I got home, had dinner and rode the exercise bike for a while π², almost an hour and a half. I rode while listening to Marketplace through my laptop and the radio adapter, then I watched a YouTube video I had downloaded on orienteering with a compass. For a lot of people that’s quaint with cellphone GPS π but I know most of the time I’m in the woods I use paper maps and just use visible landmarks to orient myself although sometimes I’ll use the compass but that’s rare. I went for my evening walk πΆ and it started to rain π¦which meant I got wet on my way home. Then I retired to bed and read π for a while. I’m tired π΄ and going to sleep shortly.

Are you in the market for a vehicle? During the 2007-09 recession, new-vehicle sales plunged to their lowest levels in nearly 30 years. They have since fully recovered as people replace their aging vehicles with shiny new cars, trucks, vans, and sport utility vehicles. Prices of new vehicles, however, are at all-time highs, leading many buyers to look for used vehicles. It can be a challenge, though, for buyers to figure out whether they are getting a good deal. The seller generally knows far more about the vehicle. Even with careful examination, the buyer still likely won't know everything the seller knows. When one party knows more about the product than the other party, there is "asymmetric information." In the case of a used car, the seller has more informationβand the advantage. The opposite can also be true in a transactionβthe buyer can have more information and the advantage.
Dozens of laborers and factory operators sit hand-cuffed in rows on the pavement at an industrial park in Malaysia. They've been detained in a government raid on unlicensed plastic recyclers as the country seeks to curb a growing illicit industry. "It's illegal," said Yeo Bee Yin, Malaysia's Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change, who attended the raid and had invited journalists to watch. Malaysia is cracking down on opportunists who are trying to cash-in on China's decision last year to ban plastic waste imports. Since July 2018, officials have shut down at least 148 unlicensed plastic recycling factories -- but have only pressed charges against a handful of suspects. Much of the waste comes from countries outside Malaysia, including the US, which angers Yeo who says wealthy nations shouldn't be using her country as a trash dump. "I will take care of my own rubbish," she says. "You should take care of yours."

No hope for sun for a while. β I brought my rain coat β and I fully expect rain this weekend. At least I’ll save money staying home this weekend. My finances haven’t fully recovered from April, although it helps that May is technically a three-paycheck month. But I have projects to do around the apartment and if it gets nicer on Saturday afternoon I might walk out to Five Rivers. πΈ Even the long-range outlook doesn’t look great for Mothers Day Weekend π·. It’s possible the next weekend I get out of town will be Memorial Day Weekend, to fight the black flies. π

I’m continuing to research car insurance but the truth is motoring is expensive in New York. I’ve seen differences in the estimates in the quotes I’ve been getting but they are fairly small, when you compare similiar policies, not bare-bone, almost zero coverage the policies that websites suggest to you to make them seem like your saving money. It looks like they are fairly standardized and I’ll put them in a spreadsheet and compare on each line for the list of 3 to 5 top line companies. π Then I’ll look for reviews online of the services they offer and a full breakdown of what each line means. I have to September to decide. I want to have affordable insurance but I want to protect the money I’m saving for my off grid home from lawsuits should a terrible wreck occurs and I give some five year old permanent brain damage. Information is power. π€
