More than 4 million U.S. homes face substantial risk of expensive flood damage, according to new research. On top of that, NPR climate reporter Rebecca Hersher found that communities where flood insurance is already unaffordable face potentially catastrophic damage β€” including to mental and physical health.

We are currently at a pivotal point in the nation's history of caring for the most frail and vulnerable. The way leaders respond to the horrific toll the pandemic has taken on nursing home residents will determine the future of nursing home care for years, possibly decades, to come.

This is not the first — or second — time where massive outrage has led to calls for significant change and reform in nursing homes. The problems that plague today's nursing homes are, in many ways, reminiscent and tied to their history in the United States.

Lately, every week when I got out to my parents house for Sunday dinner, the conversation inevitably goes to something along the lines of “I can’t believe how those other people live,” or “I don’t understand why anybody would want to live anywhere but New York State.” But maybe as somebody who is more conservative then them, I tend to see it differently. I also kind of get the impression they don’t want me to move out west, where I will be far away from them.
