulty that the self-important man in the cocked hat restored order; and having assumed a tenfold austerity of brow, demanded again of the unknown culprit, what he came there for, and whom he was seeking. The poor man humbly assured him that he meant no harm, but merely came there in search of some of his neighbors, who used to keep about the tavern. ”

Nothing Wrong With Saying Good Things About the President.

The conventional wisdom of the day says, never say anything good about President Donald Trump. He’s a man from the other political party, he must be wrong at all time. But I disagree. I think when he does good things, you should say good things about the President. Maybe he’s not perfect, and maybe there are better alternatives for 2020, but when he does good I think you should be positive towards him to the extent he’s doing good.

Thinking of Nicer Weather

I am looking forward to winter finally coming out to it’s logical conclusion, and nights back out in the wilderness. Every day, the snow melts a little bit more, and while many of the mud-season roads may remain closed for another month and a half, I am hoping to be back in the wilderness for a night or two, maybe in two or three weeks.

Spring is coming

Fire

Flags

Golf

I think the biggest problem facing our country today is that we keep electing presidents who like playing the world’s stupidest sport, golf.

Conservative working-class life can be kind of fun. 🔫 🔥 🛻 🐮 🤠👨🏻‍🌾

I am not a conservative. If anything I’m libertarian leaning, but I also see the benefit of a state that helps people, especially through the kind of public services that are largely indivisible and free for all to use without discrimination such as public parks, plazas, mass transit and libraries. But that doesn’t mean I don’t think the conservative style of living is fun and has a lot of benefits.

I often think liberals are too intellectual, too concerned about others to have a little fun and relax. At the same time, many on the left lack the inhibition to be respectful of those with traditional values. Now I’m no bible humper or anti-environmentalist, but I think it’s fun to live a life of owning guns, having bonfires, riding quads and snowmobiles, hunting, fishing and farming. A life where you don’t spend your whole life fretting about other people’s problems, where your not worried about saving the planet or country, your just looking to have a little fun.

Conservatives are often seen as dour, but I think many on the left have adopted dour politics as a central tenant of their identity. And while it’s certainly important to control pollution and address racism, especially in our urban areas that are densely packed and impacts of pollution and racist policing tactics can be acute, people should be left alone and not looked down because they live a life different then the imaginary liberal ideal. It’s good to care, but you shouldn’t be so dour in your mannerisms and outlook on life.

What is a web log?

  • That’s a question I’ve been giving a lot of though to lately as I work on the latest revisions of the blog
  • I guess it can be anything I want as I have complete control of the content and design – within the technical limitations of my server and the WordPress platform
  • Over the years I’ve played with different designs, using mapping and GIS data in different ways
  • My latest revision to be released next week will focus a lot on aerial photography and the full screen beauty of the land
  • It’s kind of a work in progress but I’m trying to find new ways to both express myself and the world around me
  • I think it’s important to capture both the good and bad in society, both the new and old
  • I’m so fascinated and at the same time horrified when I look at both historical and new aerial photos of our changing landscape
  • So there is definitely more to look forward to next week
