John Boyd Thacher State Park

John Boyd Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.

Daily Update – May 7, 2022

Good afternoon! Happy Saturday.

Busy morning, I was up at six o’clock doing work. I feel guilty as shit for playing hookie in the wilderness last weekend while work fell on everyone.

Mostly cloudy and 54 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a east-northeast breeze at 14 mph. 🍃. The skies will clear tomorrow around 4 am.

In a little bit I am heading out to the folks house 👪 for Sunday dinner 🍔 a day earlier then normal because my parents are going out for Mother’s Day. Plus tomorrow is the tulip 🌷 festival and I’m going to help out at the Pine Bush booth.

I am thinking later of hiking Bennett Hill 🐮 🗻 and enjoying the view before dusk 🌆. It’s on my way out to the parents house so coming home I can hit it up. ⛽ With gas prices what they are these days I try to do whatever I can to consolidate trips and leave my big jacked up truck parked 🅿 as much as possible.

Probably one summer comes and the Nature Bus 🚍 returns that will be a regular thing to do on Saturdays when I’m in town. It’s fun to take the electric bus, pack a lunch, some books and a hammock and spend the day up at Thacher Park 🏞. And it doesn’t cost anything which is good with inflation so high.

Tomorrow after the Tulip 🌷 Festival I probably should go shopping 🛒 as I’m low on groceries and I need contact solution 👀 and other supplies. Probably Walmart as they still have the best prices with inflation and bulk packaging which means less to have to burn or take to the transfer station. ♻ I like lightweight plastics that can just be chucked in the garbage bag and get burnt. I hate washing out cans 🥫. Although fire 🔥 can be helpful for that too.

Weather Update – May 6, 2022

Cloudy, oh so cloudy. ☁️

Looks like up north will be a lot more sunny, but locally just clouds with rain tonight. I am going to try to get my steps in early before the rain, as who knows when it will come tonight, although maybe late. I guess maybe I will be able to get to the park tonight. 🏞 Last night I was down there walking, 🚶‍♀️ though I kind of wish I had brought a book. 📚 That said, I worry about the ticks 🐜 so unlike in years past I doubt I will be laying in the grass, 🌱 but will have to use a park bench. Pretty crazy yesterday at park with a ton of people out and about.

The weekend though looks like will be sunny. 🌷 Tomorrow after noon time when turkey closes 🦃 I want to do some hiking, 🚶‍♀️ and then I am going out to see mom and dad 👪  and then Sunday I said I will help out during the Tulip Festival 🌎 at the Save the Pine Bush booth.

Solar starting

While I do watch the voltage on the starting battery when I camp 🔋 it’s nice to know that solar panel is dumping excess charge into the starting battery ensuring that I can camp multiple days despite opening and closing the doors, using the dome light and other features, and it’s all automatic.

Weather Update – May 5, 2022

Attention black flies, warm and sunny weather ☀

The real heat doesn’t occur until next week but they will be waking in mass over the coming weeks at least in the Adirondacks and Greens. But it should be nice locally. I should put away the heated blanket and the electric space heater and get the big fan out of crawl space. And make sure I have ice cubes in the freezer to freshen my drinks. Some point I’ll have to get my inner tube out of attic and reinflate it but that’s a few days off before I’ll be using that.

Daily Update – May 5, 2022

Good morning! Happy Cinco de Mayo that Mexican beer company wants you to know 🇲🇽

LOL I know what today’s demographic map of the day should be. Burritos 🌯 and beer 🍻 are so good but have you seen the price of ground beef lately? Not cheap. I still remember when I was working remote and burned a hole in my brand new screen tent. Summer 2020, good times during the pandemic.

Mostly cloudy and 49 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a north-northwest breeze at 7 mph. 🍃. The skies will clear around 7 morningam.

Out walking 🚶 at six thirty this morning again before breakfast 🥣. The earlier start means a lot less traffic and smelly smoking cars parked around the High School 🚸. People forget how nasty and polluting cars are until you have to walk past them idling in the morning. Plus with that heat wave building its going to be the best time to walk next week.

Yesterday alternated between busy and quiet at work. 🏢 Got home at quarter to seven which in the grand scheme of things isn’t that bad. Today through the weekend I expect will be much busier at work but I should be able to work remotely on Saturday. 💻 Sunday I’ll be at the Save the Pine Bush booth at the tulip 🌷 festival.

Since adding the step tracking app to my phone, I’ve boosted my monthly step counts by nearly 33% 👣

Since adding the step tracking app to my phone, I’ve boosted my monthly step counts by nearly 33% 👣

It turns out that having set goals, measuring them and watching them every day really does improve one’s effort towards a goal. Walking may not make me thin, but it does feel good and is important to maintaining good health. Not only does it get my legs moving, it also keeps my mind sharp and gets me out of the hose every morning and evening enjoying the seasons and nature.

The 10,000 step per day goal is not above and beyond what the internet doctors recommend, but it does feel like a reasonable compromise between all things. But surprisingly until I started counting them I didn’t really have a good idea of how many steps I was doing every day. And now with that step counter, counting every day, I feel all the more important to get in my 10,000 steps. Any day I can’t get the record of at least 10,000 steps I feel like I’ve failed, so it’s a powerful motivation to get out and walk more each day.

Amazing the power of just a silly number.
