Good afternoon! After the snow last night, things are melting quickly on this Martin Luther King Day. βοΈ
We got a half foot of snow, but it was so warm that it didn’t take long for the snow to melt. I shoveled off the truck, looked at all the rust spots that are appearing, and cleaned up around the doorway and the truck. The landlord’s contractor came by and finished up driveway, and it should be good once things freeze up tonight.
Mostly cloudy, around 36 degrees in Delmar, NY. βοΈ There is a south-southeast breeze at 13 mph. π. There are 6 inches of snow on the ground. β οΈTemperatures will drop below freezing at around 5 pm. βοΈ
I do need to wash the salt off my truck, π but I doubt I can make it home from the car wash without getting things covered with road salt. It’s just tough this time of year when everything is so salty. πΏ I went shopping yesterday, so I am good for the week but I might try to get to the car wash this week if the roads aren’t too salty and maybe return beer cans, which have been sitting in my kitchen since camping in December. β»οΈ
Today wasn’t as cold and windy as expected π¬ and for a while the sun actually came out and it was pretty nice for cleaning up the snow. But it sure was a heavy wet, back-breaking snow to shovel. If there was much more moisture in that snow, it would have been rain. It’s just an La Nina year, in our warming climate, so when it cold enough to snow, it’s bound to be super sloppy. Going to get cold this week it appears though.
Yesterday, I got in 17,000 steps between Partridge Run and doing my evening walk π£ which was good. Today I’ll try to do the super block, so that will probably count for like 5,000 steps plus whatever I got in while shoveling, when I didn’t have my phone on to meter me. π€³ It’s really not as bitterly cold as they once predicted with the wind, but I wish there was more sun. π Didn’t last for long. I want to be out too before all that snow melt turns to black ice.
I went out to my parents house for Sunday dinner, π½ and had a nice meal of stew and did my wash out there. π I have been typically coming out for Sunday lunch as I don’t like driving in the dark, but I wanted to get out and do some hiking in the nice weather before the snow came in. π Fortunately, the drive home wasn’t super dark. Some nights can be so dark. No moon, but I think with the clouds and the light reflecting off the city, it just wasn’t super dark. I took NY 32 all the way back to city, which is a much easier drive.
In four weeks on February 12 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (252°) at 5:23 pm,π which is 36 minutes later then today. In 2021 on that day, we had cold, partly cloudy and temperatures between 16 and 3 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 35 and 17 degrees. The record high of 55 degrees was set back in 1932.
The word “COLD” is repeated a lot in the forecast. π§£π§€
This certainly would not have been the weekend to head out of town. π Even Sunday looks cold. And who knows about Martin Luther King Day. Looks to be a mixed bag, as much as anything. Probably more ice, so I can slip and fall and actually do damage to my body π£ this time. I got to be careful with those dress shoes and the ice.
But maybe like last time, they will have sidewalks well salted in a day or two, and with the sun on Tuesday things will start to melt away, even if it’s cold. Kind of weird how some days will be quite cold, while other days will be warm enough to count as late February. Who knows what next month will look like?

Good afternoon! What can I say, but it’s cold outside. π§€
I thought about walking out to Five Rivers earlier, and actually it didn’t look too bad around dawn but then the winter picked up. Now, maybe it’s not too bad, as the winter is pretty still. I might go down to the library in a bit.
Partly sunny and 10 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a north breeze at 14 mph. π. The current wind chill is -6. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. β Things will start to thaw out at Monday around 9 am. π‘οΈ
I think it would be good to go down to the library π mainly so I can get a few steps in before it gets dark. At times with the sun out it doesn’t seem that bad, but then the breeze picks up. Cold days like this aren’t that uncommon in winter, but with all the drama of the news, I am quite happy to stay home, after a rather busy week at work. π«
While I was up around 5 AM, π I hid out in my bed well into the morning hours, turning on the electric blanket, as the heat downstairs is falling behind a bit, plus I don’t want to turn on the upstairs baseboard heat, because it’s been years since it was run, and it will stink if I turn it on from the dust. Despite the sun, the mornings are just so dark this time of year, although we are picking up some sun in the morning.
Ahead of the 2021 shopping season, Walmart removed its layaway program, one of the last vestiges of this service from a major retailer, and replaced it with the “buy now, pay later” service Affirm.
Layaway allowed customers to pay a deposit on an item that would be “laid away” or put into safekeeping by the retailer, and later pick it up once they fully paid for it. But as other payment methods have taken its place over the years, retailers have removed the option.
