Day by day we are very to the weekend and April 1st. It’s going to be warmer out soon, including today and the mornings are getting brighter.
Good morning on this the final HumpDay ofMarch. Partly clear and 26 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ Calm wind. Things will start to thaw out at around 8 am. ๐ก๏ธ
Started out cold but expected to warm quickly today. ๐ธ I heard the spring peepers for the first time locally last night. Others said they’ve been out for a few days. Not really loud yet, it’s early in the season. Out for the morning walk ๐ถ not as dark as recent days with clear conditions this morning.
Today will be mostly sunny ๐, with a high of 55 degrees at 4pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 6th. The record high of 85 was set in 1946. 5.6 inches of snow fell back in 1984.โ

Tomorrow will have 12 hours and 40 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over today.
Got out of work at five 5โฃ and caught the express bus ๐ home which actually had the in service sign on. Same bad driver, I swear he was chatting with passengers ๐ฅ more than driving, swerving through traffic on 32. I guess it’s the end of his shift, he was tired. Walked 7 1/2 miles which these days is my effective weekday goal. ๐ฅ Kind of a chilly evening ๐ though I sat out back for a while before retiring to bed ๐ a little before nine.
Tonight will rain and have some snow showers, becoming all snow after midnight. Some thunder is also possible. ๐ง Low of 24 degrees at 6am. Been researching doctors ๐งโโ๏ธ to get my yearly physical now that I’m forty and undertaking my walk program. I am going to call today and see if I can make an appointment for after Easter to mid April. It’s not a rush but I want to get checked out before I do my thirty mile walk ๐ฃ this spring.

I’ve been thinking where to hike on Saturday if I want to do twenty miles. ๐ถ I thought about Thacher Park but I don’t relish climbing the New Salem Hill or all those miles on busy highways hiking. I’m thinking instead to hike to Hollyhock Sanctuary in South Bethlehem and if I’m up to it then Blodgett Hill.
Looking ahead, there are 6 weeks until Average High is 70 ๐ฎ when the sun will be setting at 8:06 pm with dusk at 8:36 pm. On that day in 2022, we had sunny and temperatures between 77 and 39 degrees. We hit a record high of 92 back in 1970.
Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. The final Monday of March as they say, although I could totally see the legislature suspending the clock ๐to get a few more days out of March and the fiscal year.
Mostly clear ๐ and 30 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. A bit chilly to start out the morning but it will warm up quickly as we are in the end of March. ๐ก๏ธIt’s nice how the mornings once again have more light and I can walk at 6 or 6:15 am in the morning before breakfast ๐ฅฃ. Truth is it works so much better for my mornings.
Today will rain likely, mainly after 5pm. Increasing clouds ๐๐๐ฆ๏ธ, with a high of 51 degrees at 1pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 29th. Good morning! Happy Saturday. It’s the weekend! Mostly cloudy and 30 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ Calm wind.Things will start to thaw out at around 7 am. ๐ก๏ธ
Not going to be the nicest Saturday ever ๐ง๏ธ so I’m out walking early. I was debating on where to go, I ended up on deciding on Five Rivers via Fisher Boulevard and probably Meads later. ๐ฎ That way I’ll have my five miles in and it’s a nice walk. I thought about Norman’s Kill Gorge as it’s likely not crowded but I like the more rural route and less walking through the city. ๐ Tomorrow maybe.
Saw the biggest gosh darn buck ๐ฆ by Jones Barn at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center this morning. I swear he was two thirds the size of an Elk. Ton of blue Jay’s ๐ฆ around. Robins and red winged blackbirds down by the ponds and the Nature Center. ๐ Air smells like burnt ABS plastic from the plastics factory ๐ญ in Fuera Bush. I can understand why they bought out all the houses ๐ directly down wind of the plant. It’s yucky.
Today will have a chance of rain and snow before 11am, then rain, snow, and sleet likely between 11am and noon, then rain after noon. ๐ง High of 39 degrees at 4pm. The high last year was 57 degrees. The record high of 74 was set in 1910. 1.9 inches of snow fell back in 1960.โ
This afternoon I want to finish up some of the library ๐ books I have then go down to the library and do some research for Save the Pine Bush. I was pleasantly surprised that I don’t have any work to do this weekend. โบ Next weekend I’m operating on the assumption I’ll be in the office ๐ข all weekend though maybe not with remote work or the fact that Jewish folk don’t work on Saturday. Plus it looks like next Saturday could be rainy โ but it’s the start of trout fishing ๐ฃ. I could go for some heart โฅ healthy fats caught myself and a night or two in the wilderness. โบ As long as I have cell service and aren’t too far from the Albany.
Solar noon ๐ is at 1:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 49.1ยฐ from the due south horizon (-21.7ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐ starts at 6:36 pm with the sun in the west (267ยฐ). ๐ธ

Yesterday I walked 11.8 miles ๐ฃ which isn’t bad for a work day but I started walking ๐ถ early, then took an earlier express bus ๐ in then walked the Plaza before work and then Washington Park ๐ at lunch time and then several laps on the Nature Trail at the Town Park.
Tonight will rain likely before 2am, then a chance of showers, mainly between 2am and 3am. Mostly cloudy ๐ง, with a low of 37 degrees at 7pm. It got down to 35 degrees. The record low of 2 occurred back in 2021.
Stupid express bus driver ๐ didn’t have his route sign and blew past me last night and I had to take the local home. ๐It’s not a big deal the local wasn’t running late and I was able to catch it. I probably should have called the dispatcher to complain. That driver is always skipping stops and going out of service often before he drops me off even though he’s paid to drive all the way to Voorheesville. I’m just annoyed as I expect late nights ๐ next week and not being able to take the express home. Maybe not every night though as the legislature rarely works late anymore since the pandemic and the made permanent pandemic era rules limiting the length of debate.๐ค
Looking ahead, next Saturday is April Fools Day ๐คก when the sun will be setting at 7:22 pm with dusk at 7:49 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 53 and 36 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 52 degrees. I’m ready for spring time. We hit a record high of 77 back in 1986.
Good morning! Cool and clear start to the Tuesday. Partly clear ๐ and 29 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. Things will start to thaw out at around 8 am. ๐ก๏ธ
I’ll be the first to admit that it is a cold start to the morning with the heat off ๐ธ but it’s spring and I’m not going to pay for heat if there is no danger of pipes freezing or excessive cold. Indeed this afternoon it should be in the mid 50s. That said, I was pleasantly surprised when I checked my February – March electric and gas bill was only $85. Heating blanket boosted the electric side of things a bit but keeping it at 48 except the coldest days helped a lot. ๐ต I was expecting a little bit over $100 for the bill like the January – February bill with the cold we had mid February.
Today will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny โ, with a high of 56 degrees at 3pm. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 8th. Light and variable wind becoming west 6 to 11 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 55 degrees. The record high of 78 was set in 1921. 6 inches of snow fell back in 1905.โ
What can I say, it’s going to be a a nice day. ๐ข Too bad I’m going to be in the office all day downtown. Now if we could only have another pandemic and I could be remote working from my truck at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center like I was three years ago. ๐ฆ Watching the birds while I wrote the memos ๐ and endless Zoom meetings. Those were the days.
Solar noon ๐ is at 1:03 pm with sun having an altitude of 47.6ยฐ from the due south horizon (-23.3ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐ starts at 6:31 pm with the sun in the west (265ยฐ). ๐ธ
I cooked up some of the wild salmon I bought on Sunday. ๐ I have to say it was tasty. And easier to cook than fish sticks or breaded fish filets. Healthier too. I don’t know why I had never done it before, you just take it out of the freezer in the morning, toss it in the refrigerator before work. Then in the oven broccoli ๐ฅฆ and also brown rice with lentils and seasonings – chilli ๐ถ powder and garlic powder. Being individually vaccum wrapped its more plastic than I would like but I’ve cut plastic out in other ways like not buying apple juice or as much milk and it’s a lightweight plastic bag that should make an excellent fire starter especially with the fish oils. ๐ฅ Really easy to bale that plastic wrap into a tight ball โฝ. Cost wise, it’s slightly more expensive but the portions are perfect and actually save money by ensuring you only eat the right amount as the rest is frozen and can’t be eaten right away. ๐ต
The sunset is in the west (271ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:09 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:36 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:10 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ and temperatures around 47 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 17 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over yesterday.
Last night I went to the Elm Ave Park ๐ and walked until dusk ๐ which was nice for the first time after work this year. ๐ถ It helps to get in the extra steps ๐ฃ and it’s fun to walk in the woods around dusk ๐ฆ and see what wildlife is out there. Still though not a lot of evening after dinner but it’s good to get to bed relatively early.
Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ฅ, with a low of 31 degrees at 5am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 30th. North wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 29 degrees. The record low of 2 occurred back in 1875.
Finished my taxes last night, ๐ and while checking the paper forms for my state taxes noticed that I hadn’t reported any Capital Gains on my federal taxes, panicked for a minute and double checked my investment statement and confirmed no capital gains received this past year as the market ended down ๐ so much this past year. I didn’t sell anything this year but in better years I do get some capital gains just from the index funds that sell off parts at times to make sure they are still accurately tracking the market. But not in 2022, as most of the leading stocks were down. Got lots of dividends though but I prepaid enough to cover them. I filed ๐ my federal taxes online but did paper state taxes as the state ones are simple as I’m a renter but not super poor so I don’t have any real state tax credits except for my contributions to my neices education account.
Not a particularly nice weekend on tap. ๐ Saturday, rain likely, possibly mixed with snow, becoming all rain after 8am. Cloudy, with a high near 40. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 47. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Typical average high for the weekend is 49 degrees.
I was hoping that the upcoming weekend would be warm and sunny โบ for camping at Rennselearville State Forest but I don’t think it’s likely. I was figuring the fire risk would be low if there is snow on the ground. The fire ban applies only to brush burning not campfires kept small and in eye sight. ๐ฅ
Looking ahead, next Tuesday is Average High is 50 ๐ธ when the sun will be setting at 7:17 pm with dusk at 7:44 pm. On that day in 2022, we had cold weather, partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 27 and 18 degrees. Debbie downer. We hit a record high of 85 back in 1945.
The day finally came when I was fully tested when my office had cake for somebody’s birthday. I said no. I knew it would be difficult and I would get push back for skipping the cake as I knew it was the right thing to do both for my future and my health. People thought I had been overlooked or something. No I just didn’t want cake, even if it was free and delicious. I went back to my private office and bit down on a banana for the sweetness, knowing that I had been left out by my intentional decision.
For a long time I’ve been going in this direction. Ever since I’ve been on my own I’ve eaten a lot of frozen vegetables and in recent years a lot of frozen fruit. But only lately has my desire to be healthier really bitten down hard, especially since turning forty. At first it was about limiting portion sizes and not stuffing my face with unneeded calories but it quickly morphed into more healthy eating and always having a good supply of fruits and vegetables at home and in my office for easy consumption.
What happened? I turned forty. I was reviewing my Mission Fifty plan and realized that I am not doing enough on my diet. Walking is good – doing a lot of steps, my savings plan is solid even if the markets are weak, I’ve learned a lot since my journey with my licensed mental health counselor and the time after it in self reflection. But what I was choosing to eat needed improvement.
The Skeptics Guide to the Universe podcast really hit home for me when they pointed out the simple truth about weight reduction. You can’t lose weight by exercise – it’s simply to easy to rack up calories with the sugary and processed foods that are so conveniently around us. But you can by reducing your intake of calories.
I never have eaten much fast food. I don’t like all the wasteful packaging or the cost of eating out. It’s always been rare for me to have cookies, candy or crackers at home. But the convenience of chicken paddies and what I thought was inexpensive pasta with sauce seemed like such a go to washed down by several cold glasses of milk or maybe apple juice. I don’t do soda but I like sweet and I’m a bit fan of the dairy industry and rural life more generally. I figured every cold glass of milk I drank was supporting hard working dairy farms and a working rural landscape.
But the truth is all those things are just a lot of calories, not easy to burn off easily. And there are a lot of easy healthier foods that can be cooked relatively easy. With inflation, prices are uber important. Brown rice with broccoli or other frozen vegetables is an easy option. I don’t cook it even with oil. Super cost effective too. Likewise oatmeal with frozen vegetables. I keep my freezer stocked full of frozen bags of veggies and fruits and my counter at work and home with lots of fruit. And I make fruit my go to when I’m hungry to boost my blood sugar. I’m looking to add frozen salmon to my freezer the next time I go to the store on Sunday.
I’m slowly eating up the remaining less healthy foods at home and do not plan to replace them. Instead I want fruit and vegetables to be the go to, backed up by bulk brown rice, lentils, kidney beans and other healthy easy things to cook and store. I will still do pancakes or bisquick biscuits from time to time or even occasional vanilla low fat yougurt I got which is amazingly tasty with fruit. Or even eggs with a lot of veggies. But in moderation.
As I don’t eat out, what I put in my grocery cart is ultimately what I eat. My pantry is under my control. I don’t ever want to be hungry, indeed part of my food choices going forward really seeks to have as low of a glycemic index as possible to avoid being hungry and over eating. But that free cake threatens to undermine my goals.
Good morning! Happy Saturday. Finally the weekend! Snow and 30 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐จ There is a north breeze at 10 mph. ๐. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. โ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at around 9 am. ๐ก๏ธ
Out for the morning walk at 5:45 am today. ๐ถ Dark at the start of the walk especially with snow coming down but pretty. I wanted to get used to getting up early and maximize my weekend – plus avoid walking in the rain โ should it warm up later in the day.
Today will rain showers and snow before 1pm, then a slight chance of rain showers between 1pm and 3pm. ๐ง High of 41 degrees at 2pm. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 8th. North wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 51 degrees. The record high of 70 was set in 1977. 4.1 inches of snow fell back in 1941.โ
Not sure how nice a day it’s going to be today โ so my plan is when I get home ๐ก from the morning walk ๐ถ to explore some various things in code and maybe work on some blog content ๐ฅ and do some reading ๐. I also want to go down to the library ๐ before five 5โฃ and then my evening walk.

Today in 1993, Janet Reno is confirmed by the United States Senate and sworn in the next day, becoming the first female Attorney General of the United States. โ๏ธ I’m not going to say anything more except to say history is her judge. I don’t have warm and fuzzy thoughts about the 1990s.
Looking ahead, there are 3 weeks until April Fools Day ๐คก when the sun will be setting at 7:22 pm with dusk at 7:49 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 53 and 36 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 52 degrees.
