April 2, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Five weeks to Flower Moon πŸŒ•. By then things will have greened up a lot. Mostly cloudy and 37 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a north-northwest breeze at 8 mph. πŸƒ. The skies will clear Saturday around 3 pm.

Today will be mostly cloudy πŸŒ₯, with a high of 50 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 29th. North wind 8 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Kind of another cold and gray day out. ☁ But spring is definitely coming. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 53 degrees. The record high of 77 was set in 2010. 8 inches of snow fell back in 1924.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:59 pm with sun having an altitude of 52.5Β° from the due south horizon (-18.3Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. Sun is getting much higher in the sky now. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 6:46 pm with the sun in the west (272Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west (278Β°) starting at 7:20 pm and lasts for 2 minutes and 55 seconds with dusk around 7:51 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous πŸŒ” Moon in the south-southeast (148Β°) at an altitude of 67Β° from the horizon, 232,170 miles away. πŸš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:26 pm. At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 46 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 14 mph with gusts up to 24mph. Today will have 12 hours and 48 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of rain, mainly after 8pm. Cloudy 🌧, with a low of 40 degrees at 1am. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 22nd. Northwest wind 9 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. That said, I’m looking forward to nice summer nights sitting out back. πŸŒƒ Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2019, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 32 degrees. The record low of 16 occurred back in 1954.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. πŸ˜• Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 55. Calm wind. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 60. Typical average high for the weekend is 53 degrees.

Honestly I don’t think this weekend will be pretty nice. ☁ I do need to get to the store 🏬, gas up β›½ and do laundry. πŸ‘šπŸ‘– I really like Aldi, it’s so fast and easy out which is good during the pandemic. What else to do? If it’s really nice on Sunday, hike at Partridge Run? Maybe a similar route to two weeks ago but maybe further back on some of the roads in the back section? Probably want to stay off trails as they are going to be real muddy. 🐽 Then probably Thursday leave for the Adirondacks if the weather is good.

I still want to get the alignment issue looked into my truck, I’m going to decide on Friday if I should do it now πŸ”§or wait for the pandemic to be over – my concern is that may be a while and when it’s over the shop may be very backed up. But who knows, they might not be open now.

Looking ahead, there are 5 weeks until Flower Moon πŸŒ• when the sun will be setting at 8:02 pm with dusk at 8:34 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 66 and 49 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 67 degrees. We hit a record high of 92 back in 1930.

Off Blueberry Hill

March 31, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 43 degrees in Delmar, NY. πŸŒƒ For a while it cleared out this evening after sunset and it was really nice. There is a north-northeast breeze at 6 mph. πŸƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 2 am. β˜ƒοΈ

I sat out back for a while with a book πŸ“– and it was nice ✨ until it started to get cold. For a while the moon was out and the stars were shining. πŸŒ— Earlier on I walked down to the Elm Avenue Park β›² to get some podcasts to listen 🎧 to as I haven’t been on the internet since Sunday except for my phone πŸ“± and I guess you could say the Zoom session for work but that was on my work computer which is just for work.

Today I spent a lot of time playing with an experimental theme for the blog. πŸ“ I am trying to make the pictures more prominent, tell my story and experiences better. I figure while I’m home I should see how to better my blog before camping season starts. I am not sure if I will use the new design or only parts of it but I like experimenting with code.

Another pretty quiet day at work, it was fun setting up the lights and figuring out how to do Zoom πŸŽ₯ and make it look good on my end. I’ve done other training classes on Zoom but those have been mass trainings with the camera off. I just know when things finally start getting back to normal at work, things will be so busy to make up for lost time. At least by then hopefully the weather is nice enough that I can work outside most days. 🌳I don’t mind the idea of social distancing under a tree on a sixty five degree with a laptop, as long as I’m not stuck inside my moldy apartment.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy πŸŒ₯, with a low of 30 degrees at 6am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 28th. Northeast wind around 6 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 26 degrees. The record low of 9 occurred back in 1923.

Tonight will have a First Quarter πŸŒ“ Moon with 47% illuminated. At 8 PM, the moon was in the southwest (222Β°) at an altitude of 67Β° from the horizon, some 237,670 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. πŸš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by September 28th. Buckle up for safety! πŸ’Ί The Pink 🌸 Moon is on Tuesday, April 7. The darkest hour is at 1:00 am, followed by dawn at 6:11 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:39 am in the east (83Β°) and last for 2 minutes and 55 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 45 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 7:17 am with sun in the east (90Β°). Tonight will have 11 hours and 15 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 53 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 55 degrees at 4pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 7th. Light north wind increasing to 6 to 11 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 42 degrees. The record high of 77 was set in 1986. 5 inches of snow fell back in 1924.❄

I decided against the Adirondacks for this weekend but maybe the long weekend next. β›Ί Not a lot of snow left along the East Branch but it looks like at this point it will be melting away. I assume I’ll have Good Friday off next week. 🐰As Easter dinner with the family seems unlikely at this point, I won’t have to rush back next Sunday and there will be virtually no traffic. But who knows what the weather will be like by next week. I could use some social distancing next to a fire πŸ”₯ with some cold ones in the Adirondacks. If I do go up north, I’m not going to hike any mountains but I might hike back to a remote lake or waterfall when I’m up there where I’m not likely to run into many people.

My thought about you working from the Green Mountain National Forest come nicer weather in May β›Ί is probably not going to come to fruition with the state requiring out of state visitors to quarantine. It was a crazy idea, truth be told but with my phone πŸ“± and laptop πŸ’» and solar on my truck I probably could have made it work. After all you can stay in the Green Mountain National Forest for 14 days roadside camping without a permit. Having ice to keep the milk cold would have been a pain but I know the areas up there where I have decent phone service. I’d probably remove my front New York plate once I set up camp to be safe (Vermont has become a one plate state).

I am a little hesitant to get my truck worked on right away πŸ”§because I know the alignment issue isn’t essential but it ought to be addressed. I was going to wait until I got new tires but I want to try to get another year out of the existing tires to buy more time to decide what I want to do with Big Red – go carless for a few years? Not sure. The thing is I know it’s not an essential repair and every social contact is one more chance of picking up Coronavirus. πŸ‘Ύ While I’m relatively young and healthy, and I still have the good state health plan, I don’t want to be on a respirator at the hospital during the middle of a pandemic. πŸ₯Let’s be honest, cars are full of greasy and dirt and mechanics are driving different peoples cars all day and aren’t necessarily washing hands between cars. 🚘

In four weeks on April 28 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (291Β°) at 7:52 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 31 minutes and 52 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 51 and 40 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 64 and 42 degrees. The record high of 92 degrees was set back in 1990.

Looking ahead, 7:30 PM Sunset πŸŒ‡ is in 1 weeks, Cinco de Mayo 🀠 is in 5 weeks, Primary Day πŸ—³οΈ is in 12 weeks, Election Day 2020 πŸ—³οΈ is in 31 weeks and Election Day 2020 πŸ—³οΈ is in 31 weeks.

March 31, 2020 Morning

Good morning! March is almost done. Tomorrow is April Fools Day and the start of trout season. I bet with all the people out of work it will be difficult to social distance at all the good trout pools. 🎣 A sign of the times. At least the days are getting longer. Next Tuesday is 7:30 PM Sunset πŸŒ‡. Clouds and 38 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ Calm wind. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 4 am. β˜ƒοΈ

Today will have a slight chance of rain and snow showers before 9am, then a slight chance of rain showers between 9am and noon. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a high of 48 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 25th. Light north wind. Chance of precipitation is 20%. I’m actually hoping for some sun later, as I want to go to the library or Five Rivers to get some podcasts and upload content that I can’t easily do with my phone. πŸ“± A year ago, we had light rain in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 60 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1998. 14.6 inches of snow fell back in 1997.❄ That’s one of the later snow fall records although back in the early 1980s we had a couple big ones in April.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 1:00 pm with sun having an altitude of 51.8Β° from the due south horizon (-19Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 6:44 pm with the sun in the west (271Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west (277Β°) starting at 7:18 pm and lasts for 2 minutes and 55 seconds with dusk around 7:49 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter πŸŒ“ Moon in the southwest (217Β°) at an altitude of 68Β° from the horizon, 237,690 miles away. πŸš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:23 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies πŸŒƒ and temperatures around 45 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 12 hours and 42 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy πŸŒ₯, with a low of 32 degrees at 5am. Typical for tonight. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 26 degrees. The record low of 9 occurred back in 1923.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. 😎 Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 57. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 59. Typical average high for the weekend is 53 degrees.

I am going to take a wait and see approach to the weekend. β›Ί As I noted last night I don’t want to go out to Schoharie with all the mud, rough roads and car washes closed but I’ll decide later on about the Southern Adirondacks if it looks very nice. Next weekend might be even better. I would like to go fishing but not in the crowds. 🎣

Likewise I’m going to hold off calling the shop 🚘 about the alignment on the truck. It should get done to preserve the tires ⚫ and I should have done it a long time ago but so he it. I’ll decide tomorrow, I think they’re open but you know I always am trying to social distance more as people say.

As previously noted, next Tuesday is 7:30 PM Sunset πŸŒ‡ when the sun will be setting at 7:28 pm with dusk at 7:57 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 68 and 34 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 55 degrees. We hit a record high of 87 back in 2010.

NY 22 Turns

March 27, 2020 Night

Good evening! Clear and 44 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a northwest breeze at 5 mph. πŸƒ I’m sitting out back and it’s a pretty nice starry ✨ evening but it’s getting cold quickly. Temperatures will drop below around 2 am. β˜ƒοΈ

So it was a pretty nice day for a work day. β˜€ Hard to argue against working from home when the sun is shining. That said, everything is so up in the air these days, I miss the old days. I spent a few hours at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center working on some stuff on the internet and uploading some new content to the blog and then I went for a walk up Bennett Hill. 🚢 Some people are a little annoyed but most are friendly when I step way back for social distancing on the trail. You hear how bad Coronavirus can be for some one even my age, and I really want to avoid it as long as possible πŸ™† but I’m also not going to lock myself in my moldy nasty apartment when there is fresh air outside to breathe in away from others. Sat out back for a while after my evening walk. πŸŒƒ Read for a while under the bright πŸ”† 100 watt bulb out back. Lots of stars tonight and the moon is pretty.

Tonight will be mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 29 degrees at 4am. One degree below normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 26th. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 33 degrees. The record low of 3 occurred back in 1923.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent πŸŒ’ Moon with 12% illuminated. At 10 PM, the moon was in the west-northwest (284Β°) at an altitude of 6Β° from the horizon, some 248,314 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. πŸš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by October 2nd. Buckle up for safety! πŸ’Ί The Pink 🌸 Moon is on Tuesday, April 7. The darkest hour is at 1:01 am, followed by dawn at 6:18 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:46 am in the east (86Β°) and last for 2 minutes and 54 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 45 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 7:24 am with sun in the east (92Β°). Tonight will have 11 hours and 27 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 53 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of rain, mainly after 4pm. πŸ’¦Increasing clouds β›…, with a high of 53 degrees at 4pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 3rd. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 55 degrees. The record high of 85 was set in 1945. 14.2 inches of snow fell back in 1932.❄

I am thinking about an early morning walk 🚢 at Schodack Island State Park and then swinging by the office to pick up the laptop and return the broken network adapter πŸ”Œ then get the box of files πŸ“‚ for the Reszin Adam’s documentary from John Wolcott that I’m working Cynthia Pooler on. I’ve been listening to her Focus on Albany podcast lately, it’s really good. I’m not going to really visit much with John though – he’s pretty frail so his doctor 😷 is recommending a very strict isolated for him. It’s understandable – if he gets the bug he’s not likely to survive.

I haven’t really decided if I will visit my parents this weekend. πŸ‘ͺ It would be nice to join them for Sunday dinner but probably safer if I stayed away. Hopefully only a few more weeks before the risk drops significantly with the warming weather and the peak of the virus infecting all the easy targets. Plus I’ve gotten the allegeries bothering me again. Maybe from mold from cleaning the bathroom 🚽 although lately I think it’s something outside that’s been irritating my nose πŸ‘ƒ and throat. Been flaring up and then going away for two weeks now, although Claradin D helps a lot.

I’ve been studying the numbers πŸ”’ and the curve compared to where it is and despite rising there seems to some leveling off with Coronavirus at least in Upstate NY. I am hopeful that we can reach the peak relatively soon, herd immunity will build up and life can return to normal. πŸ“Š That said, the news πŸ“° is going to get devastatingly bad over the next few weeks, we all are expected to loose at least a few loved ones and friends from Coronavirus but hopefully not too many people. Projections aren’t reality and expodential curves can and do bend by breaking chains πŸ”— of transmission but it’s still a disaster. And that doesn’t even include the chaos in all other parts of the economy or how our civil society is falling apart and corruption is surging at all levels of government all thanks to an opportunistic strain of RNA that’s hijacking the bodies of humans across the world.

In four weeks on April 24 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (289Β°) at 7:48 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 31 minutes and 54 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly cloudy and temperatures between 61 and 42 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 62 and 40 degrees. The record high of 81 degrees was set back in 2001.

Looking ahead, Good Friday ✝️ is in 2 weeks, Arbor Day 🌳 is a month away, May πŸ•Š is in 5 weeks and 8:30 PM Sunset ️⛱️ is in 10 weeks.

Snake Mountain

March 27, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Two weeks to Good Friday ✝️. I am thinking of I get Good Friday off that would be nice to tack another day on the weekend for you road / camping trip. β›Ί I normally socially distance when I travel and camp as I like having big fires πŸ”₯ , listening to music 🎢 and shooting guns πŸ”« and I can wear gloves when I pump gas. β›½ Trust me, you know my preferred music type, you want to social distance me.

Partly cloudy and 45 degrees in Delmar, NY. β›… There is a north-northwest breeze at 8 mph. πŸƒ. Incredibly beautiful morning. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow 2 am. β˜ƒοΈ

Such a nice morning. 😎 Too bad it’s a work day and while I’m not stuck in an office I am sure projects will be coming my way so I can’t get too far from my phone πŸ“± and laptop. I am actually getting a work laptop for official duties which is good because I am not a big fan of using my personal laptop as I don’t like mixing work and personal stuff. I certainly don’t want to use a work VPN on my personal computer for obvious reasons. πŸ’»

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 58 degrees at 3pm. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 14th. Northwest wind around 8 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 50 degrees. The record high of 78 was set in 1998. 6.7 inches of snow fell back in 1959.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 1:01 pm with sun having an altitude of 50.2Β° from the due south horizon (-20.6Β° vs. 6/21). First above fifty degrees in the sky – that should lead to some nice warm spring days. A six foot person will cast a 5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 6:39 pm with the sun in the west (269Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west (275Β°) starting at 7:13 pm and lasts for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:44 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent πŸŒ’ Moon in the west (261Β°) at an altitude of 30Β° from the horizon, 248,511 miles away. πŸš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:18 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies πŸŒ„ and temperatures around 50 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 31 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 29 degrees at 6am. One degree below normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 26th. I’m surprised the average low is now thirty – true sign that spring is coming. 🌸 Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 33 degrees. The record low of 3 occurred back in 1923.

Tomorrow will rain likely, mainly after 5pm. Increasing clouds β›… , with a high of 54 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 5th. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 55 degrees. The record high of 85 was set in 1945. 14.2 inches of snow fell back in 1932.❄

Looking ahead to Sunday, rain before 8am, then showers likely, mainly after 11am. πŸ’¦ High near 51. Southeast wind 8 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Typical average high for the weekend is 50 degrees.

I seriously thought about heading out of town this weekend β›Ί but I think Saturday will be quite cloudy ☁and I would be taking down camp in the cold rain. Plus I really should work to save money – between car insurance and rent I have $1,100 leaving my bank account today,πŸ’Έ although fortunately next Tuesday is a pay day.πŸ’° That said, I owe New York State over $300 in two weeks πŸ’΅ between the quarterly tax payment and the usual credit card bill, as I rarely use cash πŸ’³.

That said, maybe next weekend. πŸ’ The long range looks very good for Friday through Sunday, a week from now β›Ί and trout season 🎣 will be open. Question is how busy I’ll be during those days. Not sure, but if it’s relatively quiet around the office 🏒, we’ll home office I could take next Friday off.

But as previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Good Friday ✝️ when the sun will be setting at 7:32 pm with dusk at 8:01 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 50 and 32 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 56 degrees. That might also be a good weekend to camp β›Ί. We hit a record high of 86 back in 1922.

Good evening! Clear and 31 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌌 There is a north breeze at 6 mph. πŸƒ. Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 11 am. 🌑️ Beautiful day followed by a nice evening walk, although one filled with much concern as the Coronavirus crisis deepen.

Had a nice hike up Bennett Hill but it was crowded. πŸ‘ͺ 14 cars in the parking πŸ…Ώ area, a lot of bored families looking for something to do with all activities and events canceled. β›” I had a nice Saint Patrick’s Day dinner with the folks πŸ€and went for my evening walk. Started out the day at the Albany Pine Bush Preserve.

At one level the media hysteria is well overblown πŸ“Ί but all the evidence points to the virus πŸ‘Ύburning through the human population, taking a great deal of the sick and elderly πŸ‘΄ with it. I’ve been skeptical about the efforts to slow the rampaging virus down by shutting down most of the societal institutions but truth be told, it rather frightening. Regardless it’s kind of frightening times and things might be very different when it’s all over.

In four weeks on April 12 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (283Β°) at 7:34 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 32 minutes and 6 seconds later then tonight. Out for a walk this morning in the Pine Bush 🚢 and hope to meet some people later in the day. Really pretty morning, so much blue sky. 🌲🌲🌲Maybe later go to Thacher Park or maybe just Bennett Hill depending on the weather.

Today in 44 BC, Julius Caesar, Dictator of the Roman Republic, is stabbed to death by Marcus Junius Brutus, Gaius Cassius Longinus, Decimus Junius Brutus, and several other Roman senators on the Ides of March. Plus don’t forget that song Vehicle by the Ides of March. Good song for friendly stranger in black sedans. πŸš™ Nowadays they’d probably be SUVs with big speakers.

I wasn’t so freaked out about the media crap over Coronavirus 😷 but increasingly I am concerned after hearing about it on the Skeptics Guide to the Universe 🌌. The truth is that there ain’t a lot to do besides wash one’s hands πŸ‘ good and pray πŸ™. Social distancing might help but I’m skeptical – how much time ⌚ will it buy? Is it worth the high economic and social costs? I guess only time will tell. The whole situation is both abursd and kind of frightening. πŸ‘Ύ
