There were several to be spotted along the Catskill Scenic Trail with tons of golden rod and purple flowers on their early autumn day.
Taken on Saturday September 11, 2021 at Perkins Clearing and Speculator Tree Farm Conservation Easement Lands. While I do worry about excessive vaccine advocacy and over promising and under delivering on vaccine safety and effectiveness, the truth is it seems like vaccination should be the least of folks worry living in our modern world with so much pollution and often under tested chemicals in common use and disposal.
There are big problems with air pollution from automobiles, factories and buildings in cities that are often under studied and prematurely deemed safe. The mix of tailpipe emissions from cars and buses is enormously toxic, even if it’s not as bad as a few decades ago. Tires become worn and dust, as do brakes leaving their toxic detritus along the road side for all to breathe.
Maybe clean living – eating healthy food and exercise can and does help a lot. But truth be told our environment is filled with toxins all around us thanks to industrialization and technology and there isn’t much we can do to avoid it. Industrial pollution is everywhere.
The purpose of the bypass pumping system is to keep the pump station operational with river water flows to the Central Air Conditioning Plant for the Empire State Plaza. The intake cannot be shut down for any significant length of time and therefore the bypass pumping system is essential for maintaining flows to the plant while the intake is being modified. The bypass intake and pumping system was approved as part of the original permit plans (Dwg. PC-005). However, discussions with the contractor likely to be selected for the project suggested that the pumping system as laid out would not provide the intended flows and would have to be reconfigured with the pumps located on barges in the river. HDR engineers revisited the design and determined that the original design would not work. The total maximum daily flow the bypass pumping system must be capable of pumping is 60 million gallons a day (60 MGD) which equates to 42,000 gallons per minute (gpm). The bypass pumping system consists of centrifugal self-priming end suction pumps. Self-priming pumps are required as the elevation of the pump is above the elevation of the water level. Therefore, the pump is required to evacuate all air from the piping system in order to flood the pump suction with water. These pumps utilize the pressure of the atmosphere to lift the water higher than sea level and into the pump itself. The pumps, when using atmospheric pressure in assisting with pushing water into the pump itself, are capable of “lifting” the water a maximum of 25 feet above sea level. Therefore, the maximum height the pump can be located above the water level is 25 feet. The height will be even less when taking into consideration pipe friction losses, leakage, wave movement above the pipe, etc. As can be seen from the surveyed elevations of the project site, the only feasible on land location (within OGS property limits) for the pumps is at elevation 23.25.’ The pump centerline is 3 feet above this elevation. The high water level in the river is elevation 5.70. The low water elevation is -5.10. Therefore, the total lift that the pump must overcome at low tide is (23.25’ 3’-(-5.1’) = 31.35’, which is more than any pump is capable of lifting water. Additional information on the pumping system is provided in memo located in Attachment B.
The coming week looks fairly unsettled but quite mild, but not too hot. Maybe a nice weekend next week? π But this work week looks a bit stormy, so I will have to take it day by day.

It’s just so tough to swim in 60 degrees water. I can do a few laps before my muscles get hardened up from the cold.
Partly cloudy and 77 degrees at the Mine Kill State Park. β There is a west-southwest breeze at 11 mph. π. The dew point is 66 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 11 am.
Did some nice hiking yesterday. I hiked the Windham Path outside of Windham – a scenic nature trail right outside the village and then did the Catskill Scenic Trail πΆ – a lightly traveled rail trail between Grand Gorge and Hubbell’s Corners, through the deep gap where there headwaters of the East Branch of the Delaware River run. π» I wasn’t planning to drive through Windham but I ended up going that way as I got gas in Durham and got on the wrong road heading up over the ridge. β½
I always forget how big and dramatic the mountains are in the Catskills around Windham β° as I rarely get up this way – and the places with the good camping on backcountry roads tends to be relatively flat. I like the mountains a lot but my feelings about the Catskills and all of New York State are kind of mixed. π I just feel like taxes are so high in New York State π΅ and the state really likes to punish rural communities.
I was hoping to camp at Duck Pond again but that campsite was taken. π So I ended up camping on Betty Brook. I kind of like that campsite, it’s fully off the grid and is small so it’s easy to light and set up although it’s always a bit of a challenge to get Big Red backed in between the trees. π²π²π» It got pretty muddy as I decided to take Red up Burnt Hill Road from Blenheim and that section is kind of rough. Muddy too, Big Red will need a bath π this week.
Looking Glass Pond was drained, π£ so no fishing while I was up there, although there was a dad and their kid working a trap line π harvesting muskrats along the shore line when I was walking there. π½ Got sweet corn and veggies at Shauls and then went for another swim. πββοΈ But alas the water π¦ is so cold so it’s hard to swim.
