Green Mountain National Forest Camping 🏕

In the Green Mountain National Forest there are a variety of back country roads, offering primitive roadside camping.
- Campsites are free to use, and have no facilities except for a fire ring and a pull-off from the road, and sometimes a site reinforced with gravel.
- As noted below, some campsites have additional facilities.
- Don’t make a mess of campsites, pack out any garbage left over.
- Burn only dead and down trees, don’t bring in wood from out of state.
- You can camp up to 14 days per 30 day period in Green Mountain National Forest — no permits are required.

North Half of the Green Mountain National Forest

Austin Brook Road: There are three easily accessible campsites by Austin Brook on Forest Road 25 in Warren. They are all within 0.25 mile of State Route 100.
Bingo: Forest Road 42 in Rochester runs alongside a mountain stream; camping is allowed at designated sites only. These 10 campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a limit of 10 people per site. Check the Bingo Brook bulletin board for designated site locations and other site limitations.
Downingville: There is one secluded site in a small clearing near a mountain stream on Forest Road 291 in Lincoln.
Fay’s Meadow: There are a few sites in an open meadow in Forest Dale. Please do not drive on the meadow because a farmer mows the hay from it. There is a stream for wading and fishing at the north end of the meadow.
Goshen Brook Road: There are a few campsites in and around an open area just beyond the turnaround at the very end of Forest Road 67 in Ripton.
Kettle Brook: A small meadow site at the end of Furnace Brook Road in Pittsford.
Michigan Brook Road: Forest Road 35 in Pittsfield provides many camping opportunities in the woods and along Michigan Brook. The road is not recommended for low clearance vehicles.
New Haven River: There are a few campsites next to the New Haven River at Emily Proctor and Cooley Glen trailhead, on Forest Road 201 in Lincoln.
Romance Header: A large meadow campsite at the end of Forest Road 224 in Forest Dale. A stream lies to the southeast of the meadow.
Sparks Landing: There is one site in a small meadow on Forest Road 233 in Lincoln. There is good fishing in Sparks Brook, which lies just south of the meadow.
Steam Mill Clearing: There is a large open field on both sides of Forest Road 59 at the Skylight Pond Trailhead in Ripton.
Texas Gap: These old fields and side roads on Forest Road 39 in Hancock offer many camping opportunities.
White River & Gulf Brook Roads: Secluded camping, open fields, and beautiful views are offered from the abundance of primitive campsites found along Forest Roads 55 & 101 in Granville.
South Half of the Green Mountain National Forest

Branch Pond Road: Several sites on this road off of Kelley Stand offer good camping opportunities.
Forest Road 71: This forest road stretches from the old Somerset airfield to the Kelley Stand Road. Campsites can be found in various spots along the way, and along some of the forest roads leading off of Forest Road 71.
Forest Road 74: This forest road is a little less remote than other roadside camping opportunities. Off Vermont Route 9, it dead-ends a couple miles in. Campsites are found unevenly spaced along the way. This area fills up early as it’s one of most accessible.
Kelley Stand Road: Connects the towns of Arlington to West Wardsboro, traveling along an unpaved forest road. A handful of campsites are avaliable on this road, many of the sites along Roaring Brook are permanetly closed.
Old Job: Off Forest Road 30 there are a few camping opportunities; an open area along FR 30, and both an open field area and a site near Lake Brook at the end of FR 30.
Somerset Airfield Campground is a small primitive campground along Forest Road 71. There is a pit-privy and fireplaces in this field camping area. Also popular is Castle Brook Road, near the Deerfield River. This area fills up early, and is known for rowdy crowds but is good if you have a big camper.

Thanks for this. It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for. Have you been to the downingville location? I’m planning on going Friday and I’m curious as to how many people know about it and if people may already be there.
I think there is only one campsite up by Downingville, but honestly I don’t remember really exploring it much. There are some campsites along Steam Mill Road and Natural Turnpike.

There is no camping permitted on Kelley Stand Road.
Correct, due to the construction. Although there are several sites near Kelley Stand Road, including Forest Road 71.

These maps should be helpful. Dispersed campsites in the Green National Forest are informal, you can camp in most portions of the forest without restriction.

I wish I could remember if there was seasonal use gates on the road, the last time I was up there, but I honestly don’t remember. I don’t remember them being there, but it was like 3 years ago since I was last up there.
Bingo Brook Road to the campsites is not plowed in winter.
Hi I was wondering if you had any suggestions on the best place to camp, without being too far remote in case of emergency. We wanted to bring our 10 month old (at the time) with us and don’t want to be too out of touch with civilization just in case.
Branch Pond Road in Kelly Stand has limited cellphone service, and your not too far from Arlington, although Kelly Stand Road is pretty narrow and twisty to get up there.

It shouldn’t be a problem. The campsites are all informal, and except for the most popular sites, are usually quite available. If you can’t find one right at the end of the road, consider going a little farther back.

Other than Kelly Stand, are there any areas with cell phone service in the southern part of the park nearest MA?
Not as far as I know of … I’ve always camped at Forest Road 71 (Kelley Stand) when I needed cellphone reception. I don’t think there is any reception off of George Aiken Wilderness Road (as Google Maps calls it, don’t remember the number).

There might be some snow from the past weekend’s storm but there was only a dustsing that is gone up in the Adirondacks.
I have a 19′ Rockwood Roo Hybred camper. Any of these suitable for us? We have solar and water and don’t need anything because we have our own dumping station at home.
Probably your best bet would be the Somerset Airfield Camping Area. Other then that, there might be a few of the more open sites along Forest Road 73 north of the Somerset Airfield – I would drive it first with a car or truck though to spot check it
Also, depending on when you go, it is still muddy and snowy up there (was cycling there on Saturday). Some roads are still gated til mid-May conditions dependent. To know the current conditions of the roads, call the Green Mt. National Forest Manchester Ranger District.
Hello thanks for the great information. Is there any dispersed camping at all in VT or strictly site camping.
Most of these sites are dispersed camping. They are just areas to pull off along the road, usually with a fire ring made out of stones. Many are quite grassy.
This is so incredibly helpful; thank you! I am wondering your thoughts on the best spot in the southern portion for two or three families looking to camp for a couple of weekend nights this summer. I used to go dispersed camping in national forests in Colorado all the time but haven’t yet here in New England. Are they super busy or are you likely to get a spot on a typical Friday or Thursday afternoon? We have a toddler so we want somewhere safe in terms of revenes and cliffs, too close to water etc. thanks for any wisdom or advice you might have to share!

There are several campsites along Forest Road 55 along the gorge of the headerwaters of White River in Granville, VT. Not real close but not real far away either.
Also, I once camped off of Forest Road 59A at Forest Road 131, it’s just a barecaded driveway with a fire pit, around N 43.99670 W 72.97252. It’s about one mile from the end of the Natural Turnpike — which is a very scenic road to drive.
We are going camping this weekend, trying to look up maps but not very good ones. Is there a place that I can get a clearer location of the different sites.

Andy, this has been a life saver in helping me plan our first dispersed camping trip to VT to see the fall colors. Only one question…..Which places has the best reception (Verizon or AT&T). My son will be remote learning and I will be remote working. Thought we could make the best of this time and camp for periods, but connection is a must. I was thinking the White River and Gulf Brook Roads area looked most promising for having a water source (to filter for use) as well as being secluded and in full fall color. Any tips? We leave Oct.1st.

The lower part of the road isn’t terrible but towards the end it gets rougher. Been years since I’ve been up that way.
I was just there and going back. I drive a Ford Edge and it’s not bad for me at all. Some bumps are pretty rough but I’ve seen all sorts of small cars in the last few weeks there. Just be careful you should be fine. But I wouldn’t recommend going once there is ice or snow in anything other than a SUV or large truck.
We are interested my finding a spot for a long weekend next summer. We sent sometime up along Kelly Stand and notices some tents were set up int he same spot all summer. IS that allowed
There are spots along Kelley Stand where camping is not allowed. It is signed, and mostly on the Western side of the road, closer to where the homes are and along the river. Just watch the signage along the road. Some spots go fast that are for camping. There is one spot I always want, that people always claim for the duration of the 14 day limit set by the Green Mt. Natl Forest. Someday I’ll luck out! Good luck! Happy camping.
No. Unfortunately, there are several people with both campers or tents, who have selfishly made many of the campsites their own. Don’t quote me, but I believe the time limit is 14 days, and that the site must be occupied by humans every 24 hours.
I saw one guy at The Airstrip, trying to circumvent the rules by moving 3 different large campers from one end of the site to another. Another, at George Akin, (road 74) had his site torn down and packaged in trash bags left by the roadside.
Due to lack of resource$, enforcement is scarce and lax. It’s sad that some take advantage, rather than to share public resources designed for all to use.

Andy thank you for this page. I’ve been searching the web for a while now trying to figure out the camping situation in the green mountain national forest and haven’t had much luck. This site was very helpful to me. I’m heading up that way this weekend from Connecticut to get my eyes on some sites and wondering if there are any closures or restrictions and the Southern part. Never done any camping up there but would love to do some car camping in the next week or two in that area
Most of the roads this time of the year are closed or impassable due to snow. You might be able to get to up Somerset Airfield but I don’t know if any of that is plowed during the winter. I believe north of there, the road is gated.

I do drive a small SUV so I will give it a chance this weekend when I drive up that way just to check it out and get an idea of what to look forward to and if car camping it’s a possibility this time of year. Jay B- Call the Manchester Ranger District Green Mt. National Forest office and find out if FR71 is plowed to Somerset Airfield. They haven’t updated their website with a Winter Road Closure reminder in ages. The Long Trail Hiking – GMC Community facebook group sometimes is a good resource. You can also “off season camp” in some VT State Parks. The info is on their website.https://vtstateparks.com/camping.html. A quick online application with fast turnaround (I’ve heard this year) is all you need, but you’d have to follow their guidelines and walk in.

This is amazing. Thanks so much for this. While Maine and the ADKs have an abundance of free camping, Vermont’s is under the radar. I lived in Central VT from 2012-2015 and struggled to find good freebies.
This summer I plan on getting to a number of these. While I am fairly certain I know where I am going, I have some questions on the forest road IDs. I’m sure a proper VT road map indicates the forest road #, but google maps is not cooperative. Do you by any chance know the road names for Forest Roads 55 and 101 in Granville, Forest Rd 39 in Hancock, and Forest Rd 42 in Rochester (Bingo Brook, so I am assuming Bingo Brook Road?)

Had a great couple of days on the north end of FR71 up by the Appalachian Trail crossing.
Tight by the Stratton-Arlington Road there is a big off road location – probably would take four cars. I didn’t want neighbors so headed south. I missed out on a great singleton just S of the AT crossing then took a twosome – the next site. Traffic on FR71 seemed to only be campers and died out about 8:30pm (midweek). No hassles. Site was pretty clean.
Switched over to Grout Pond ($) for one night. Fine location but got rousted around 11pm by some locals in a jacked-up pickup – deer spotters full on, music up to 11. No harm, but just so ya’ know. I guess the area has a bit of a rep for that sort of thing.
Thank you for posting this. We are experienced hikers trying out dispersed camping and this is a gem of information on where camping is allowed within the forest. Thank you for the detailed listing.
Thanks for all this great info! It shows me the sites but I see nothing on weather a camper can fit in or strictly tent sites.I”m starting planning a year early.Next year we want to do a covered bridge tour of Vermont and would like to find places that would fit a 24 ft camper as we hop from north to south following the fall foliage down the state.Could you recommend maybe three areas that would fit a 24 ft camper one in the northern NF One Middle and one southern? I have a four by four xterra so dirt roads are fine,I just don’t want to get boxed in where I can’t turn around and half to back a trailer miles back down the road. We will be on a three week vacation and have only just passed thry]\u vermont before.Want to see the whole state this time.

Depends a lot on the site, some are bigger, and some are smaller. Most are better for smaller vehicles.

Great web site. You had a photo of the Rochester CCC camp. Where did you find it. Any other VT CCC camp sites?
I am a former teacher from Delhi in the Catskills and author of 11 books: three are on the fire towers of the Catskills and Adirondacks and three on the history & lore of the Adirondack, Connecticut and Rhode Island CCC camps. In writing these books I have been fortunate to interview over 200 CCC boys and have been able to preserve their life stories and their work in the CCC. This has become my passion to find out more about the CCC and spread the news to the nation about their great accomplishments.
Over these years I have gained info and photos on the CCC camps in VT because many of the men who lived in CT, RI and MA were assigned to camps in VT. I have now begun my concentration on gathering more information for a book on VT CCC camps.
I would like to know if your organization has any information on the projects the CCC did in your area. Also, do you have any old photos or photos of buildings, dams, roads etc. that the CCC constructed that are still in use today. If you do please send me jpeg photos and label them. I will give you credit for any photos and info you send me.
Would you Know of any CCC boys who are still alive that I could interview or any family members that have photos or stories?
I am also gathering information on the 70 CCC camps in Massachusetts for a future book.
In my journeys I have written three travel books : Adirondack 102 Club, The CT 169 Club and RI 39 Club. These are passport books containing the history and interesting places in each town.
I would also like to know if you would be interested in me giving a Power Point talk on VT CCC Camps.

Can’t tell you how resourceful your website is. Can you recommend an off-road remote site that would be good for a group? Feel like GMNF is our best bet but if you have a suggestion for something within 1 hour of here to the East, West, South – would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any info.
Not sure which part of state your looking at, but maybe the large field campsite at Forest Road 279A about five miles north of North Landgrove, just off of Forest Route 10? This is a nice campsite as it is very large, field camping but also remote. Probably popular in summer though, I camped there in November before big game season when nobody was around.
