Dirty-Nine – Or I was so much older then, I’m younger then now

Dirty-Nine: Or I was so much older then, I’m younger then now. ๐ŸŽ‚

After all these years I still really like that Bob Dylan song, that the Byrds gave such a rocking melody to. Maybe not the most up-to-date song ever played on the radio, but then again I don’t really follow commercial radio stations and their endless promotion of violence and pornography, DWI lawyers, laundry soap and the government workers. Do anybody even listen to the radio anymore, or is just Mp3s they got decades ago from the Napster and it’s GNU equivalent? I do sometimes listen to the BBC or NPR in the morning for news bulletin, but I can’t stand the endless whining and boosterism of preferred liberal or conservative causes of the reporters.

Truth be told, dirty-nine feels no different then 38. But it comes with the satisfaction of knowing that you have made it professionally, that you are a valuable member of the team where you work, where my years of experience have paid off. Where the years of working tough roles with difficult clients and long hours, landed you the nice corner office with the brass lamp and wooden desk, a good salary and a fairly demanding job that requires me to think, be on my toes and make sure the information that my unit puts out is the best it can be. I might just be the deputy director, in the smaller office with the mismatched furniture, and less fantastic views, although least I’m no longer the most tenderfoot of directors agency-wide. There is always room for growth, although I guess it slows as you reach higher up. Of course my standards are relatively low – remember I grew up in a neighborhood where most people dropped out of high school, raised pigs and cattle to survive, lived in trailers and burned whatever they needed to keep warm or get rid of.

Many people who make the kind of money that I do might go out and buy fancier clothing, a new car rather then my increasingly rust-bucket big jacked up truck, a nicer apartment or house. They might go out and get a television or have internet at home. Or even turn the heat up above 50 or 55 degrees in exceptionally cold weather. They might have air conditioning or home internet. They might try to escape the self-imposed poverty, where I find myself still to this day essentially living paycheck-to-paycheck, where my bank balance at times reaches into the single-digits above the minimum, or even temporarily falls below. Where I try to avoid all unnecessary expenses, such as driving, buying expensive food in packaging I have to pay to throw away at the transfer station, or wasting money heating my apartment and planet too much. My poverty is because I’m committed to a better tomorrow, saving the maximum for retirement and future investments.

I am pretty much aware I am at my mid-point of my life, maybe even somewhat past the mid-point. After all, there is no guarantee of tomorrow, I have no idea if I will die crossing the street tomorrow, or have a heart attack and die at age 92. But 78 seems like a reasonable number, if you look at the statistics for somebody my age, my gender and my community. And I think the best is yet to come. Living frugally right now, means my expectations for the future are low, and even if the investments and savings don’t all work out in the end, I already know how to live with less, on a life with a much lower paycheck then what I am earning now. And if I die tomorrow or next week, well I look it at this way, I didn’t blow the money on a bunch of garbage that has to be thrown away the next day or in a few years.

One of things I’ve learned about buying shit is it never is really great. Most things break quickly, wear out and have to be taken to the transfer station to be hauled off to the landfill. Advertising is a lie. But dreams are always free and they don’t wear out. A focus on the future, saving and investing feels so good, as a dream and an idea can not break in one’s mind, as it is just a dream. Playing on the Zillow house shopping app, or #ManureMafia Tiktok is free and doesn’t wear out like physical shit. I have unlimited bandwidth and my phone is cheap. The number in bank and investment accounts are good to look at, even if in many cases they only exist on the screen, they can’t be easily converted into actual stuff, at least in the short-term without a big tax penalty, assuming the markets aren’t in the crapper. Not because I value money for the sake of money, or because it can buy a lot of shiny bling, but it certainly can at some point buy land, livestock and implements.

I look around and it seems like a lot of people have things much nicer then I have. They take fancy vacations, they have fancy houses and nice toys. A lot of people like resorts, I prefer drinking cheep beer up in the woods, having fires where I can burn sometimes sketchy shit while listening to country music 50 years out date. Okay, I have my big-jacked up truck with the camper shell, but that’s mostly my one guilty pleasure, probably that I wouldn’t do again. Many of the big spenders though probably make less money then I do at this point. But most people who earn good money are throwing it away — they have a full garbage can every week — while I have a better chance of having a secure future, even if things start to go terribly wrong in the world. And even if I don’t make it to that better tomorrow, at least I won’t have a wasted it all on bullshit and trinkets. If I were to spend my hard earned on bull, I’d at least want a manure spreader and hay equipment. As the Love of the Land Youtube channel puts it, cows make manure which makes more hay and manure. The truth of the midlife crisis when yo realize much of what people value smells like fermented silage.

Less then one year when I am 40 years old. It feels like I was just in my 20s a few years ago. But how fast we all go grow old. I am sure the 40s will be a time of change in my life. I probably can’t live forever in my dumpy old apartment I’ve had since graduating from college, it just keeps falling apart further and further, each winter a little more drafty and each summer more moldy. Heck, even my landlord is getting quite elderly, he might sell it to a developer who knocks it down, replacing the converted-horse barn apartment with asbestos siding for high-end condos. My slummy apartment seems so out of place in a neighborhood where they keep building vinyl-sided crap that yuppies dig. But it fits me well, with my hillbilly small town roots. Yet, I want to own my own land eventually, and maybe that will happen during those years. And not in the suburbs or with vinyl siding, which is root of all evil. I’d rather have goats fertilize my lawn then chemicals.

Maybe in my forties I’ll try out new career opportunities or even consider moving out west where I can burn whatever and own whatever guns I want, although it will be hard to pass on my job that right now pays such good money, and the work is rewarding and fun, even if at times the hours are long. But I’m well aware things change, and they don’t last forever. I can’t take the world of today forever for granted. That’s in part why I continue to expand my skills, learn more about data science, Python, R and GIS mapping — all good skills to build on top of my professional management, communication, research and political skills I build every day at work. Certainly having some money saved up and a frugal lifestyle opens up opportunities not otherwise available to somebody who actually lives paycheck to paycheck.

Who knows, a lot could change tomorrow or more likely not. By building a solid foundation for my future, and being content with life now without a lot of shit, seems like a reasonable plan as the days of the year tick away towards forty. The truth, is 40 isn’t that far off, especially when I think back that it’s been 21 years since I graduated from High School and a decade and a half since college.

Indeed, my hope is be mostly retired by 55, which is a little over 15 years away, to focus on my own land, my off-grid property, getting to know the earth and trying to protect myself from the disorder that is certain to happen with accelerating climate change. Our warming climate is not just bad news for our planet, it’s likely to make our country even more disorderly and divided. But that’s a thought for another day!

So yes, Happy Birthday, Dirty-Nine to Me! ๐ŸŽ‚

No cake or sweets for me today, and it’s darn cold in my hoodie in my apartment, but I am fairly content with the way things are today, and know the best is still yet to come. Or if it’s not, I’m still satisfied with the way things are today, even if there is a rust and dust around my apartment, and it’s darn cold.

November 30, 2018 Evening

Happy Weekend! Snow showers and 33 degrees in Delmar. โ„ Calm wind. The air remarkably chilly, seems like there is a lot of moisture in the air. The bus was a few minutes late. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 6 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Well, another week has come and gone as has another month. 📆Creeping further into the future, it strikes me hard to believe in a little over a year we will seriously be talking about 2020.🎇 Tomorrow is December, but I have both the proper registration and inspection stickers on the truck now. A CD matured today, I added enough to double it then reinvested it at a higher rate. One step closer to owning land and being off grid. 🏡 Those days are a ways off, but I know with careful planning I can get there just like I did buying my truck and college education with cash. Just takes time. โณ

I think it was a good week, a lot was accomplished during those days. 💼 One week closer to warmer days and the snow melting away, one more day closer to my future. I went for another lunch hour long walk around the plaza. I’m getting to know the ins and outs of the various hallways I can do in the plaza,to mix things on up. No lights in my office yet but I followed up with some people. I think now it will get fixed. :idea:I like my job, especially statistical analysis part of the work and seeing communication ideas become reality.

Tonight will have a slight chance of rain and snow before 7pm, then a slight chance of snow between 7pm and 8pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 27 degrees at 1am. Typical for tonight. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2017, we had cloudy skies with some clearing in the early hours of the next day. It got down to 31 degrees. The record low of -5 occurred back in 1875.

Tonight will have a Waning Crescent Moon 🌘 with 37% illuminated. The moon will rise at 12:41 am. The New Moon is on Thursday night with mostly cloudy skies. The Cold Moon 🌝 is in 3 weeks. The sun will rise at 7:05 am with the first light at 6:34 am, which is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 14 hours and 43 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 24 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 38 degrees at 2pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 8th. Calm wind. A year ago, we had mostly cloudy skies, clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 45 degrees. The record high of 67 was set in 1934. 3.7 inches of snow fell back in 1969.โ„

Looking ahead to Sunday, rain, mainly before 1pm. 💦 High near 45. Southeast wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Doesn’t sound like it will be super wet during the day time hours but night will rain a lot, probably killing off some of the snow in places. Typical average high for the weekend is 41 degrees.

Traffic is moving fairly well heading out of the city tonight. 🚌I’m glad, as I’m tired and looking forward to getting home. I think I’ll cook up some dinner, maybe work on some projects and retire to bed quite early.

Saturday looks quite nice, maybe a bit brisk but sunny for a change. 😎 Rain though Sunday night so I doubt I’ll head out to the wilderness for an overnight. One possibility is hiking out to Five Rivers or I might go to Schodack Island State Park and combine that trip with my weekly shop. I don’t need a lot of food and supplies but a few little things. Figure I should save gas however possible. Rainy and cloudy but fairly mild Sunday.

I was looking at the past snow accumulation maps for December 1st,โ„ and this has in many parts of the state been the snowest start to the month in fifthteen years. Usually November is not nearly as white or as cold.

That said, it’s increasingly looking nice for next week. I may take a few days off, might even spend a few nights in the wilderness.🌲 It all depends on the weather and what I feel up to doing.

In four weeks on December 28 the sun will be setting at 4:29 pm,🌄 which is 6 minutes and 35 seconds later then tonight. In 2017 on that day, we had snow, mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 8 and -5 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 32 and 17 degrees. The record high of 61 degrees was set back in 1982.

Looking ahead, First Day of Winter โ˜ƒ๏ธ is in 3 weeks, 4:30 PM Sunset 🌆 is in 4 weeks, Winnie the Pooh Day 🍯 is in 7 weeks, 5 PM Sunset 🌆 is in 8 weeks , March 🌨 is in 13 weeks, Ides of March โœ is in 15 weeks, Memorial Day Weekend Starts 🏕๏ธ is in 25 weeks and Dog Days of Summer 🌻 is in 31 weeks.

Bachelors Degrees Are a Wealthy Suburban Thing

If you ask many people today, the assumption would be almost everybody has a Bachelors Degree, if not more education then that. Yet, except in the most suburban (and wealthy) portions of state, Bachelors Degrees are relatively uncommon — often held by fewer then 1 in 10 people over 25 years of age.

Fascinating book to thumb through

It turns out there is a close connection between suburban lifestyles and having a bachelors degree. Zoomed into closer into a map of the Capital District, you will note how closely link suburbanization is to number of people with a bachelors degree.

Engine Run

That said, obtaining that Bachelors Degree might be worth your while — if you avoid college debts, and land a good job after college. Indeed, the wealthiest portions of state tend to have the highest percentage of those with Bachelors Degree, e.g. the suburbs.

Got 18650 battery charger and batteries

It’s probably wrong to assume one is wealthy or well off with a Bachelors Degree, or that all rural folks are backwards hicks leaving in poverty. It’s more that the more affluent (in money terms) suburban life tends to require more schooling then more rural or urban occupations.

Daily Update – March 25, 2022

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday!

Partly cloudy and 40 degrees at the Elm Ave Park and Ride. ๐ŸŒฅ Sun is starting to peak out a bit. Fog ๐ŸŒซ around, especially in the city. There is a west breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Sunday around 7 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

I still haven’t turned the heat back on but I see the forecast for Monday with a high of 27, โ™จ so I know what that means. I think it will be in the teens by morning. That said, later next week โ˜€ sun in temperatures in the fifties and sixties.

While yesterday was quite dreary โ˜”, I did manage to get in 13,000 steps between the before work walk ๐Ÿšถ in the drizzle and an evening walk down at the park, doing lapses along the Nature Trail along the Phillipen Kill. ๐ŸฆŒ Saw several white tail and heard Nut Hatches I think ๐Ÿฆ and certainly by the time I was heading back home I heard the spring peepers ๐Ÿธ quite happy with the somewhat mild conditions and the rain. No bats ๐Ÿฆ‡ around last night, too cold.

Got milk ๐Ÿฎ before bed ๐Ÿ› and retired to my bed around eight 8โƒฃ. Not sure if when the evenings get longer if I will stay up later, probably though especially when it’s hot inside and starry โœจ and relatively nice out back. There is no reason why I need to get up at five in the morning in the summer although it might be cooler out then for a morning walk before work.

One of the people we were interviewing yesterday listed R Studio ๐Ÿ“Š as one of his skills on his resume. Apparently it’s a big thing in colleges these days, which is kind of neat ๐ŸŽ“ as I find it’s a very useful tool for analyzing data and making maps and graphs. ๐Ÿ—บ Well you know, I use it nearly every day to create blog content. For Census data and thematic maps and graphs its a wonderful tool. PANDAS and Python also gets a lot of use in college these days. I kind of wish I was younger and could have learned about such things in school.

I’m glad tomorrow is the weekend ๐Ÿ˜ because it’s been a long weekend. Four day session days and while only one day I stayed late the endless Zoom meetings ๐Ÿ“น and interviews were tiresome. You want to do other things during Zoom but then they yell Ferris Buehler. ๐ŸŽก I should get a dress shirt or two tomorrow but I kind of don’t want to spend money on gas โ›ฝ and it might rain for walking in the Pine Bush. ๐Ÿฆ‹

Good Morning – September 7, 2021

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. โ˜€

Except for the muzzle, everything is pretty much back to normal for a September day after Labor Day, although I think tomorrow will be the day when the worse of the heavy traffic peaks with the kids back in school tomorrow. ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿš๐Ÿš•๐Ÿš—๐Ÿš‘๐Ÿšš๐Ÿš›๐Ÿš“๐Ÿš—๐ŸšŒ

Mostly sunny โ˜€ and 58 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 54 degrees.

It seems like everything is oddly normal for this September day, ๐Ÿ‚ except it’s not with the muzzles and still only a single bus om the half hour and no express buses downtown. ๐Ÿš It’s a sunny, deep blue September day, much like September 11th two decades ago when I was a freshman in college ๐ŸŽ“.

Twenty years is a nice round number โœŒ๏ธ and this cool blue September brings me back to those days in college. There was such a world of possibilities ahead of me, it was a time of change. Maybe I should have explored more options, although I like my current job because I can take the bus to it and it pays well – even if we live in inflationary times and money goes quickly – and I got a nice view of the mountains. ๐Ÿ—ป

Been doing a lot of reading ๐Ÿ“– about the R language this weekend, the programming language of statistics analysis. I am not sure if R language is really that much better then Python data science packages but I think it’s good to know both and supposedly R makes better graphics. ๐Ÿ“Š Charts and graphics are so important in the era of social media. I installed R studio last night on my laptop ๐Ÿ’ป even though I already had R language installed.

I keep seeing ads for data science classes ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿซ trainings and certifications but my interest in data science primarily is as a hobbyist – to process data and make graphics for my blog and social media – and support my GIS and map making projects. ๐Ÿ—บ That said, I can think of many uses of both R and Python data science for things at work nowadays and it’s a good skill to have – if I practice and use it daily I will get good at in a few years – and if I decide to get some kind of certification in the future – if you a master at it will be an easy thing to do. Plus I can imagine making good charts and manipulating data is a good skill to have, even in a non data science position.

I need to run to the library ๐Ÿ“š tonight and return some books. I don’t think I’ll bring my laptop down there, it’s mostly going to be in and out. I don’t like working inside the library with the required muzzles these days. ๐Ÿ˜ท I also need to get to the store this week ๐Ÿ›’and I should get my flu shot. ๐Ÿ’‰ I don’t want to get the flu for sure.

December 16, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tea Party Day ๐Ÿ! Honestly if you are going to dump a bunch of tea, ๐Ÿต I think it would be better to dump it and mix it with a bunch of manure ๐Ÿ’ฉ for composting then dumping it in the Boston Harbor โš“ where it can deplete the dissolved oxygen in the water ๐Ÿ’ฆ. But I agree ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป we are over taxed and we tax the wrong things – namely income over carbon emissions and waste generation. ๐Ÿ’ธ Next Wednesday is Festivus ๐Ÿ–. I am still banned from my parents meatloaf which is loaded with Worcester sauce after telling them I preferred the stuff a college ๐ŸŽ“.

It’s the calm before the storm. Mostly cloudy and 13 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a north breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Things will start to thaw out at Sunday around noontime. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

It’s a cold morning โ„ and it looks like we are now going to get more snow ๐ŸŒจ than originally expected. But who knows. Kind of cold for my morning walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป and I keep putting my phone in my pocket and sticking my hands ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป there to stay warm. โ™จ I guess working from home ๐Ÿก means the snow won’t effect me much but it never did because the buses ๐Ÿš run regardless of the weather. ๐ŸŽ„ It doesn’t look like much snow up north which is good if I want to get up there for Christmas weekend. Debating if I should put a tarp on my truck over the cap and windshield for easy snow removal. โ˜€๏ธ I like to keep the batteries ๐Ÿ”‹ trickle charged off the solar when it gets cold.

Today will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a high of 24 degrees at 2pm. 12 degrees below normal. Northeast wind around 6 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light drizzle by afternoon. The high last year was 34 degrees. The record high of 55 was set in 1971. 9.5 inches of snow fell back in 1981.โ„

I have kind of busy day today but I’ll work from home most likely. ๐Ÿ“ถ Those 3d maps are fun but I need broadband to make them. But it would be a cold day to work at the library parking lot so I think I’ll stay home. The other work stuff I can do from my phone moving the files ๐Ÿ“‚ to my laptop for editing.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:52 am with sun having an altitude of 24ยฐ from the due south horizon (-46.8ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:38 pm with the sun in the southwest (231ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (238ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:24 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 4:55 pm, which is 18 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the southwest (220ยฐ) at an altitude of 13ยฐ from the horizon, 235,459 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:32 pm. At sunset, look for cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 24 degrees. There will be a northeast breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 3 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 23 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will snow, mainly after 8pm. The snow could be heavy at times. ๐ŸŒจ Low of 21 degrees at 8pm. Typical for tonight. Northeast wind 9 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 8 to 12 inches possible. In 2019, we had light rain in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 26 degrees. The record low of -8 occurred back in 1942.

Yeap, it’s going to snow ๐ŸŒจ. I think I can probably do my evening walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป if I can get an early enough start there shouldn’t be too much snow on the ground and walking in the snow is always nice. Thursday morning maybe not so much but I could strap on skis I guess. ๐ŸŽฟ

Today in 1965, the Vietnam War would escalate. ๐Ÿ’ฃ General William Westmoreland sends U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara a request for 243,000 more men by the end of 1966.๐Ÿช– And in Cleveland, Ohio becomes the first major American city to default on its financial obligations since the Great Depression. ๐Ÿ’ธ Good ol Dennis Kuchich and the big creditors of the Cleveland Power and Light company. A big set back for the public power industry ๐Ÿญ. You don’t hear much from Dennis Kuchich anymore but I guess he’s pretty elderly ๐Ÿ‘ด๐Ÿผ now. But aren’t we all getting old?

It looks like we will have decent snow for the weekend. โ„ Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 29. Sunday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 35. Typical average high for the weekend is 35 degrees.

I am thinking that Saturday would be a nice day for cross country skiing ๐ŸŽฟ at Schodack Island State Park. I could then stock up on groceries ๐Ÿž๐Ÿฒ at Aldi’s. They have an interesting of variety of things for cheap although less bulk than Wally World.

As previously noted, next Wednesday is Festivus ๐Ÿ– when the sun will be setting at 4:26 pm with dusk at 4:58 pm. On that day in 2019, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 50 and 18 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1990.
