Stratton, VT

July 6, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 67 degrees in Stratton, VT. There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 57 degrees. With that breeze it feels a bit cold at times, especially with the breeze, and laying back in the hammock.

It was a pretty nice day up in Vermont, lots of sun ☀ and not too hot. Battery bank and laptop got close to fully charged despite using the laptop for about half the day for finishing up a report and what seemed like an endless Zoom meeting. 📹 I just had this fear that my internet connection was going to drop during the meeting or the cellular internet connection would have problems but it all worked out fine.

No fire 🔥 tonight, instead I had a late dinner after my hour and half stroll down to Shep Meadow.

While Forest Road 71 is a nice walk with scenic curves and gentle grades, I don’t think I realized how long some of those grades were until I walked them. 🚶

I also spent an hour rereading part of the Cabin Porn book 📙 I got out of the library, studying the pictures more carefully of the various cabins and alternative living arrangements. 🏡 As much as I like camping I hope some day – maybe in a decade – I’ll have a simple place out in the country I’ll call home. 🐐 🐔 I have to say that the lantern 🏮 is burning bright 🔆 these days which is good for reading 📖 and the tent 🎪 was quite bug free. 🐜

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 60 degrees at 3am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around July 2nd. Maximum dew point of 59 at 11pm. South wind 3 to 8 mph. Honestly with the clear skies, I could see it getting even colder. In 2019, we had light rain in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 64 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1979.

Tonight will have a Waining Gibbous 🌖 Moon with 95% illuminated. The moon will rise at 10:06 pm. The darkest hour is at 12:57 am, followed by dawn at 4:45 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:20 am in the east-northeast (57°) and last for 3 minutes and 27 seconds. Sunrise is 40 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 6:03 am with sun in the east-northeast (65°). Tonight will have 8 hours and 46 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 2 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers between noon and 2pm, then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 74 degrees at 2pm. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 2nd. Maximum dew point of 61 at 3pm. South wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. It was very sticky. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1988.

It doesn’t seem like its going to be as hot tomorrow as I thought it would be at least up north here. 🗻 But I still think I need to head to West Wardsboro after work to get ice. And maybe a quick swing by Grout Pond to swim 🏊 and get cleaned off. Then I should be good until Thursday or Friday depending on how the ice holds up with the heat. I don’t think it will be nearly as warm here especially as I’m on a bit of a ledge with a good breeze and a fair bit of shade. 🍃 I don’t expect the weather to be amazing but I’m sure it will be better than at home.

In four weeks on August 3 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (295°) at 8:10 pm,🌄 which is 23 minutes and 10 seconds earlier then tonight. Days by then will be getting noticeably shorter, with the sun much closer to the west. In 2019 on that day, we had thunderstorm and temperatures between 85 and 66 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 82 and 61 degrees. The record high of 97 degrees was set back in 1975.

Well I think I’m going to wash up and head to bed. 😴 I often stay up too late when camping and my sleep suffers as the sun rises early this time of year, although this campsite is nestled in the mountains so the actual sunrise 🌅 is later here then the official time would suggest.

May 27, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Three weeks to Fathers Day 👨. Foggy, damp and 52 degrees in the Lye Brook Wilderness outside of Stratton. 🌁 There is a east breeze at 13 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 51 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 4 pm. Not a real nice day but also not a real soaker like last year and the black flies have gone away for now. 🐜Don’t you just wish there was a black fly emoji?

Yesterday I hiked back to Bourn and Stratton Pond. 🗻 Never been back to the later, it’s a fair bit more scenic than Bourn Pond I would argue, as it’s right below Stratton Mountain. Nice hike but especially the Lye Brook Trail between Bourn and Stratton Pond is kind of hard to follow in parts because blazing is sparse and there is some blow down. I didn’t get a really early start because I stayed up late the night before because of the black flies which disappear after dark.

Today will have a chance of showers. Cloudy ☁, with a high of 54 degrees at 12pm. 19 degrees below normal. Maximum dew point of 51 at 10am. East wind around 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly cloudy skies. The high last year was 71 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 1914.

I’ve decided to I’ll head home in a little bit as it’s rather wet and gray. 🌁 Solar panel is still putting out a dozen or so watts, enough to maintain the accessory battery charge although I did start the truck up briefly as I hadn’t run it in 36 hours and wanted to make sure I didn’t wear down the starting battery from opening and closing doors, causing the computer under the hood to boot up and use a little bit of voltage. I have both the starting battery and the accessory battery hooked to voltage meters so I can monitor it but I know sometimes a surface charge can be misleading.

The sun will set at 8:20 pm with dusk around 8:54 pm, which is 54 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for possible rain showers ☁ and 50 degrees. There will be a east breeze at 11 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 3 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 33 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have scattered showers, mainly before 11pm. Cloudy ☁, with a low of 47 degrees at 1am. Four degrees below normal. East wind 6 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2017, we had mostly cloudy skies. It got down to 60 degrees. The record low of 33 occurred back in 1994.

As you might guess, cell service is pretty spotty around here🔕 but it’s kind of nice to be off the phone network with the constant pings and pongs of email and social media. There are a few places I can get a weak signal but honestly I’m fine with being a bit disconnected this weekend. 🐸 That said I kind of have to check my email from time to time for work emails. 🐣

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Fathers Day 👨 when the sun will be setting at 8:33 pm with dusk at 9:09 pm. On that day in 2017, we had mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 81 and 64 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 79 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 1994.
