Then again, that is to be expected this time of year. And indeed, it’s been a lot colder in years past. This weekend seems a bit cold for going up north, but I will take it one day at a time, and decided based on how windy and what the ultimate forecast looks like come the weekend, which may very well change. Lots of sun though, and not much snow in the forecast.

After all, it must be cold, because the news media is reporting it. π¬ But honestly I think I’ve heard one gust of wind this morning, and honestly I don’t think single digit weather is all that cold, when I can remember plenty of negative -5 and even -15 degree nights in the not that far away past. Maybe mostly before the panademic. The sidewalks have been salted and with yesterday’s sunlight and breeeze are pretty much clean although the driveway is still a bit icy.
I probably could have and should have gone for a walk last night, πΆβοΈ as it honestly wasn’t that cold but I didn’t. It’s supposed to be super windy out, but honestly the breeze is light. Maybe it will be colder later if the breeze picks up but what do I know. That said, I doubt I’ll be running out to the bus extra early, and taking the local, properly dressed, I probably will spend pretty minimal time outside. If it wasn’t a session day, I might walk laps in the Plaza, but I really loathe walking inside wearing the muzzle regardless. π·
I don’t have a colored television or streaming or even Internet at home, so I have no idea what it is, but I know my niece is a big fan of Frozen. And certainly everything is frozen this morning after yesterday’s ice and it’s only going to get colder, with a strong wind later. π¬ Going to have to bring the wool hat and scarf when I don my, in the words of Don Miller, politician suit, going back and forth to work. It’s going to be a late night at work, but I don’t care, I have that brass lamp in my office that I think so highly of and I don’t pay for the heat at work so it should be nice and warm. π
The weekend looks cold, but maybe still I’ll head of town βοΈ if it’s not too snowy and cold. I am going back and forth between the Adirondacks, Central NY or maybe a more local state forest. βΊ I’d like to get in two nights of winter camping during the long Martin Luther King Day Weekend. π€ Not sure if that’s going to happen though as it often can be bitterly cold this time of year, and the roads snowy and icy.

Good morning! An icy Monday’s come back around again. βΈ
Pretty much anything that didn’t get well cleaned up yesterday is a skating rink with the cold this morning, which will only get colder as the day progresses. We will making a run for a zero later. I don’t think I will turn down the heat before leaving for work today.
Mostly cloudy and 24 degrees in Delmar, NY. π₯ There is a northwest breeze at 14 mph. π. The current wind chill is 12. There is a inch of snow and ice on the ground. β οΈThings will start to thaw out at Thursday around 11 am. π‘οΈ
Everything is kind of a skating rink βΈ outside, it was a careful walk down to the local bus π after making sure to leave the kitchen cabinets open, heat turned up and the door securely closed. I’m hoping that they get the sidewalks cleaned up before I get home. I could have salted at home but I figured the landlord may do it later so why duplicate efforts? I don’t have that much salt, it’s more reserved for camping and emergency. Maybe I should have worn my black boots and carried my dress shoes into the office. π Maybe tomorrow. That’s how I ended up my dress shoes being in the office for 13 months last year during the pandemic.
Yesterday was a pretty quiet day. π€« Spent some time unplugging the vacuum, doing some cleaning in the kitchen and bathroom and some vacuuming. Had a nice breakfast. π₯ More pancakes. Also been studying how to time series analysis in R for some projects I want to do go forward, including looking at seasonality and other trends.
But tomorrow it will be nice, especially if it’s as cold as predicted, π¬ βοΈ as I expect the gas heat will fall behind. Certainly a lot cheaper then baseboard electric heat or even the little space heater I only use very occasionally, mostly when I first come in from the cold and want some hot air blown in my face without turning up the heat. β¨οΈ Got to leave the cabinets open before going to work tonight, so the pipes under the sink don’t freeze, not that I’ve ever had trouble with that, although the hot water is mighty cold in the shower at first when it’s negative 15 out, as was the case a few years back. But the landlord always texts me asking to leave the cabinets open.
This used to the coldest week of the year, π¨ but lately winter has been trending later and later, with the real cold blasts usually coming in February, although the climate normals show the coldest weeks of the year on average are now the third and forth weeks of January. It used to be this week back in the day, but things have changed with the changing climate. And real cold days aren’t nearly what they once were.
There has been a mouse in the roof that has been annoying lately. π I’ll have to leave a mouse trap out in the kitchen at some point, but honestly I don’t care that much. Mice are just part of living, nothing to be freaked out about. I haven’t seen many mouse droppings in the kitchen lately or mouse damage, but I see a mouse the other night under the oven. I need to get some peanut butter for that, but I don’t know if I will be by a store until the weekend. The cold has driven them inside. There not like the big grain-fattened rats I used to find climbing up the rafter in the barn as a kid. π
I cleaned off the truck, π» yesterday when it was warmer in the afternoon chipping the ice off the windshield and solar panel. π With the cold I want to trickle charge both the accessory and starting batteries on my truck to keep them healthy in the cold. It’s so nice being able to leave the truck parked for a week π Ώ and then in the cold have it start easily with a full charge.
On New Year’s Day, when Eric Adams was sworn in as the 110th mayor of New York City, in his right hand he raised high above his head a framed portrait of his mother, Dorothy Mae Adams-Streeter, pictured in a brandy snifter. His left hand rested over her Bible, where she kept notes, letters and old pictures.
“I was raising my right hand, lifting her up, as she lifted me up,” Mr. Adams said in an interview. “Who would think that eventually, because of what she instilled in her son, that he would be in Times Square, being sworn in as the mayor and holding up her photo?”
The brandy snifter portrait is as American as hip-hop, acid-washed jeans and plastic-covered sofas. A photo in that style could conjure the same feelings that oversize shoulder pads or a Jheri curl would: cringe. In 2001, the motif was spoofed by “Saturday Night Live” in a skit that featured Alec Baldwin and Jimmy Fallon, called “Put It in a Brandy Snifter.”
But in the 1980s and 1990s, the brandy snifter photo was an innovative, attainable luxury, and it became ubiquitous in some communities. Its cultural significance is closely tied to the ambitions of the American working class.
Night before dawn is 6 hours and 53 minutes, Dawn starts at 6:53 am and runs for 31 minutes, Sunrise is at 7:24 am which is 4 hours and 35 minutes before noon, High noon, the transit of the sun, is at 12:02 pm, From twelve noon to the sunset at 4:39 pm is 4 hours and 39 minutes, Dusk lasts for 28 minutes concluding at 5:10 pm, Leaving 6 hours and 49 minutes until midnight.
Get a little bit of everything. But the real cold comes Monday into Tuesday, but I’ll just have to bundle up for work, and try to avoid waiting out for the bus too long in the morning, by using my phone to monitor real-time bus progress. And ultimately it doesn’t matter if I’m in the office how cold it is as they’ll have the heat turned up there. Then maybe some weather that feels more like late February for the second half of the week. Not warm but moderating.
