Good evening! Overcast skies and 50 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ Calm wind. The skies will clear Saturday around 7 am.

Not a half bad evening. I’m sitting out back drinking some cold water and apple cider vinegar. 🍏 I had some beer in my truck but I locked it in my attic because I don’t like drinking alcohol anymore 🍻 because it’s expensive and unhealthy. Maybe a beer once and a while at camp but otherwise not. I can’t afford to steal from my future anymore. Life’s too short as it is. I had a nice evening walk after eating se sausages I found in the freezer 🍣 which after eating I decided was a bit too greasy for my taste. 🚢

Today was kind of a busy day at work, πŸ’Ό but the day flew by and I was able to leave at 5:30 and walk down to Rite Aid on North Pearl Street and buy some overpriced contact solution. Two bottles for $13.49 seemed rather pricy compared to what I pay at Walmart but I’m sure Hannaford would be close to that price range and it would have ended up costing more if I drove there. πŸ‘€ At least I’ll be able to store my contacts properly when the almost empty bottle of contact fluid runs out. 🍢

The driver of the big articulated bus this evening 🚍 was so aggressive with the brakes and the horn. πŸ“― I’m surprised as usually the big articulated bus drivers are the most experienced and best drivers. He also didn’t have his bus block number programmed into the computer so you couldn’t track the arrival of the bus. Maybe he was just having a bad day. I noticed a bus supervisor watching the buses in Delmar so I wonder if they were waiting to talk to him about not entering in the block number on the bus.

I heard this week is $2.99 half gallon ice cream special at Stewart’s for all flavors. 🍦🍧🍨 I’ve also cut way back on that too but I think it would be fun to get a box of ice cream. I don’t have to eat it all right away. Stewart’s has so many good flavors of ice cream.

 NY 74

April 28, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 44 degrees in Delmar. There is a west-northwest breeze at 9 mph. πŸƒ. I went for my evening walk, it was pretty cool.

After my evening walk I sat back and watched a movie or two, that I had downloaded from the YouTube. πŸŽ₯ I was was watching more of Shaun James My Self Reliance channel and then something about agriculture that I already forgot about.

In all the long weekend was a bust but I was glad to get away from the city for a bit to spend a few days in the Adirondacks. πŸ—» The summer is not yet over, so there is still a chance for some adventures. This year I’m thinking of trying some different things and go new places as change prolongs time. Doing the same thing over and over again caches things ⌚ making things go by quickly. I’m not ready for Winter 2019-20 yet. ⏳ Summer should drag on for a bit.

Tonight will have areas of frost after 4am. Otherwise, mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 34 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical night around April 7th. Maximum dew point of 42 at 8pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 66 degrees. I’ll take it. We will see how it works out.

My aunt is coming up from Arizona, ✈ so I’m going to stick in town this weekend. It’s rather unfortunate we couldn’t have had this forecast the previous week. Maybe the following weekend I’ll head back to the wilderness. But before you know it, black fly season will be upon us.

I started looking at fixing up my bicycle 🚲. Bikes are really a fast and easy way to get around the city. Certainly much better than motoring. Buses are great but bikes go many places buses don’t go. The big thing I need for my bike is a new rear wheel with tougher spokes. Always seem to break spokes on it. I also need to fix some parts on the derailer too. I’m sure it can be done, I really need to get a good manual then get on ebay or Amazon for parts. Certainly having a good bike is key πŸ”‘ if I’m thinking of going carless for a few years after I get rid of Big Red sometime in the early to mid 2020s. I’m really tired of fossil fuel motoring and all the fees and costs surrounding motoring. Not to mention the many worries. Bicycling would be so much better for my health and so many of my friends and colleagues now are going motor free.

April 23, 2019 Night

Good evening! Rain showers and 65 degrees in Delmar, NY. β˜” There is a south breeze at 14 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 50 degrees. I did my errands and got packed and are ready to go except for packing the cooler and personal things which I will do in the morning.

I’m not sure how many days I’ll spend up north at this point, I don’t have a camping permit β›Ί so I’ll need to move my campsite if I stay in the same area the full weekend. I don’t know though. The nice weather for four days has become a soaker on Friday and Saturday looks to be cold and blustery. Maybe I’ll just enjoy two nights up north and come back Friday. That might be the best option at this point. Still I’m glad to be kicking off my traveling season. I have the time, I should use some of it. I don’t pay all this money for my truck to leave it parked all the time. I’m not bringing my tent πŸŽͺ but I have my heater with a full tank so I won’t run out.

 Route 23

April 22, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly cloudy with some clearing to the west and 62 degrees in Delmar, NY. β˜” There is a north breeze at 8 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 46 degrees. Made for kind of a nice sunset but I do wish it was a little sunnier all of today. The skies will clear around 10 pm.

It was a nice enough of an evening that I went to the park after work for a while with a book. πŸ“™ It was one of those self improvement type books that encourages you to think more about who you are and how to make a better future for your and make life more enjoyable. I’m really kind of bored with many parts of life, I’m kind of looking for new adventures and things to do while I’m still in New York making and saving money.

Looking for new ideas on things to do, not just the same trips year after year after working my job all week long. It’s all gotten too routine and life is going by too quickly. My desire to change is part of the reason why I’m thinking in a few years of getting a bicycle to replace my truck. 🚲 I feel like not having a vehicle would force me to adjust my life, have new experiences. Truck camping is fun but its all become the same. β›Ί Maybe this year once the black flies are done, I’ll do more wilderness camping with the hammock and packing light.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 49 degrees at 5am. Nine degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around May 21st. North wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, it was clear in the evening, which became mostly sunny by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 30 degrees. The record low of 26 occurred back in 1975.

Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous Moon πŸŒ– with 76% illuminated with the moon rising at 11:28 pm. The moon will set at 9:04 am. The Last Quarter Moon is on Thursday night with partly cloudy skies. The Flower Moon 🌝 is on Friday, May 17th. The sun will rise at 6:01 am with the first light at 5:32 am, which is one minute and 31 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ„ Tonight will have 10 hours and 14 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 39 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 73 degrees at 3pm. 11 degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around May 27th. I’ll take a late May day without the black flies and the humidity. Maximum dew point of 47 at 7am. Light and variable wind. A year ago, we had sunny. The high last year was 69 degrees. The record high of 87 was set in 2007. 2.4 inches of snow fell back in 1956.❄

Tomorrow I shop πŸͺ and pack for camping. β›Ί The plan is to set up camp in the Southern Adirondacks for two nights starting Wednesday after work. Friday looks fairly wet, so I’m thinking about driving up to Tupper Lake and maybe camping and hiking around there on Saturday then drive home on Sunday, maybe stopping a few places on the way back home. Probably take an easy drive back down along NY 30 both ways as I hate expressway driving. I think I’d rather do that then sit in the rain β˜” on Friday plus I haven’t been up to the Tupper Lake area in years, I think it’s five years since I camped at Horseshoe Lake and Jones Pond in that area. Not bringing the kayak, there is plenty to do on foot and I want to use the solar on the sunny days.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. πŸ˜• Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 58. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 62. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 40 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 63 degrees.

I’m still thinking about possibly one more camping trip before Memorial Day Weekend β›Ί, namely that Moss Island and pre summer season trip to Piseco-Powley Road but worse comes to worse that can wait until June. Going to be a busy month for me. A trip to Madison County and Rogers Environmental Education Center is another real possibility as is a trip to Spectator camping where I did last Labor Day Weekend. I figure I should travel and camp these next two years as much as I can if I’m thinking about going car less in 2021. That said, most of the places I’m planning on going this year are pretty ordinary, I kind of wish I could do something new and different for a change. I really need to think about more wilderness camping in the back country. It doesn’t have to be that heavy miserable big pack frame we used in Boy Scouts with no technology at all.

In four weeks on May 20 the sun will be setting at 8:16 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 30 minutes and 29 seconds later then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 75 and 56 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 71 and 48 degrees. The record high of 91 degrees was set back in 1962.

I’m really fascinated by possibilities and power of the Processing Modeler in QGIS. 🌐 By plugging different filters together, extracting and manipulating raster data and vectorizing it there is some pretty remarkable things I could dream up. There is a lot of great things you can do with digital mapping I’m just discovering now after all these years with QGIS. I think running out of state land to map in many ways is a blessing as it’s forced me to become more creative with the stuff I do with map data and add other useful features. Too often in life I find myself in a rut lacking creative energy or a desire to try something new.

I really should find time to rebuild my electronic VMS sign for my office but I think I need more wire and I’ve been loathe to spend more time with the soldering iron. πŸ”¬I should spend more rainy days on that kind of thing.

It’s still pretty early by I’m tired. 😴 I should finish putting my wash away and get to bed. Each night I keep retiring earlier but that’s fine because I wake up earlier. A good night’s sleep is important for doing a good job at work. Plus I have to pack for camp tomorrow.

Looking ahead, Memorial Day πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ is in 5 weeks, Average High is 80 πŸ– is in 2 months, Latest Sunset πŸŒ† is in 9 weeks, July 🏊🏿 is in 10 weeks, Cow Appreciation Day πŸ‚ is in 12 weeks, Last Sunset After 8 PM πŸŒ† is in 16 weeks, Labor Day πŸ‘¨β€πŸ is in 19 weeks, Autumn πŸ‚ is in 5 months and Columbus Day πŸ›₯️ is in 24 weeks.

April 21, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 57 degrees in Westerlo. ☁ There is a southwest breeze at 5 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 50 degrees. The skies will clear Tuesday around 9 am. We had a little bit of rain this evening but for the most part it pretty good evening. For the first time this season, sleeping in the truck cap.

The long weekend is coming to a close. πŸ˜• But it wasn’t as bad as some had predicted. I got my camping gear ready and it looks like the second half of this week I’ll be heading out camping. β›Ί The snow is gone and the weather has finally moderated.

Easter dinner at the folks house was good. 🐰I laid back in the hammock for a while out back. The hike this morning was nice, I saw a cotton tail out while hiking. Appropriate for Easter. πŸ‡ The next time Easter will be this late is a few years off, in 2038 Easter will be on April 25th, latest of the century. By then with climate change, it will probably be in the seventies or eighties for that Easter.

The high last year was 65 degrees. The record high of 86 was set in 1985. 1.0 inches of snow fell back in 1928.❄

That new phone πŸ“± holder I got for my truck from China is really nice. The spring loading it very tight but it mounts things so securely. No fear of my phone bouncing loose on the rough roads for sure. I never touch my phone while driving but I like having Waze open.

I changed the side on where my camping gear versus bedding is in the truck. β›ΊI now sleep on the drivers side which works better for me as the other side leaks a bit and now when I’m loading and unloading things I’m not reaching over switches.

Looking ahead, next weekend may be somewhat cool with 6 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. πŸ˜ƒ Next Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 57. Next Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 58. Typical average high for the weekend is 63 degrees. It’s going to be a nice weekend up in the Adirondacks for sure.

Boom? But man was born to wander

April 20, 2019 Evening

Good evening! Cloudy and 67 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a south-southeast breeze at 11 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 57 degrees. The rain is done for the remainder of the weekend but not much sun is expected. The skies will clear Thursday around 5 am. It is what it is.

Today was a pretty rainy day β˜” until around the three o’clock hour. Then it started to clear out. I went down to the library for a while uploaded some content I’ve been working on for the blog. While today has been a pretty wet day – my downstairs floors are all quite damp – it been pretty mild and I’ve been enjoying the fresh air. πŸ’¦Hopefully though it will dry out soon or I’m going to have get some bleach down to fight the certain mildew.

Today is 420 day and while I don’t smoke pot for the most part, I’ve playing with the GRASS functions in QGIS. 🌎 I’m too cheap and too broke after saving to buy marijuana much less alcohol but I sure like open source software. πŸ”“ Even once it’s legal in a few months. The GRASS system 🌾 is really powerful but has a steep learning curve, although now that’s integrated into QGIS its easy once you learn the functions to call. The next thing is to figure out how to script it. My interest lately has been doing more advanced things with the digital elevation models data and simplify it enough to use with Google Maps. 🌐

The sun will set at 7:43 pm with dusk around 8:13 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 65 degrees. The dew point will be 55 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 14 mph.

I thought πŸ’ about going to the grocery store today and maybe to get some epoxy but I will hold off on that for a while I think. I’m going to have to but groceries mid week for camping, so why make two trips with my fossil fuel burner.πŸš™ I almost thought about hiking down to the Normans Kill Gorge to see all the water raging but it’s already getting late and with the skies being fairly cloudy its going to get dark earlyπŸ˜•. Maybe that’s where I will hike on Easter Sunday.

Other things on my bucket list for today πŸ“ƒ are to load my camping gear into the truck and work on soldering together the other sign module I have. Lately I’ve not been working on as many electronics projects probably because I’ve been spending so much time on either the excerise bike 🚲 or working on mapping things and other coding projects.🌐

I finally got the cellphone πŸ“± holder I ordered from China in March. For a $1.90 it’s pretty solid unit that fits very snuggly to the vent of my truck. The old one I had was falling apart after I dropped it a while back. I think the old one it was ten dollars at Wal-Mart, came in ten times more packaging. Ali Express for certain things like simple electronics is really great if you are willing to wait.

Oxbow Pond Trail & Long Swing Trail

April 19, 2019 Night

Good evening! Light rain and 71 degrees in Delmar, NY. β˜” There is a south breeze at 13 mph. πŸƒ with gusts up to 23 mph πŸ’¨πŸ’¨πŸ’¨. The dew point is 58 degrees. Damp evening, I was going to go down to the library but the rain picked up and I got working on some code.

After my walk out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center 🐸 I explored the nature center for a bit. First time I’ve gone inside. They have some nice exhibits to help with species identification. I usually don’t like the fancy nature centers but this one was interesting.

Then I went home and took a nap. I took a shower 🚿 and then cooked dinner – hot meatballs subs with the Falvo’s meat balls I bought a few weeks ago and worked on some code relating to syncing the YouTube videos I downloaded to mp3s on my phone.

Not expecting a very good day tomorrow. 😒 But that’s fine, I’ll go down to the library for a while and work on some projects around the apartment.🏑 If the weather is rain free for a while I might start putting some of the camping gear back into my truck. I’m looking to leave on Wednesday after work most likely for camping which means everything needs to be packed and groceries bought by Tuesday evening.🍱 To ensure adequate cooling in the cooler, I’ve been freezing salt water ice in waterproof plastic coffee cans which should work quite well. I should look at getting some small waterproof thermometers to monitor the temperature in the coolers. I might run to Walmart and Lowe’s tomorrow to buy some more epoxy for tacking the LED strip up in the truck cap.πŸ’‘

Again, not a very nice day for Easter. 🐰 I don’t think I’ll plan on doing much hiking that day 🚢 but I could change my mind. I think mom and dad are planning Easter dinner pretty early so I don’t want to head too far out of town. I might join them at the diner on Easter morning, but it depends if it’s nice enough to go hiking later on as I don’t want to drive out to Clarksville and then turn around and drive home. Seems like a lot of wasted miles. 🚢
