May 28, 2018 10 PM Update

Good evening! Well folks, Memorial Day Weekend 2018 is almost one for the history books. A fairly rainy one mid weekend but at least by Monday evening it cleared out a bit.😎 A day where we honor our war dead and question our leaders 🇺🇸 for such folly cutting so many lives short through violence instead of listening. ✨

Brilliant Flower Moon tonight with partly cloudy and 69 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌝There is a south breeze at 7 mph. 🍃. Almost too bright with the moon to see my laser lights flickering out back. I’ve noticed they sometimes coax our an occasional real firefly and they’re so pretty but the brushed DC motor they use is so loud and obnoxious. 🔕The dew point is 58 degrees. Very pleasant sitting out back. My truck is parked on the grass because tomorrow morning, probably early the landlord is sealing the driveway.🏡 While my rental isn’t perfect he does keep things in decent shape.

I struggle to accept that Memorial Day Weekend 2018 is just one for the history books, but for all the wishing for the unofficial kick off of summer to get underway, my experience with the long weekend is it often one filled with intense black flies in the wilderness🐜 or tent catapillars and often is either cold and rainy or incredibly hot and humid. 💦We certainly got all of this past weekend except maybe for the tent catapillars

The weather often improves in June although we can get devastating storms rolling through in June. I remember one year driving out to Brookfield to camp for the weekend, quickly ducking south to Cooperstown to avoid a severe storm with rotation coming up the US 20 corridor. June will be a pretty busy month for work but I still plan to get up to Potholers at least once if weather conditions allow for it.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ☁, with a low of 63 degrees at 6am. 11 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 61 at 11pm. Almost a summer like night, not too humid. South wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2017, we had mostly cloudy skies. It got down to 55 degrees. The record low of 34 occurred back in 1956.

The sun will rise at 5:21 am with the first light at 4:48 am, which is 36 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 8 hours and 57 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 26 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have patchy fog before 8am. Otherwise, sunny 🌞 , with a high of 84 degrees at 3pm. 11 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 64 at 10am. With that modestly humid temperatures it looks like tomorrow will be the hottest feeling weather of the year so far. Calm wind becoming north 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly cloudy skies. The high last year was 61 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1931.

It wasn’t a bad weekend all things said and done. Sure we could have had better weather but I really had stuff I needed to do at home and my bed at home is more comfortable than my truck bed. Now that I’m in my second half of my thirties I’m starting to think I need more than just a handful of Styrofoam pads to sleep on at night. 💤 I’m not as young as I once was even if my parents insist I’m not going gray as fast as I think I’m getting every time I look in the mirror. 👴 At least I don’t have much to be concerned about going bald in my family history.

Not a particularly nice weekend on tap. πŸ™ Saturday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 79. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of 62 at 6am. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 72. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 57 at 6am. Typical average high for the weekend is 74 degrees.

In four weeks on June 25 the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm,🌄 which is 13 minutes and 36 seconds later then tonight. At that point, only a few more days before the sun sets start happening earlier. It’s a cycle if you hadn’t noticed before. In 2017 on that day, we had thunderstorm with rain, mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 80 and 58 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 80 and 59 degrees. The record high of 95 degrees was set back in 1898.

Looking ahead, Labor Day 👨‍🏭 is in 14 weeks, Consitution Day 👨‍🏭 is in 16 weeks, Columbus Day 🛥️ is in 19 weeks, Veterans Day Observed (Monday) 🇺🇸 is in 24 weeks, Cyber Monday 🛍️ is in 26 weeks and New Years Eve 🎆 is in 31 weeks.

The Historically Hazy Story of Donora’s Deadly Smog

"THE RESIDENTS OF DONORA, PENNSYLVANIA, knew their riverside factories were dirty long before 1948. They could tell which sector of the American Steel and Wire complex was producing the bulk of the day’s pollution from the air’s tintβ€”the open hearth produced reddish-brown exhaust, the blast furnace’s was black, and the zinc works, possibly the worst of them, emitted a noxious yellow smoke, a result of the sulfur dioxide with which it was laced."
