GENEVA — The three main greenhouse gases hit record high levels in the atmosphere last year, the U.N. weather agency said Wednesday, calling it an "ominous" sign as war in Ukraine, rising costs of food and fuel, and other worries have elbowed in on longtime concerns about global warming in recent months.
"More bad news for the planet," the World Meteorological Organization said in a statement along with its latest annual Greenhouse Gas Bulletin. It's one of several reports released in recent days looking at several aspects of humanity's struggle with climate change in the run up to the U.N.'s latest climate conference, in Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt. Of the three main types of heat-trapping greenhouse gases — carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide — the biggest jump from 2020 to 2021 was in methane, whose concentrations in the air came in with the biggest year-on-year increase since regular measurements began four decades ago, WMO said.
"The continuing rise in concentrations of the main heat-trapping gases, including the record acceleration in methane levels, shows that we are heading in the wrong direction," said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.
Methane is more potent at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, but doesn't stay in the atmosphere nearly as long as carbon dioxide and there's 200 times more carbon dioxide in the air than methane. Over a 20-year time-period, a molecule of methane traps about 81 times the heat as a molecule of carbon dioxide but over a century it goes down to trapping 28 times more heat per molecule than carbon dioxide, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
Then more sun and nice heading into the week, but not as warm. But no complaints, it’s the last week of October. The sun will be nice. Actually most of the past October weekends have been quite nice, but I’ve been busy so I’ve had to stay home a lot of them, but maybe this is one to get out and explore.

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. π«
Does it really matter at this point with the weeks going by so quickly these days? You do the best with the limited time you have.
Cloudy, damp with fog around, 62 degrees in Bethlehem, NY. π« Mild for sure. Calm wind. The dew point is 61 degrees. Definitely damp out from last night’s rain. Maybe it’s good the landlord is working on the roof this morning before a leak occurs. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Saturday around 6 am. βοΈ
I was running π a bit late so I was literally running down the road to the express bus π but I made it and that’s all that really matters. But I ended up needing to be in the office π’ early but I got those emails π§ and done and getting my steps π£ in on the Plaza at least as many as I can.
It’s nice to be able to wear a t shirt π as it’s super mild for late October. π But also November looks to start out mild so maybe I’ll be able to do a Cazenovia trip before the snow π¨ and rifle season. It’s tough this year as Election Day π³ is unusually late for this time of year.
Yesterday was busy and insane π€ͺ, and by the time I got home, had dinner and walked it was time for bed π. But I like getting up early at six although with the mornings so dark this time of year doesn’t save much on electricity. π
Today I’ll probably go to the store π¬ and get groceries. I an thinking about heading out of town this weekend βΊ and maybe remote working on Friday π» and I know how busy Thursday gets with work.
Early Voting π³ starts Saturday but I’m not planning on voting until Election Day until maybe around 7 o’clock when I run home to get my big jacked up truck. π I am bit undecided about some of the races. I do think I will be voting though for pro-second amendment candidates. π« I’ve been reading the news about the debate last night, and it really has helped me make up my mind on some of the races.
