August 25, 2016 Night

Good evening! Partly  cloudy and 73 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south breeze at 7 mph. The dew point is 71 degrees. Making for some pretty sticky weather for packing everything up for heading up to the Adirondacks for the weekend. Going to be a nice late summer weekend. Right now there is some clearing but the skies will become mostly clear tomorrow around 11 am.

Went out for my evening walk a bit earlier then normal. Got back, gassed up my truck, and bought a few groceries and the supplies I will need for camping. Packed my truck and put the kayak on the roof.

Decided to head up to the Adirondacks for the weekend. I’m going to camp up at White House or Pumpkin Hollow, and go to the Wells or Speculator Beach. Do some fishing then either paddle the flatwater section of the Sacandaga River or maybe Elm Creek. Do some fishing. And generally enjoy the beautiful weather.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1am. Patchy fog after 1am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low of 67 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 71 at 10pm. South wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. The record low of 40 occurred back in 1942. Waning Crescent Moon tonight with 42% illuminated. The moon will rise around 12:54 am. The New Moon is next Thursday at 9:03 am with partly cloudy skies expected. The Full β€œCorn” Moon is on Friday, September 16th at 7:05 pm.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before noon. Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high of 87 degrees at 3pm. Kind of a hot day with temperatures eight degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 72 at 9am. Light and variable wind becoming northwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. The record high of 98 was set in 1948. The sun will rise at 6:14 am with the first light at 5:44 am, which is 1 minutes and 4 seconds later then yesterday.

Looking ahead, First Day of Autumn is in 4 weeks, First Day with More Night then Day in Albany is in 1 months, Last Recorded Day Above in 90 in Albany is in 6 weeks, First Day with Average High Below 60 is in 8 weeks, Thanksgiving is in 13 weeks, Buy Nothing Day / Black Friday is in 3 months and Christmas is in 4 months.

August 25, 2016 1 PM Update

Tonight’s sunset won’t be really worth it, as it will be rather muggy under cloudy skies. Β 80 degrees at sunset, with aΒ dew point pushing 70 degrees. Thunderstorms are likely.Β Pretty yucky for your outdoor plans. There will be a south breeze at 9 mph.

The sun will set at 7:40 pm with dusk around 8:09 pm, which is 1 minutes and 38 seconds earlier than yesterday.

Waning Crescent Moon tonight with 42% illuminated — but not until late. The moon will rise around 12:54 am and set around 1:34 pm. The New Moon is next Thursday at 9:03 am. The Full β€œCorn” Moon is on Friday, September 16th at 7:05 pm.

August 25, 2016 Afternoon

On this day in 1950, President Harry Truman orders the U.S. Army to seize control of the nation’s railroads to avert a strike. So much for the boy from Missouri being a socialist.

From History.com:

In a public statement that day, Truman insisted that β€œgovernmental seizure [of the railroads] is imperative” for the protection of American citizens as well as β€œessential to the national defense and security of the Nation.” He used the same justification for seizing control of steel plants when the United Steel Workers union struck later in the year.

The railroad strike lasted for 21 months. Finally, in May 1952, the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, the Order of Railway Conductors and another union, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, accepted the Truman administration’s terms and went back to work.

And from Railroads.com:

Truman’s first move was to order the establishment of an emergency board that would negotiate with the unions and attempt to settle their qualms before the strike began. However, the unions rejected the conditions set outright and still seemed determined to strike by August 25th. It was then that Truman stepped in, ordering the US Army to seize control by 4 PM on August 27th. The seizure was successful, although the strike went on nonetheless.
