The Rattlesnake Hill Wildlife Management Area is a 5,100 acre upland tract, situated approximately eight miles west of Dansville, New York. Roughly two-thirds of the area lies in southern Livingston County, while the remaining third lies in northern Allegany County. The tract was purchased in the 1930’s under the Federal Resettlement Administration and is one of several such areas turned over to DEC for development as a wildlife management area.
The area is appropriately named after the Timber Rattlesnake, which may be occasionally found in the more remote sections of the “Hill”.
The area offers an interesting blend of upland habitats such as mature woodland, overgrown fields, conifer plantations, old growth apple orchards and open meadows.
The area is inhabited by a variety of game species and is open to public hunting. The white-tailed deer, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, grey squirrel, cottontail rabbit and woodcock are found on the area. An occasional snowshoe hare may be observed adjacent to thick creek bottom brush or conifer plantation habitats.
A number of small marsh units have been developed and provide limited hunting for waterfowl. Some of the area’s furbearing species such as mink, beaver and raccoon may be occasionally viewed at these marsh units.
Nice morning today on this pseudo Friday as tomorrow is Veterans Day Weekend. Too bad two inches of rain is coming our way come Friday afternoon from a hurricane.
Sunny and 37 degrees at the Elm Ave Town Park. π Calm wind. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Monday around 4 am. βοΈ
It would be a beautiful morning π to be sitting out at camp with a cup of coffee β next to the heater watching the sun rise. But calendar π it doesn’t work for me so I’m out walking πΆ this morning, will have breakfast π₯ and then shower πΏ and head to work.
I often think about all the interesting — and time saving things — I’ve learned in R over the past year and a half. On Election Night, I wrote a script that used a headless Firefox browser and Selenium to pull Election Results in real-time and process it into an a Google Spreadsheet. I was pleasantly surprised how well it worked, and how with a few extra lines of code I could pipe it into ggplot and make all kinds of maps.
The New York City Gubernatorial maps I posted where much the same way. I took data from several NYC Election Night Results pages, aggregated it into a data frame, cleaned up and formatted the data, then piped it through to ggplot with some nice styling.
Every day, I try to learn and experiment in new directions, build my skills further. As I only become faster and more talented at using R the more I use it and learn the many shortcuts and libraries out there for writing better code, quicker.
I am disappointed as it was going to be a long weekend and I thought it would be a nice weekend to head out to Cazenovia before riffle season. βΊ Maybe in December I’ll do that trip or maybe just the horse π΄ camp in Brookfield. Or the Adirondacks π» after Thanksgiving. π¦

After being up really early to see the lunar eclipse π on Tuesday I slept into 7 pm today. But I’m hopeful that I can get my steps π£ in today like I did yesterday though not by a lot.
Today if I have time, I want to go through the Election Results π³ and see what I can learn from studying the numbers.π Maybe maybe make up some maps πΊ and graphs. π That said I’m not sure how many surprises there will be an a ED by ED breakdown probable won’t be available in most counties until the final canvas around Thanksgiving.
Was I trilled about the Election Results? π΄ Probably not, but I did my part and voted. I don’t get super political these days, and I see the writing on the wall. Maybe it’s a good thing, it will be interesting to see if the state moves forward on their aggressive green energy and climate goals. Maybe the technology is there now, but I have questions. π It always seems so quiet and different once the elections are done.

The moon was such a blood red color and I saw pretty much the full eclipse around six but earlierit was better due to the moon being higher in the sky.
Clear and 39 degrees in Delmar, NY. π There is a northwest breeze at 11 mph. π. Temperatures will drop below freezing around midnight. βοΈ
The eclipse was spectacular π especially around 5:30, but wasn’t truly full until around 6. I went for my morning walk πΆ around 5:45 so I could observe the eclipse and the sunrise thought I was having trouble with my contacts and things were quite blurry.
I was up early so I decided to vote before work π³ and just get it done. I had been thinking a lot about how I was going to split the ticket βοΈ and ultimately when I got to the privacy booth I knew which bubbles to fill in. I voted for who I believed was right for my interests and you don’t have to agree with all my choices.
That said, ultimately I think people make too big of a deal over those little scantron dots β people fill out on Election Day. Competition is good but ultimately who is the political leader doesn’t effect ordinary life all that much. People should take responsibility for their own actions and not blame it all on the politicians. π΄οΈ
It’s a beautiful day. β Cool with the breeze compared to the weekend but it’s best to get out and enjoy it while you still can. Going to be much colder by next week though no snow π¨ expected locally in the near future.
