Balsam Swamp State Forest

Balsam Swamp is a sprawling state forest that stretches almost 5.5 miles east-west across 4 towns. The area is very rural, and the landscape surrounding the State Forest is predominantly forested. Balsam Swamp State Forest is comprised of a mix of native hardwood forests, hemlock swamps, and conifer plantations. There are no designated recreational trails on the forest, but there is ample opportunity for self-guided day hikes to explore the diversity of habitats represented on this State Forest. Additionally, the western section of Balsam Swamp State Forest is adjacent to Five Streams State Forest to the south.

The main attraction of this forest is Balsam Pond. The impoundment is approximately 152 acres and is a popular destination for fishing and paddle boat sports. Balsam Pond is a warm water fishery that contains a mix of largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, yellow perch, brown bullhead and sunfish. Tiger muskellunge have been stocked in the past with the last stocking occurring in 1995. However, there have been very few reports of anglers catching any of the adult tiger muskies. A shallow gravel boat launch is suitable for launching small fishing boats.

A small rustic camp ground is also located at Balsam Pond. Camping spaces are available at no cost on a first-come, first-serve basis and there is no running water or electricity. A fire ring, outhouse, and picnic table are provided for each camping space. A sign on Balsam-Tyler Road in Pharsalia designates the entrance to the boat launch and camping facility. This is a carry-in carry-out facility. Please do not litter.

Daily Update – October 31, 2022

Good morning! Happy Halloween! 🦇 🎃

As the bus slowly departs the station as the driver sips his coffee. It is a pleasant end to the month of October which ended most pleasantly.

Partly sunny and 43 degrees at the Elm Ave Park and Ride. 🌅 Calm wind. And like that, we depart the station 🚉 right on time.

It was to get away for a couple of days ⛺ even if it was just Rennselearville State Forest. I know winter is coming with gas prices heading back up and such trips will be more infrequent but it was a break from the craziness of urban life. 🤪

Walking the Plaza early this morning 🚶 trying to get my steps 👣 in earlier as I’m not sure if I will walk this evening with Halloween 🦇 but I do want to make sure I get the 10k in for the day regardless.

The state is busy setting up the ice rink ⛸ for the opening around Thanksgiving 🦃 and the holiday season. 🎅 🎄 I have to admit I listened to a track from a Christmas record the other day when I was feeling so sick 🤮. Seasons come and go so quickly these days, 🌸 spring will be here before you know it or so I tell myself.

Last week going to work before the time change. 🕒 More sunlight in the morning will be nice but not the very dark evening commute, especially the walk home in the dark. But next week is a three day work week with the Lunar Eclipse 🌒 holiday on Tuesday and Veterans Day 🪖 on Friday.

So far it’s been a relatively quiet morning 📧, the emails, texts and phone calls with projects have yet to roll 🍥 in. I have a list 📃 from the weekend but it’s only so long. Maybe though after my sick day on Friday there is a bunch of things I don’t know about.

Depending on how busy I am next week and the weather ☀ that will decide if I do a trip out of town for Veterans Day Weekend. I have surprisingly little vacation time left this year after I sell back a bunch of time to pay for my health insurance. 😷

Weather Update – October 31, 2022

Lots of sunny days and mild to start out November 🍂

On the warmer side for Halloween 🦇 which the kiddies will like 🍬 with rain ☔ showers later. Tuesday is the only less than great day but it still will be quite mild. Weekend looks mild but I am thinking it will be cloudier ⛅ and maybe wetter then what they are suggesting right now. I don’t see any freezing weather or snow 🌨 in the near future. That said, we are continuing to loose daylight and things are very much heading towards the time change 🕒 next week.

Daily Update – October 30, 2022

Good morning! Happy Sunday.

Nice final weekend of October. The bright sun, no breeze really makes it feel quite warm and sunny.

Sunny and 32 degrees at the Rensselaerville State Forest. 🌞 Calm wind.

While I’ve been quite busy with work 📱 it’s been nice to get away for two nights, do some walking around and observing 🔭 nature through the binoculars. It’s been nice coming up here every third weekend and noticing the shift into autumn from greens to colors to the grays of November. Been so clear and nice. ✨

I swear that Friday I was going to get the cold 🤯 that was going around the office with a terrible migraine the fresh air and the sun ☀ seems to have nipped it in the butt. Ever since I got out in the woods 🌲 I’ve been feeling so much better.

Work has been just so tough lately. 😩 I’ve had this client who has been so obnoxious, giving us a daily demeaning of the work we do. My truck is old 🔧 and falling apart piece by piece, and I just don’t really know what to do about it. My apartment is equally as bad. So a weekend in nature is nice. 🐿 Just walking and observing. I’m facing age 40 down the barrel and there is so many things I want to do but I feel so stuck in life. The woods helps. Just siting, listening 👂 and observing.

Hiked ten 🔟 miles yesterday 🚶 just over the dirt roads and truck trails of the State Forest. Nothing real special. Been reading 📖 a book on Willie Wilkerson that utility executive that ran against Franklin Roosevelt in the 1940 election. Interesting character.

Out for a walk 🚶 this morning and then I will head home, shower 🚿 get unpacked and head out to the folks house for Sunday dinner. Want to try to get back home so not driving 🚘 in the dark this evening.

Probably the last time I will camp at Rennselearville State Forest ⛺ for a while but I might do an occasional winter camping and skiing 🎿 trip after rifle season is over in December. With energy prices so high and my truck getting old I’m trying to really cut back where possible.

Weather Update – October 29, 2022

Sunny and mild this next week ☀

Seems like almost a perfect start to November after many really nice October days. Certainly no rush to turn the heat back on at home. At some point the pattern will flip as it always does and probably be cold and snowy but I figure enjoy it while you still can. I totally could see snow for Thanksgiving though these days that’s pretty rare.

Daily Update – October 29, 2022

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Made it to the last weekend of October 🎃

Let’s be honest, it’s essentially November. Tuesday is. If I had to choose I much prefer the way the woods looks with the leaves off the trees.

Cold start to the morning in the twenties but warming up fast. Sunny and already 45 degrees at the Rensselaerville State Forest. 🌞 Calm wind.

Chilly this morning, used the heater but also cold tonight. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tonight around 1 am. ☃️ But it is almost November and today is beautiful so no complaints.

I had planned to head out of town for the weekend ⛺ but I felt so sick on Friday morning 🤮 but by afternoon was feeling better and already had things packed. Last weekend until March with Daylight Savings Time so figured best to make the most of the additional time ⌚ in the evening. Plus it’s mild, sunny and not too breezy though it was down in the twenties by morning.

Out walking today 🚶 stopping to observe nature 🐦 🦃 🦌 and reply to too many work emails 📧. I have to say it’s been a working trip. Hardly just a vacation. But I’m getting good at reviewing Google Docs from my phone and my current phone has a long battery 🔋 life.

Big fire 🔥 last night 🌃, though I retired to bed 🛏 by around 9 o’clock. Going forward I’m going to start cleaning and separating out the recyclable plastics ♻ as I shift towards more of a winter mode of living with fewer trips. I don’t care they burn fine but urban recycling is good too that is when it’s not a scam. That said, when own my homestead I doubt I’ll recycle much off the farm except maybe metals. The rest will be fed, composted or burnt. 🐽 Real recycling is about making less garbage by buying less crap and making the most of what you and your land has. 🚜

I really do love these clear days 🍂 once the leaves are off the trees. Something about how clear the woods is without leaves on the trees, the long November shadows. Knowing that winter is coming ❄ but there is something wonderful as nature prepares for the time ahead.
