May 21, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Next Friday is Memorial Day Weekend Starts ๐Ÿ•๏ธ . Not sure what my plans are for next weekend. I just want to avoid the crowds, mud and black flies if possible. Sounds like I’ve made a decision. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Partly cloudy and 62 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 47 degrees.

I thought about going to the office today ๐Ÿข but I will properly work from home ๐Ÿก. It’s a nice morning and while I expect it to get warm later, I have the fan and I can drink lots of water. ๐Ÿฅ› I expect I will be working a lot more in the office come summer so why rush back on days I need not be there? ๐ŸŒธ Those lillac bushes and pollen are pretty intense.

By working from home today, ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป I am able to go for my morning walk and enjoy some fresh air before it gets warm. ๐ŸŒž That said the dew point is expected to remain pretty low so it should feel nice most of the day. ๐Ÿ’ป

My laptop is charging so I can work out back for at least a while until the battery gets low. I expect a busy day as my Fridays always are regardless if I’m working from home, the office, Lake Pleasant or the wilderness. ๐Ÿ“ถ It’s just the internet and server are a little faster in the office and I don’t have to watch the bandwidth there.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 85 degrees at 3pm. 12 degrees above normal. the dew point is going to remain low Maximum dew point of 55 at 2pm. Not really muggy. South wind around 6 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 78 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1941. There was a dusting of snow in 1895.โ„

I also have a one o’clock meeting which I can probably do from home today, ๐Ÿ“น and then at 4 PM I have my counseling session. Between all the other work projects that are on the agenda for the day. I fully expect that after my counseling session I will get back to work from home continuing to review various things for work. ๐Ÿ’ผ But alas I am working from home, so I can do it out back if it’s nice. ๐Ÿ˜€

I am thinking this might be the last counseling session for now — after four sessions — I am re-evaluating the benefits of more counseling after being $100 and 4 hours in the hole. ๐Ÿ•ณ Yes, it got me to call the landlord and fix long-standing issues in my apartment, improving my sleep and helping me keep things better in context — but I am not sure if I am ready to continue on or if I would be just be better to read a book or watch a Youtube video. ๐Ÿ“บ Most of the things I’ve already heard I’ve already learned. Plus I’m pretty successful professionally, my investments have done well, and I am generally happy with the way things going, and even if I am a bit of a pyromaniac ๐Ÿ”ฅ and a wanna-be go-ol country boy, ๐Ÿค  it’s not something to be ashamed of, as I’m told. Plus I don’t think I can do in two weeks, because of being too busy with work.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 67.6° from the due south horizon (-3.2° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:36 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (292°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (299°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:18 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 18 seconds with dusk around 8:50 pm, which is 58 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the south (172°) at an altitude of 51° from the horizon, 230,482 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:32 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 79 degrees. The dew point will be 58 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 49 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 48 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 63 degrees at 6am. 13 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 59 at 12am. South wind around 5 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2020, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 55 degrees. The record low of 33 occurred back in 2002.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers between 11am and 2pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 85 degrees at 2pm. 12 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 59 at 12pm. Light and variable wind becoming west 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1911.

I am going to my niece’s birthday party tomorrow ๐ŸŽ‚ and maybe fishing down by the river later in the evening. ๐ŸŽฃ I thought about heading out of town — it’s going to be warm but I am not convinced, Saturday is going to be real nice.

Looking ahead to Sunday, a slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 84. Northwest wind 7 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 63 at 8am. Typical average high for the weekend is 73 degrees.

Sunday I might go kayaking or hiking, I am a bit undecided on that point. Probably just some places in Partridge Run ๐Ÿฆ or some other place nearby. Going to be a hot day, with a decent amount of humidity.

As previously noted, next Friday Memorial Day Weekend Starts ๐Ÿ•๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 8:23 pm with dusk at 8:57 pm. Memorial Day is late this year. On that day in 2020, we had hot and humid weather, with times of sun and clouds with temperatures between 83 and 68 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 75 degrees. We hit a record high of 93 back in 2016.

May 20, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Just waiting for the bus ๐Ÿš to take me downtown on this direct drive of the week. Five weeks to Strawberry Moon ๐ŸŒ• . Partly sunny and 62 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 49 degrees.

So alas the routine returns, ๐Ÿšcatching the bus downtown, saying hi to the bus driver ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป and off we go. Yesterday was an extremely ordinary day working downtown, almost like before the pandemic but with the muzzle on the bus. ๐Ÿ˜ท Even packed on the elevator at the end of the day, and yesterday the morning I got on the elevator with a bunch of likely anti-vax Republican staffers. It seems like the evidence is pretty good that the vaccine works well so I’m not concerned. ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 84 degrees at 4pm. 11 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 51 at 11am. South wind 5 to 7 mph. Going to be a warm one but not with much humidity. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 75 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1962.

Don’t get me wrong, but I’d rather be working aside Lake Pleasant on Spectulator ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ผ but alas I’m working in the old office ๐Ÿข downtown. But one thing I’ve realized is how slow ๐Ÿข the VPN and the internet more generally is over the Hotspot and library Wi-Fi especially in Spectulator compared to the real office. High speed internet in the Adirondacks is anything but high speed. That said it’s pretty neat how I can retrieve a file off the server five miles away from the nearest electric wire. Plus it’s great to see all my colleagues. ๐Ÿ‘ฅ Something is lost over the Zoom.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 67.4ยฐ from the due south horizon (-3.4ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:35 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (292ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (299ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:17 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 18 seconds with dusk around 8:48 pm, which is one minute later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the south-southwest (192ยฐ) at an altitude of 56ยฐ from the horizon, 232,873 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:31 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 75 degrees. The dew point will be 51 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 48 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 53 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 55 degrees at 6am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 6th. Maximum dew point of 51 at 6pm. South wind 5 to 7 mph. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 46 degrees. The record low of 32 occurred back in 1949.

Sunday looks to be the best of the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 84. West wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 61 at 11am. Sunday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 84. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 63 at 8am. Typical average high for the weekend is 73 degrees.

I think it will be a stay at home weekend ๐ŸŽฃ but it might be a good weekend for fishing down at the river and maybe kayaking ๐Ÿ›ถ at Partridge Run, keeping an eye ๐Ÿ‘โ€๐Ÿ—จ out for thunderstorms โ›ˆ. Not sure if I have any plans yet for Memorial Day Weekend. โ›บ That could be myself lying to me. ๐Ÿคฅ

Looking ahead, there are 5 weeks until Latest Sunset ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm with dusk at 9:12 pm. On that day in 2020, we had humid, partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 85 and 65 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1943.

May 19, 2021 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. Pandemic is over, back to working downtown although I’d be all for working from next to Lake Pleasant ๐Ÿ—ป but that’s not to be. Next Wednesday is Flower Moon ๐ŸŒ• . Sunny and 61 degrees at the bus stop ๐Ÿš next to the Valero. ๐ŸŒž There is a north-northwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 50 degrees.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 86 degrees at 4pm. 14 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 50 at 8am. North wind around 6 mph. About a perfect spring day without a drop of humidity. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 70 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1989. There was a dusting of snow in 1976.โ„

There is the old saying, the more things change, the more they stay the same. ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ผ It seemed like for a while that everything changed but now is going back closer to normal. It was a fun year for sure and it will be nice to see my colleagues but working at a desk downtown isn’t like working next to Lake Pleasant. ๐Ÿ’ปAt least in the office I won’t have to watch the bandwidth constantly or worry about the state of charge of batteries. ๐Ÿ”‹

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 67.2ยฐ from the due south horizon (-3.6ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:35 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (292ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (299ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:16 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 17 seconds with dusk around 8:47 pm, which is one minute later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the southwest (215ยฐ) at an altitude of 58ยฐ from the horizon, 235,596 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:30 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 76 degrees. The dew point will be 52 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and 46 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 54 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 57 degrees at 5am. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 12th. Maximum dew point of 55 at 10pm. Calm wind. In 2020, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 45 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 2002.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 81. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 62 at 1pm. Sunday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 81. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 62 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 73 degrees.

I am leaning towards staying in town this weekend. ๐Ÿก There is plenty of summer left and I’m waiting for hot weather and days down at the Potholers. ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ I am so happy that Piseco-Powley Road is going to be open this summer and things will be back to normal.

As previously noted, next Wednesday is Flower Moon ๐ŸŒ• when the sun will be setting at 8:21 pm with dusk at 8:55 pm. On that day in 2020, we had hot weather which was mostly sunny and temperatures between 90 and 64 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 74 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 2010.

Along the Channel

May 18, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Back hike again, getting ready to work in the office tomorrow ๐Ÿข after one more day of work from home. Two weeks to 9 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† . Partly cloudy and 53 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… Calm wind. The dew point is 47 degrees.

Back home from the Adirondacks as of last night. ๐Ÿก I probably could have stayed another day but Wednesday is a session day and I have to dress up and didn’t want to come home late and then have to get up early and get all dressed for work the next day. ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿซ Tomorrow morning at this time I’ll be getting ready to go and get on the bus. ๐ŸšŒ Need to figure out which bus makes the most sense to catch downtown – they still have the pandemic schedule. ๐Ÿ˜ท Still have to wear a mask on the bus ๐Ÿš and elevators at work but at the desk it’s not necessary especially now that most folks are vaccinated.

Most of yesterday was working down in Spectulator, ๐Ÿ’ป first from the library ๐Ÿ“š and then down by the lake in the afternoon. It wasn’t a bad day although around 4:45 pm it started to rain and I had to hurry back to my truck. โ˜” At Five I started home but stopped at Auger Falls, hiked down Old Route 8A, a snowmobile trail that follows the pre-1968 alignment of NY 8-30 past Auger Falls and then down to the falls. The old road and bridges have been completely removed but the original road cut is quite visible. Seems wider than Old Route 8B but I don’t think it is. Some pretty serious iron rust below the modern alignment – I don’t think it’s acid mine discharge but it sure was bloody red. Acid mine discharge as seen in Pennsylvania is very orange colored.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 78 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 9th. Maximum dew point of 50 at 9am. Light and variable wind becoming northwest 6 to 11 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph. With the breeze, won’t feel so warm. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 69 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 2017. 2.2 inches of snow fell back in 2002.โ„

Busy day ahead. I want to do my morning walk i๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป and vote in the school election. ๐Ÿšธ Then I need to get down to work and edit that paper I have on my desk. ๐Ÿ“„ Then at lunch time I want to wash my truck ๐Ÿšฟ and be home by 1 pm for a work meeting. I told my folks I’d be out later for dinner after work as next weekend I may be out of town. โšก That said, maybe not the forecast is trending downhill. ๐Ÿ˜”

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 67ยฐ from the due south horizon (-3.8ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:34 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (291ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (298ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:14 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 16 seconds with dusk around 8:46 pm, which is one minute and one second later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the west-southwest (237ยฐ) at an altitude of 56ยฐ from the horizon, 238,511 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:28 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 71 degrees. The dew point will be 46 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 44 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 57 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 54 degrees at 5am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 2nd. Maximum dew point of 47 at 9pm. West wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2020, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 52 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1981.

Sunny and mild with a chance of showers this weekend before Memorial Day Weekend. ๐ŸŒžSaturday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 58 at 11am. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 79. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 58 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 73 degrees.

While I have my therapy session on Friday again ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€โš•๏ธI am not sure if after that I will head out of town. But seems like the forecast is trending wetter โ›ˆ๏ธ and I just got back from the Adirondacks. If I were to go anywhere this weekend I’d be would either be Madison or Schoharie County in Central NY. Schoharie might be good in a couple of weeks once the strawberries ๐Ÿ“ are out or come the first weekend of summer the Mine Kill Pool. ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ No muzzles this year and the pool has been rebuilt with a new pump.

I don’t anticipate doing much more time up in Spectulator, โ›บ mainly because I’ve been there a lot this past year and as remote work ๐Ÿ’ป inevitably winds down there will be less opportunities to work up at Lake Pleasant or nearby areas with cell service. ๐Ÿ“ถ With Piseco Powley Road open again the Potholers will probably be my go to in the summer months. ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

It’s possible the next time I head out of town is Memorial Day Weekend ๐Ÿ—ป but I’m really loathed to go to the Adirondacks that weekend with the crowds and black flies. Could I remote work that Friday somewhere I have cell service? Yes. Will I don’t know. Forest Road 71 in the Green Mountains is a possibility. Or maybe I’ll stay home that weekend. Going to probably need to work a few hours that weekend so I’ll need cell service. Maybe that means back to Spectulator but I’m loathed to do that again.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until 9 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 8:26 pm. On that day in 2020, we had partly cloudy skies with rain showers and temperatures between 68 and 41 degrees. Kind of a cool and wet day. Typically, the high temperature is 76 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 1918.

Stoney Creek South

May 17, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Pack Rat Day ๐Ÿ€! It’s hard to argue with Texas ranchers with their burn pits. Pile it up and light a match. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Backfill the dead pit hole with dirt. ๐Ÿšœ Kind of like they do in the city without the fancy liners and shit. Remember Texas is nearly six times the size of New York, you can get away with shit out there unthinkable back east. Two weeks to Memorial Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ . That officially is the kick off to summer. I think I will stay out of the Adirondacks that weekend because I don’t like crowds or black flies. I had my fill this weekend. Mostly sunny and 50 degrees at the Mason Lake. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Calm wind. But so far that black flies ๐Ÿœ haven’t awoken but they are coming. ๐Ÿ™„

Yesterday, I hiked Watch Hill (again) ๐Ÿƒ then walked around Lewey Lake Campground ๐Ÿฆ studying the birds, and taking some pictures of scenery. ๐Ÿ–ผ Still not sure what the hiking trails listed on the signs are from Lewey Lake are — I have some on my map, but I couldn’t find them. But I tell you they pack those campsites in. I drove down to Mason Lake, and while I didn’t get a campsite right on the lake like I had hoped, ๐Ÿ• I did find a campsite that I didn’t visit at all last year, and it was nice smaller site. The smaller sites are easier to light. The black flies were super bad all around Perkins Clearing, ๐Ÿœ but once I had the screen tent set up and I could hide out in there to dusk, it was bearable. ๐Ÿ“— Did some reading and scrolling through the phone for a while ๐Ÿ“ฑ before doing a brief walk down to Mason Lake, which was about 3/4 mile down from the road where I camped. Virtually nobody up at Watch Hill, I passed a small group hiking up the mountain but after that I didn’t see a single other person. ๐Ÿ—ป I didn’t dilly dally too much on Watch Hill as I heard some thunder and it looked like rain to south ๐ŸŒฉ but it tuned out to be nothing more then a handful of rain dops.

Taking down camp โ›บ and getting ready to head to Spectulator. I have a busy day ahead so I want to be there by nine ๐Ÿ•˜. I also want things taken down before the black flies are out in force. Made some eggs ๐Ÿฅš and laying back in the hammock for a few minutes before I start on south. A pretty nice day, alas a work day so I’ll probably be spending most of the day at the Lake Pleasant Wi-Fi, but at least I won’t have to worry about having enough energy to keep everything charged. ๐Ÿ˜Ž But alas, this evening after work I’m heading back home. I am running a bit low on supplies, and I want to work from home tomorrow so I can get ready for working in office come Wednesday. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ’ผ Pretty drive though down to Spectulator this morning.

Today will have a slight chance of showers after 1pm. Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 69 degrees at 1pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 9th. But then again, we are comparing Speculator weather to Albany climate normals, and that’s not a perfect mix as it’s colder in mountains. Calm wind becoming southwest around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies. The high last year was 74 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 2017.

The agenda today is pretty much work, ๐Ÿ’ป although I hope at lunch time to have an hour to go for a walk along the Sacandaga River and maybe sit down by Lake Pleasant. At 5 PM or so I’ll head home and get unpacked. Maybe a make a few stops along away to toss in a fishing line. ๐ŸŽฃ J do like fishing below the dam in Wells, although with the warm weather they probably will have ramped the hydro dam up and the trout are probably hiding in deep due to the heat.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:55 pm with sun having an altitude of 65.8° from the due south horizon (-4° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:37 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (291°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (298°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:19 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 20 seconds with dusk around 8:51 pm, which is one minute and 3 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the west-southwest (254°) at an altitude of 49° from the horizon, 241,453 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:34 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 60 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and 48 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 3 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ , with a low of 47 degrees at 3am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 13th. Calm wind. In 2020, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 54 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1981.

This weekend will give us a hint of summer. ๐Ÿ– But not really muggy. Saturday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 77. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 57 at 8am. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 78. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 56 at 8am. Typical average high for the weekend is 73 degrees. I’m considering Madison County, where there won’t be black flies, but two weekend in a row traveling can be a bit tired. I am not sure.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Memorial Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ when the sun will be setting at 8:31 pm with dusk at 9:06 pm. ๐ŸŒบ Aren’t you looking forward to the unofficial kick-off for summer, although we get will get a taste of that this week. On that day in 2020, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 65 and 46 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 75 degrees. We hit a record high of 92 back in 2013.

Purple on Red

May 16, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. โ›ช Nice morning and so far the black flies aren’t out in mass yet. ๐Ÿœ Four weeks to Fathers Day ๐Ÿ‘จ . Mostly sunny and 51 degrees in Speculator, NY. Light breeze from the west.

Yesterday I did a 3 mile hike along a bunch of dirt roads at Spectulator Tree Farm. ๐ŸŒฒI plan to upload those photos from my other camera ๐Ÿ“ธ later on probably after also hiking Watch Hill today. Lots of birds and wildlife and some nice quiet views. ๐Ÿฆ I liked hiking for hours without seeing anyone, the breeze kept the black flies away ๐Ÿœ and the mix of timberland and woods meant there was much to see. Came back to camp, made up a big bowl of macaroni and cheese ๐Ÿง€ with corn ๐ŸŒฝ and ham. Good dinner after a nice day, had a fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ and watched the stars โœจ. Got a bit sunburnt and are a bit achy last night ๐Ÿค• but I figure that’s just summer coming on or skin cancer.

Today will have a slight chance of showers between noon and 2pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. โšก Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 65 degrees at 1pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 28th. Calm wind becoming west around 6 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 73 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1991.

My plan is to get a fairly early start – after my breakfast of eggs and coffee โ˜• take down camp and head into town for ice. I haven’t turned my truck on since Thursday evening ๐Ÿ”‹ but I know the starting battery is fully charged as the solar has done well, especially yesterday with the bright ๐Ÿ”† sunshine.

I want to do a hike up Watch Hill ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป before the thunderstorms โ›ˆ hit later. I don’t want tbe to be hiking in a thunderstorm especially with my quite worn boots ๐Ÿ‘ข that no longer have good traction in the rain. I’m going to order a new pair on Monday along with some jeans ๐Ÿ‘–. I need more clothes now that starting next week I’ll be working downtown a few days a week.

I thought about other hikes ๐Ÿ—ป but I like Watch Hill and I’m not expecting too many crowds off season but it should be pretty with everything greening up nicely. Easy hike, I should be off it by afternoon when the thunderstorms roll in. I like sitting down by the lake. ๐Ÿฆ I’ll keep my eyes out for birds and wildlife.

Then camp off by Mason Lake tonight โ›บ and head back to town to work in Spectulator in the morning and head home thereafter. Technically, I don’t have to be in the office until Wednesday but I want a day home to unpack ๐Ÿ’ผ and plus I would rather do the Zoom Meetings from the library Wi-Fi than my phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ as it looks bad to be zooming from camp when other colleagues are in the downtown office. Hybrid for now. It will be nice to see some of my colleagues in the office, ๐Ÿข especially the ones I’ve Zoomed with mostly lately.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:55 pm with sun having an altitude of 65.7ยฐ from the due south horizon (-4.3ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:35 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (291ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (298ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:17 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 19 seconds with dusk around 8:49 pm, which is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the west (266ยฐ) at an altitude of 41ยฐ from the horizon, 244,296 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:32 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 57 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and 45 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 6 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 7pm, then a slight chance of showers between 7pm and 9pm. Partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 43 degrees at 5am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 2nd. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 54 degrees. The record low of 30 occurred back in 1959.

Should be a decent evening. ๐ŸŒƒ I could stay until Tuesday but I think Monday night makes the most sense. Work from my actual apartment on Tuesday and get my suit ready for Wednesday. ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿซ The good thing had to end with the pandemic ending and I kind of look forward to my own time on the bus ๐Ÿš. Plus it gets hot especially working from home without air conditioning. I’m just glad that the vaccine is so effective ๐Ÿ’‰ and they repaired Piseco-Powley Road, ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ meaning easy trips to the Potholers and the Mine Kill Pool will be open once again.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Fathers Day ๐Ÿ‘จ when the sun will be setting at 8:39 pm with dusk at 9:14 pm. On that day in 2020, we had a pretty cool but partly sunny day with temperatures between 66 and 46 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 79 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 1892.

High Point

May 15, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Saturday. It’s the weekend! No work today for me. โ˜บ Five weeks to Average High is 80 ๐Ÿ– . Mostly sunny and 50 degrees in Speculator, NY. There is a west breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

I checked and it looks like Mason Lake Road is open ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป but after checking the ice and thinking about it some more I decided to camp one more day off NY 8B and then head up on Sunday when more camping options are open. ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป I’m thinking I’ll hike Watch Hill on Sunday and today I want to do some birding ๐Ÿฆ on Upper Robb Creek Road based on a friend’s recommendation.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 68 degrees at 4pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 6th. West wind 6 to 9 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 84 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1900.

Should be a real nice day, but I’m hoping for a breeze ๐Ÿƒ to keep the black flies in check. ๐Ÿœ Yesterday wasn’t so bad as there was a a steady breeze for most of the day. Of course I wasn’t happy that the wind blew the tent away ๐ŸŽช, sending no only the tent 100 ft up and away but also smashing my new lantern ๐Ÿฎ and ripping out all the tent stakes. Fortunately the screen tent wasn’t damaged. It happened so quickly while I was working on my laptop ๐Ÿ–ฅ doing work from the hammock. We got this pop up rain shower โ˜” and it wasn’t a big deal except for a crazy strong gust after the storm ended. I have the plugged lantern which I will part out for repairs when I get home. ๐Ÿก
