No Agenda Days โ
One of the central parts of my summer vacation are “No Agenda Days” where I don’t drive anywhere, but instead spend my time in free-form around camp, reading, hanging out, fishing, hiking and biking. Nothing formal or going to a specific venue, besides the National Forest – just rest and relaxation away form it all.
Often I feel like my summer vacations are too structured, too much about hitting as many destinations as possible, when I really should be just simply relaxing, clearing my mind with no set agenda. There is a lot to do within a short distance of camp, I need not make a formal trip down to Ithaca or Watkins Glen to maximize my enjoyment during summer vacation.
A lazy day back from crazy town ๐คช
Despite driving all the way down to Elmira and wanting to explore more of Big Flats and Elmira downtown to take in the full Mark Twain, those plans were cut short when the skies opened up around 4 PM last night and kept raining into the evening, though it cleared up by the time I got back to camp, only to rain throughout the night into the morning.
After a rather dark and rainy morning, โ๏ธ the sun is peaking back out. The Elmira trip wasn’t a disaster or all that bad, but it was a lot of driving and was cut short by the rain. The Steede Hill Preserve was kind of a disappointment – I think I missed the trail to the overlook but the Tanglewood Nature Center was remarkably nice to explore, even if it was at one level just another “woke” suburbanite children nature center, the live Pythons and timber rattlers in cages was pretty darn neat. As was the fisher and raptors they had in the outside bird barns. ๐ The views of the Chemung River Valley south of Big Flats from the Mark Twain Trail was pretty good, and the ice cream ๐ฆ options at the Alpine Ice Cream stand was impressive though I think I ended up ordering the most lame thing on the menu for $8. But vacation, I wanted a peanut butter ๐ฅ and Reese Peanut Buttercup sundae.
Elmira in the evening was a hot mess.๐ฅ Even by the standards of a town mostly known these days for it’s Psychiatric Center, the college, the Mark Twain exhibits. Crazy, right up my league! My GPS took me through a tour of much of the city in search of a gas station โฝ and then it was tight getting in and out of the parking lot, and my suspension on my truck let me know with a few nerve-wracking cracks and pops. Nothing new but never great to hear on vacation. I so wanted to ride around downtown Elmira and visit some of the Mark Twain Historic sites like his study, but I wasn’t going to do it in the pouring rain. ๐ง๏ธ Then of course I thought there would be free parking down at the Elmira – Lowman Rail Trail ๐ฒ but first in what I thought was a free parking lot, I saw a big “Private Parking – Tow Away” ๐ Sign then the other lot I noticed – it was advertised as a Park and Ride Lot, I get there and there is a big sign that said $5 Daily Parking. I am sure I could have found free on street parking somewhere else, but it was pouring rain.
So yeah, I gave up waiting for the rain to stop, which seemed to just keep popping up on the radar as soon as I could have hoped for the clouds to pass overhead. ๐ฅ๏ธ It was obnoxious. I decided I would drive down to the other end of the rail trail at Lowman but I tell you I-86 between Elmira and Lowman was so rough on my crap truck suspension. The truck was going “Whoop! Whoop! Whoop!” and jarring along the rough concrete panels of the road. I thought something had broke in my truck almost ๐ ๏ธ but it turned out once I got off the rough as fuck road, it was good. ๐ป I stopped at Lowman but it was still drizzling hard, and while the parking lot was free there, I wasn’t going to ride on the lower part of the Rail Trail which goes right along I-86 and was certainly noisy.
So I dipped down in Pennsylvania ๐ข๏ธ to spot some garbage burning barrels, which certainly is not hard in BFE Penna. It’s true more and more farms and homesteads now have dumpsters or even trash pickup but many still burn too at least paper and cardboard.ย ๐ฆ I get it, it stinks and is toxic with all that plastics that is part of garbage. Drove back up through Waverly then up through Van Etten. Only a few burn barrels being back in New York State but I still had a smile ๐ on my face, that being that I had been in Pennsylvania for a few minutes. It’s just interesting how the little towns in Pennsylvania have a very different feel then New York, the businesses and signs are different. Even the dairies and homesteads in Pennsylvania have a different feel then in New York. ๐ฅ The Cliffs around Cliff Side State Forest in Van Etten are impressive, as is that valley, and the giant wood mill that is out that way. ๐ชYou forget how truly much timber is produced by the forests around here. I had my ice cream in Alpine, ultimately regretting my choice of many good ones on the menu. I got back, had a nice little fire, smoked some weed, drank too much beer and no water, ๐ป and woke up this morning with a terrible hang over. ๐คฎ I didn’t drink any water yesterday, bad idea, I knew as soon as I started feeling leg-cramps mid-day, ๐ฆต but somehow I got busy and ignored the obvious decision.
This morning I slept in quite late – almost until 8 AM โฐ as it’s dark in the woods this time of year, and the morning was awful cold, cloudy and wet. โ Certainly not a banner morning into he woods. Made eggs ๐ฅ up and then headed over to the Backbone Trail trailhead where I knew I would have good cell service and canceled my September 2nd appointment ๐ with the Capital Truck Works to get the shock bushing fixed on my truck. So many things are shit on my truck, and if it makes it home from vacation, I plan to hobble it along hopefully through the fall and winter before trading it in for my next rig. As the day progressed, there was times of sun, โ๏ธ times of advertising on radio about ‘Hope Over Addiction’ apparently because I like a little grass and beer after a long day up in the woods. Read ๐ for a while, renewed my fishing license, ๐ฃ this afternoon I’ll toss my line in either Potomac or Foster Pond. Need to find another audio book to listen to next.
Elmira Day ๐ถ
Good morning Happy Tuesday! Looks like another really nice day today. Thinking of heading to Elmira area today. Steege Hill Preserve to start out the day then Tanglewood Nature Center on the opposite side of the valley, then I’m going to park ๐๏ธ and ride around Elmira checking out some of the Mark Twain historical stuff and then ride along the Chemung Canal bike trail ๐ฒ to Lowman and maybe do a dip down to Pennsylvania to explore some of the back roads, then head north through Sayre to Van Etten and get ice cream in Alpine and try to be back to camp ๐๏ธ by eight o’clock so I’m not driving in the pitch blackness. ๐
Finally got to have a fire ๐ฅ last night and it was needed as both the trash was overflowing in my bucket ๐ชฃand it was a cold damp evening after a shower ๐ฆ๏ธ passed through though I missed the rain as I was in Watkins Glen though I did feel a few rain drops when I was riding ๐ฒ Rock Cabin Road and over to the promande. It was a pretty good evening, fried up some zucchini and onions I got at the Burdett Exchange. Pricey but it’s a convenience for local farm produce available 9-6 pm daily. Skipped the sweet corn ๐ฝ because it was a buck an ear, and I was like a farm stand would be far fresher.
Swimming ๐ was less cold than I expected at Watkins Glen though hardly pleasant with the clouds, breeze and drizzle. Hiked through the Watkins Glen Gorge then swam for a short while before getting ice cream ๐ฆ. If I hadn’t needed ice and supplies I would have been content with staying in camp all day.
One month until the big snip ๐โ๏ธ
Friday September 26th is when my LASIK surgery occurs. 1 pm to be exact. $4,400 and I will never have to buy or deal with contact lenses again – or struggle with glasses and irrated eyes. At one level, I get it’s a lot of money but it’s only a few days of eye pain plus some cash for something that will last a lifetime of good vision both day and night.
Monday morning after the rain โ
Sunny, mostly clear and cool with the breeze and temperatures in the sixties. I’m in no rush for anything this morning, no solid plans for today besides going to Watkins Glen midday to get supplies.
Yesterday turned out to be a nice day โ๏ธ though a lot hotter and humid then expected but I enjoyed just walking ๐ถ around the National Forest and exploring. This year I really don’t have the urge to go out and rush around to see everything, indeed in years past I feel like I’ve seen most of the most interesting things in the area – plus there is still eight days left.
I discovered why the bike ๐ฒ tire wasn’t holding air. ๐ฒ Valve stem was cracked, all the fix a flat in the world can’t fix that. I put the spare tube on and checking the spokes and found I broke one either riding trail or more likely riding home with the soft but not flat tire. AI’m figuring I’ll ride the bike a bit and while I didn’t pack extra spokes or the torx 25 key if I need to I can get the wheek fixed in Ithaca. I’ll pick up another spare tube at Walmart to be safe and toss the old tube in a village garbage can as I’m not going to burn rubber trash. ๐ And I have plenty of old tubes at home not full ofย tire slime.
I noticed it seems like the accessory battery ๐ wasn’t charging well when the truck was running but I think it’s voltage drop on the gauge due to the neutral wire not having a good connection to the frame. Popped the hood and noticed the coolant was already a little bit below the full line despite topping it off before vacation. Things are tired ๐ซ and worn out on the truck. Fingers ๐ crossed it makes it through summer vacation. At times there seems to be so much wrong with my increasingly worn out truck.
I have mixed feelings about taking it slow on vacation ๐๏ธ like I’m wasting my time reading ๐ and wandering pastures. I feel much too lazy just hanging out in the hammock drinking ๐ป and smoking all day. It’s not healthy! Still I want a slow paced summer vacation, I don’t want the stress of driving a long ways in my old truck, constantly racing the clock. I really do want to wile away the hours โ without them disappearing too quickly. Labor Day and September will be here before you know it and I will have to head back home. ๐ก And then work.
I totally wanted to have a rip roaring fire ๐ฅ last night both because I knew it would be cold and wet and because I have a ton of camp garbage to burn up – a lot of wet garbage and plastics too from clam shells to corn cobs to the wrappers everything comes in. I haven’t had a fire since Thursday night because on the weekend night I got home late and last night it started pouring at 7 pm and continued well into the night ๐๏ธ after which I was snuggled up in my truck camper.
