"Let me tell you something you already know: Your housekeeper spies on you. We work alone. We get bored. What do you expect? I worked for a company cleaning houses for two years. It was flexible. It paid well enough. I didn't think of it as a career, or identify with it; it was just what I did to get myself through college as a single mom."

November 14, 2018 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. Six weeks to Boxing Day 🥊. Cloudy, gray with a fresh dusting of snow, a chilly 20 degrees in Cooperstown. ❄ There is a west-northwest breeze at 8 mph. 🍃. As expected, it got very cold last night and will remain cold for the foreseeable future. Things will start to thaw out at Friday around 11 am. 🌡️

Today will be mostly cloudy a chance of flurries after 4pm. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 24 degrees at 1pm. 25 degrees below normal. Pretty darn cold. Northwest wind 8 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 40 degrees. The record high of 70 was set in 1973. 14.4 inches of snow fell back in 1972.❄

The sun will set at 4:37 pm with dusk around 5:07 pm, which is 56 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for cloudy skies and snow flurries 🌨 and temperatures around 23 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be 12. β˜ƒοΈ There will be a northwest breeze at 10 mph. I can’t believe we are already talking about windchill again. I’m glad I’m not camping in the wilderness. Today will have 9 hours and 46 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 11 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of flurries before 11pm. Partly cloudy ☁, with a low of 17 degrees at 3am. 15 degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical night around December 27th. Maximum wind chill around 17 at 3am; Northwest wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2017, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 34 degrees. The record low of 14 occurred back in 1939. Not quite record breaking cold but cold. I’ve camped in colder weather but it’s not pleasant.

I expect a busy day today. Probably will need the headlights when I head home for the night, as it will be late.❄ I’m hoping the roads remain safe, at least my headlights are well aimed and work well but not so good through heavy sleet and snow.

Looking ahead, there are 6 weeks until Boxing Day 🥊 when the sun will be setting at 4:32 pm with dusk at 5:04 pm. On that day in 2017, we had light snow, then partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 22 and 8 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 59 back in 1895.

The kilogram is dead; long live the kilogram

"But later this week, on Friday, November 16th, a coup is planned in this international ministry of weights. After having served for 129 years as the world’s standard, the International Prototype Kilogram (or Le Grand K, as it’s known locally) will be stood down. Grandees of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, which regulates the metric system, will gather in Versailles and vote to replace this physical artifact with a definition of the kilogram based on a fundamental constant of nature."

"The switch won’t be noticed by anyone outside of an advanced physics lab, but is a momentous occasion for those involved. β€œIt is the Halley’s Comet of metrology,” says Stephan Schlamminger, a physicist from the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) who worked on the equipment used for the coming changeover. β€œIt’s incredibly rare that a redefinition of this magnitude happens.” "
