October 19, 2016 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 51 degrees in North Syracuse. Calm wind. The dew point is 49 degrees. Not really cool but fairly damp with the rain expected over the next few days.

Sort of half watched the debate. While I voted for Jill Stein, I’ve grown quite comfortable with Hillary Clinton as the likely next president. Trump is just getting killed so badly. The Republicans really made a bad choice with their choice. It will be interesting to see how badly they loose come election day.

As a low information voter, I’ve never really paid all that much attention to nation politics. I’ve always been more interested in state politics, but even them I don’t follow that carefully. I occasionally read the State of Politics blog, but mostly I get my news from social media and WAMC / NPR in morning. Been watching the PBS Newshour more, but I still don’t think I’m that well informed about the happenings in government.

I’m happy I got my truck inspected today. I checked the oil today and it’s in the normal range at 3/4 mark in the normal trange. I do need to think about getting the brake pads replaced and tires rotated, preferably before my November trip. Might go back to Mavis in Cicero to have that done. We’ll see. Might be easier to just get it done before I risk damaging the rotators.

I think I double paid my car insurance bill. I overpaid the first time then when I got the revised bill I thought I canceled it but it looks like the money was sent. I’m hoping the insurance company will deny the transaction. It’s kind of a pain but some how the auto pay didn’t cancel.

While watching the debate, I made up some more maps of Western NY forests. Should be caught up on map of the day for a while.

Tonight will have scattered showers, mainly after 5am. Increasing clouds, with a low of 48 degrees at 5am. Nine degrees above normal. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. The record low of 18 occurred back in 1972. Waning Gibbous Moon tonight with 69% illuminated.Β The Last Quarter Moon is on Friday night with chance of showers expected. The Full β€œBeaver” Moon is on Sunday, November 20th night .

Tomorrow will rain likely before 2pm, then scattered showers between 2pm and 4pm, then rain likely after 4pm. Cloudy, with a high of 60 degrees at 4pm. Two degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 55 at 4pm. East wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. The record high of 80 was set in 1965. The sun will rise at 7:24 am with the first light at 6:55 am, which is 1 minutes and 14 seconds later then yesterday.

Looking ahead, Regular Season Opener Β in Southern Zone is in 1 month and First Day with Temperatures Recorded Below Zero is in 6 weeks.

There are 18 days, 23 hours and 17 minutes until the polls close in NY State on Election Day.

October 10, 2016 Night

Good evening! As our Columbus Day Weekend raps up the mercury is quickly dropping. Clear and 39 degrees in North Syracuse. Calm wind. Cold night ahead.

I thought it was a nice Columbus Weekend but it went by much too quickly. Next big holiday is Election Day and Veterans Day which falls on a Friday this year. But then again, I will probably just take that week off. I have a lot of time to take off during hunting season and before the end of the year.

Jones Hill was pretty today but I sure was disappointed it wasn’t peak color. I might head back come the weekend. We will see. I also want to explore Jamesville Reservation before the colors are gone and more of Green Lakes State Park but the later is only a short drive from where I am staying.

The next few nights will be really clear and cold. Lots of stars but also with our first real frost of the year.

Tonight will have patchy frost after 4am. Otherwise, mostly clear, with a low of 34 degrees at 6am. Seven degrees below normal. Calm wind. The record low of 22 occurred back in 1943. Waxing Gibbous Moon tonight with 65% illuminated. The moon will set around 4:18 am. The Full β€œHunter” Moon is on Saturday night  with partly cloudy skies expected and a chance of showers.

Tomorrow will have patchy frost before 9am. Otherwise, sunny, with a high of 65 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 39 at 6pm. Light southeast wind. The record high of 86 was set in 1949. The sun will rise at 7:13 am with the first light at 6:45 am, which is 1 minutes and 11 seconds later then yesterday.

Looking ahead, Halloween is in 3 weeks and Beaver Moon is in 5 weeks.

Donald Trump’s Taxes

I do not have a problem with Donald Trump writing off $960 million from his taxes on year, if he legitimately took a risk and lost money that year — and even rolling over that loss to other years. But if he made future profits, and he regained his money, he sure as hell should be paying taxes on that money. Many business people have very good and very bad years. Ask any farmer for sure.

We want people to invest money and take responsible risks.Β When they lose money in a particular year, they shouldn’t have to pay taxes on their loses.Β There should be a smoothing mechanism so that one’s one year loss can be balanced about by future gains. But you shouldn’t be able to avoid to pay any taxes, when you have a net gain in assets and wealth over time.

The bigger the investor you are, and the bigger your wealth, the bigger losses and gains.Β But you still should pay your fair share in taxes.Β I have some serious questions about how Donald Trump has deducted expenses and exploited the tax code to his advantage.

Trump really should release his tax returns before the election.
