Good evening! Cloudy and 60 degrees in Delmar. โ˜ Calm wind. The dew point is 52 degrees. The skies will clear Monday around 1 am.

Things got messed up today.๐Ÿ˜ฃ After riding the exercise bike for a while I was doing some work putting in the proper transistor on the light above my bed ๐Ÿ’ก and I accidentally had a solder bridge and I sent 12 volts somewhere I shouldn’t and had some smoke and I burned up a hc-05 Bluetooth adapter. Fixing the mess I made took all afternoon and I never got things working right. ๐Ÿ”ฅ I ended up reading ๐Ÿ“– for a few hours this basically kids book about myths about wildlife and nature. But it still was interesting.

But I don’t think it matter that much, the weather wasn’t that nice yesterday. โ˜ I don’t think I missed much. If I can’t get those HC-05 modules to talk to each other I can always just get some more, they’re inexpensive. I’ll figure it out.๐Ÿ‘

Tonight will have isolated showers before midnight, then a chance of rain, mainly after 3am. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 51 degrees at 5am. Seven degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around May 27th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 9pm. Light north wind. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had thunderstorm in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 50 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1974.

While not a terrible evening I skipped my evening walk ๐Ÿšถ because it got late early. And I was just tired ๐Ÿ˜ด and dirty because I didn’t bother with a shower ๐Ÿšฟ. I probably could have gone for a walk but five minutes after it got nice it got yucky again. Plus I did ride the bike for an hour in the morning and I was kind of into reading the book ๐Ÿ“– that I had gotten out of the library on wildlife myths.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent Moon ๐ŸŒ’ with 1% illuminated. The moon will rise at 6:29 am. The First Quarter Moon is on Friday night with mostly cloudy skies. Tomorrow will have a chance of rain. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 62 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around April 24th. Maximum dew point of 49 at 1pm. North wind around 5 mph becoming east in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny in the morning, which became partly cloudy by afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 76 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1944. There was a dusting of snow in 1900.โ„

Doesn’t sound like tomorrow is going to particularly nice either. ๐Ÿ’ญ I’ll probably get to the grocery store ๐Ÿฌ early in the morning and then do a few things around the apartment before going out to the folks house for dinner.

I am hopeful for better weather next weekend. โ›บ If the weather improves I may head up to Pisceo Powley Road, the southern part open in the spring time. Then do a day trip Saturday to Little Falls. I could change my mind but it would be fun to see that area in early spring.

In four weeks on June 1 the sun will be setting at 8:26 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 27 minutes and 35 seconds later then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had hot and humid weather, mostly cloudy skies , rain showers and temperatures between 84 and 69 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 74 and 52 degrees. Not a particularly nice weekend for sure. ๐Ÿ˜” But summer is still approaching and I’m somewhat hopeful of getting out next weekend, possibly to the lower portion of Piseco-Powley Road and then down to Moss Island. The following weekend is the Lupine Festival and then Memorial Day Weekend for which if the weather is decent I’m leaning towards the East Branch Sacandaga again. But for this weekend I’ve made no real plans.

I had kind of booked this weekend to see my aunt but she wasn’t feeling well so she didn’t come to town. ๐Ÿ‘ชBut I do want to replace the transistor on the light over my bed with the proper type of transistor for more light and less waste. It’s a simple soldering job but I have to pull the light down. ๐Ÿ”ฌ Maybe do some reading ๐Ÿ“– too.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Flower Moon ๐ŸŒ• when the sun will be setting at 8:14 pm with dusk at 8:46 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 73 and 51 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 70 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 2017.

I got home, had dinner and rode the exercise bike for a while ๐Ÿšฒ, almost an hour and a half. I rode while listening to Marketplace through my laptop and the radio adapter, then I watched a YouTube video I had downloaded on orienteering with a compass. For a lot of people that’s quaint with cellphone GPS ๐ŸŒ but I know most of the time I’m in the woods I use paper maps and just use visible landmarks to orient myself although sometimes I’ll use the compass but that’s rare. I went for my evening walk ๐Ÿšถ and it started to rain ๐Ÿ’ฆwhich meant I got wet on my way home. Then I retired to bed and read ๐Ÿ“– for a while. I’m tired ๐Ÿ˜ด and going to sleep shortly.

Looking Towards the Rapp Road Landfill

May 2, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 56 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a southeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 49 degrees. Nice fairly mild evening. A bit foggy ๐ŸŒ from the moisture in the air tonight. The skies will clear Sunday around 11 pm.

I went for my evening walk ๐ŸŒƒ. They had a game wrapping up at the high school ๐Ÿšธ so the lights were still on at the field. Bought milk and ice cream ๐Ÿฆ at the store, the $2.99 Stewart’s sale is ongoing. I rarely eat ice cream anymore but a sweet is good for a change. They are really aggressively promoting their ice cream sale this time.

I rode the exercise bike for a while ๐Ÿšฒ then worked on some code for the VMS which got slowed down debugging a buffer overflow. I’ve continued playing with the new GIMP which I like a lot. Also been playing with some energy data. I should do some reading ๐Ÿ“– but I really prefer to do that at the park.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 48 degrees at 5am. Five degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around May 18th. Southeast wind around 7 mph. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 63 degrees at 2pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around April 27th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 3pm. South wind 8 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 2001. There was a dusting of snow in 1986.โ„

Maximum dew point of 48 at 12pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 66 degrees. Not sure of my plans for the weekend now that my Aunt isn’t coming up this weekend. Good evening! Cloudy and 52 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a south-southeast breeze at 11 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 42 degrees. The skies will clear Monday around noontime.

I was bad, I did not go for my evening walk tonight. ๐Ÿšถ I did ride the exercise bike for a while ๐Ÿšฒ but then I got started working on some code and watching some YouTube videos. I installed the new version of the GIMP image editor, GIMP 2.10 and are very impressed with the features. I really like the single window optional interface, ๐ŸŽจ much less clunky than the seperate windows that always overlap one and another. It’s just a mucj cleaner way to work. This day of age I can’t imagine why anyone would use anything but open source software.

Tonight will have showers likely, mainly between midnight and 2am. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 50 degrees at 1am. Seven degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around May 24th. The high last year was 90 degrees, breaking the previous year record. There was a dusting of snow in 1986.โ„

I started requesting car insurance quotes to see what is out there. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ Information is free to request, it won’t ding your credit score to shop around for insurance. My policy is good through the end of September but I want to learn more about my options. I’m only considering the big insurers with a good reputation. I also think I may be a bit over insured in some areas and under insured in others and I want to study my options to make sure that I have sufficient coverage to protect me and my hard earned savings should I get into a wreck. I’m really not sure if shopping around will save much money – insurance is a very competitive industry – but learning is important. ๐Ÿ’ฌHonestly I’ve not done much research in the past because I figured with so much advertising and competition there probably isn’t a great difference in value.

That said in 2021 when I probably won’t be out in the field much for work I’m seriously thinking of ditching motoring ๐Ÿš™ for a bicycle ๐Ÿšฒ and bus ๐Ÿš pass to get around town. It’s not just the costly insurance, but just the whole motoring experience from dealerships to maintenance. Not having car issues to worry about would be so liberating. It would save so much money๐Ÿ’ธ, improve my health, and reduce my carbon footprint ๐Ÿ‘ฃ dramatically. ๐ŸŒŽ It would be a big change in my lifestyle but it would save money ๐Ÿ’ต getting me closer to being able to buy land in a lower cost state, hobby farm and live off grid.

This year my goal is to save roughly 30%, or $18k of my income towards retirement not including my pension plan. ๐Ÿ’ต 2/3rd pre tax, the rest post tax. Maybe that’s a lot but I’m growing old ๐Ÿ‘ด fast and I want to have a secure retirement plus it’s really cutting down my tax liability as a single renter without college debt. ๐ŸŽ“ I’m also putting away a fair bit in the markets and savings for more near term when I finally decide to make the jump and buy land. The more I can save the less I’ll be wasting today on landfill fodder and the more I can benefit from compound interest. I may never be able to afford all the toys I want but step by step I can get closer to having a secure ๐Ÿ” feature, one with land and a simple home back in the wilderness ๐Ÿก . It does take time though, as even with the record high in the market I’m still a long ways away from where I want to be in 20 years from now.

I decided to rejoin Facebook. ๐Ÿ‘ฅI guess I never fully quit it but I did delete the app from my phone and only checked it a few times a week. I’m not going to get on it as much as I once did but a few times a week I’ll do scheduled posts on my Facebook page. I’ll probably keep Facebook fairly non political going forward. ๐Ÿ‘I’m tired of all the nasty comments. ๐Ÿ’ญ I do think I’ll keep participating in a few of the groups I like such as Casual Peppers and some of the Off Grid groups.

Not a particularly nice weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜ž Saturday, a chance of showers, mainly after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 67. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Maximum dew point of 50 at 12pm. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 60. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Typical average high for the weekend is 66 degrees.

It turns out that my aunt won’t be coming up this weekend because she is under the weather. ๐Ÿ‘ช I am a bit disappointed. But it wouldn’t have been a particularly good weather weekend for her to visit at any rate. Maybe she can come later in the summer when it’s nicer out. I will probably stay home this weekend ๐Ÿก and maybe take a bus to John Wolcott’s house to work on his history project. I also have some electronics building projects I want to do like build the outside temperature probe for my display. ๐Ÿ”ฌ

In four weeks on May 29 the sun will be setting at 8:24 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 28 minutes and 32 seconds later then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had humid weather, mostly sunny and temperatures between 85 and 62 degrees. Definitely a hot day for late May but not unheard of for sure. Typically, you have temperatures between 73 and 51 degrees. The record high of 93 degrees was set back in 1931.

Looking ahead, June ๐Ÿน is a month away, 8:30 PM Sunset ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is in 5 weeks, July ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿฟ is in 2 months, August ๐ŸŒป is in 3 months, Altamont Fair Opens ๐ŸŽก is in 15 weeks, State Fair Opens ๐ŸŽก is in 16 weeks, Sunset Before 7:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 4 months, September 11th ๐Ÿ‡ธ is in 19 weeks, More Night then Day ๐ŸŒŒ is in 21 weeks, October ๐Ÿ›ฅ is in 5 months and Inauguration Day 2021 ๐Ÿ‘ด๐Ÿป is in 90 weeks.

Stoner Pond

April 30, 2019 Night

Good evening! Final post of April 2019. Partly cloudy and 48 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒ‰ Calm wind. Right now you can see the stars a bit ๐ŸŒŸ .The skies will clear Sunday around 9 pm.

I was having problems with the weather templates on the blog ๐Ÿ“‘ so no morning post today. The national weather feed was down which is essential for all my blog templates. But it’s fine I didn’t have much to blog about. I was running ๐Ÿƒ a bit late for the bus ๐Ÿš this morning but I caught it.

The work day was fairly long but uneventful for a change. ๐Ÿ‘”The debate about the organophosphate farm pesticide Lorsban at work was interesting although I could see both sides. ๐Ÿž Sucks for those who depend on it as part of their integrated pest management strategy but I can certainly understand the reasons the feds and the state want to phase it out. ๐Ÿ’จ Ag is a tough business to be in for sure, even worse with climate change bringing in new pests and changing growing conditions to say nothing of all the other pressures.

Bus home was running a bit late ๐Ÿš but I like the driver and he did the best he could do. I made up tuna ๐ŸŸ pasta salad and then went for my evening walk. ๐ŸšถI finally finished off the can of mayonnaise I’ve had forever. Cool for the end of April I’d like to be able to open my windows again. ๐Ÿ‘ƒI noticed my nose was a bit congested again.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 39 degrees at 4am. Four degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical night around April 21st. Light north wind. The sun will rise at 5:50 am with the first light at 5:19 am, which is one minute and 23 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 54 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 30 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers after 9am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 53 degrees at 2pm. 12 degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around April 4th. Calm wind becoming southeast 5 to 8 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny in the morning, which became partly cloudy by afternoon. The high last year was 74 degrees. The record high of 86 was set in 2001. There was a dusting of snow in 1978.โ„

Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 51 at 6am. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 66. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 48 at 11am. In 2018 on that day, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 74 and 53 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 73 and 51 degrees. The record high of 93 degrees was set back in 2016.

Looking ahead, Last Sunset After 8:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 11 weeks, Labor Day Weekend Begins ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ is in 4 months, Constitution Day ๐Ÿ“œ is in 20 weeks, October ๐Ÿ›ฅ is in 22 weeks and Election Day 2020 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 79 weeks.

 Mount Marcy

April 29, 2019 Night

Good evening! Overcast skies and 50 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ Calm wind. The skies will clear Saturday around 7 am.

Not a half bad evening. I’m sitting out back drinking some cold water and apple cider vinegar. ๐Ÿ I had some beer in my truck but I locked it in my attic because I don’t like drinking alcohol anymore ๐Ÿป because it’s expensive and unhealthy. Maybe a beer once and a while at camp but otherwise not. I can’t afford to steal from my future anymore. Life’s too short as it is. I had a nice evening walk after eating se sausages I found in the freezer ๐Ÿฃ which after eating I decided was a bit too greasy for my taste. ๐Ÿšถ

Today was kind of a busy day at work, ๐Ÿ’ผ but the day flew by and I was able to leave at 5:30 and walk down to Rite Aid on North Pearl Street and buy some overpriced contact solution. Two bottles for $13.49 seemed rather pricy compared to what I pay at Walmart but I’m sure Hannaford would be close to that price range and it would have ended up costing more if I drove there. ๐Ÿ‘€ At least I’ll be able to store my contacts properly when the almost empty bottle of contact fluid runs out. ๐Ÿถ

The driver of the big articulated bus this evening ๐Ÿš was so aggressive with the brakes and the horn. ๐Ÿ“ฏ I’m surprised as usually the big articulated bus drivers are the most experienced and best drivers. He also didn’t have his bus block number programmed into the computer so you couldn’t track the arrival of the bus. Maybe he was just having a bad day. I noticed a bus supervisor watching the buses in Delmar so I wonder if they were waiting to talk to him about not entering in the block number on the bus.

I heard this week is $2.99 half gallon ice cream special at Stewart’s for all flavors. ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿง๐Ÿจ I’ve also cut way back on that too but I think it would be fun to get a box of ice cream. I don’t have to eat it all right away. Stewart’s has so many good flavors of ice cream.

Tonight will have showers, mainly after midnight. ๐ŸŒง Low of 43 degrees at 6am. Typical for tonight. Calm wind becoming southeast around 6 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. In 2018, we had light rain in the evening, which became mostly sunny by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 38 degrees. The record low of 25 occurred back in 1874.

Tonight will have a Waning Crescent Moon ๐ŸŒ˜ with 14% illuminated. The moon will rise at 4:16 am. The New Moon is on Friday night with showers. The Flower Moon ๐ŸŒ is on Friday, May 17th. The sun will rise at 5:51 am with the first light at 5:21 am, which is one minute and 24 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 56 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 31 seconds over last night. Nights are definitely getting pretty short at this point. That’s good, especially when it warms up and I can go down to the park after work with a book. ๐Ÿ“™ Reading is good.

Tomorrow will have showers likely, mainly before 11am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 54 degrees at 4pm. 10 degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around April 6th. Southeast wind 5 to 8 mph becoming north in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had light rain.
