Rattlesnake Hill WMA

The Rattlesnake Hill Wildlife Management Area is a 5,100 acre upland tract, situated approximately eight miles west of Dansville, New York. Roughly two-thirds of the area lies in southern Livingston County, while the remaining third lies in northern Allegany County. The tract was purchased in the 1930’s under the Federal Resettlement Administration and is one of several such areas turned over to DEC for development as a wildlife management area.

The area is appropriately named after the Timber Rattlesnake, which may be occasionally found in the more remote sections of the “Hill”.

The area offers an interesting blend of upland habitats such as mature woodland, overgrown fields, conifer plantations, old growth apple orchards and open meadows.

The area is inhabited by a variety of game species and is open to public hunting. The white-tailed deer, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, grey squirrel, cottontail rabbit and woodcock are found on the area. An occasional snowshoe hare may be observed adjacent to thick creek bottom brush or conifer plantation habitats.

A number of small marsh units have been developed and provide limited hunting for waterfowl. Some of the area’s furbearing species such as mink, beaver and raccoon may be occasionally viewed at these marsh units.

Banana peels 🍌 and orange shells 🍊

Lately I’ve been using the full seedless orange in cooking. The shell has a fair amount of flavor and shredded it adds healthy fiber to the shredded orange to help balance out the fructose. Obviously wash I first but the shred is a wonderful toping on Greek yogurt or pancakes. Or just to eat in a bowl with some ginger mixed in.

Following up on that logic, I’ve decided to try cooking banana peels. While not as flavorful, it seems silly to waste them. I’ve done them shredded and fried in olive oil with apples and banana inners. I’ve also done banana peel chips in the broiler with lots of cinnamon. Pares well with baked apple. It’s a good tactic to battle inflation and reduce waste in your own life. And it’s more fiber to fill you up and slow the absorption of the fructose.

I’m not diabetic but that’s a nasty, deadly disease that ultimately will kill you if you are unfortunate enough to secumb to it. Really if you can save your pancreas by limiting sugars of all types and eating a high fiber diet you can greatly improve your quality of life for today and decades to come.

Final Friday of 2023 ☺

The year is coming to a close. I decided to work from home today so I can run to the store midday to get the supplies and food I need for the New Years Eve trip and probably because we’ll get released early and frankly because I don’t expect a busy day today at work today. If I have downtime, might as well work from home. But first a quick ride out to Voorheesville to get some exercise before work starts.

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Clouds and 42 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☔ Calm wind. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow night around 10 pm. ☃️ But first quite mild.

I was pleasantly surprised ☺ that there is no showers around this morning 🚲 and I can do a morning bike ride before work for some exercise and working at home. Some things to do today but should be a generally slow day. At lunch time I want to get propane 🏮 so my tank is full for camping 🏕 along with toothpaste and other things on my list at Walmart. 📃

Today will have a chance of showers. Patchy fog before noon. Otherwise, cloudy 🌦, with a high of 47 degrees at 1pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 22nd. Calm wind becoming southwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 48 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1984. 6.0 inches of snow fell back in 1915.❄

I managed to set off the smoke alarm twice this morning while cooking. 🧑‍🚒 I I’m sure my neighbor loves me for that fortunately he works the early shift. 🍳 Shredded onions and spinach with eggs 🥚 made into a cake with mushrooms and peppers. Pretty good, fiber rich breakfast. I’ve also been enjoying that carrot 🥕 bread I made – the vital wheat gluten really helps improve the consistency 🍞 and between the shredded carrots and the baking soda it baked to a nice deep color, almost like pumpernickel bread moist with the consistency almost of cake. And this time it wasn’t so tough on my stomach. 🤰🏽

I think I’ll probably head up to camp ⛺ mid-morning tomorrow for the New Years Holiday. 🎊 Not planning anything too fancy just two nights in the wilderness with a fire 🔥 and some sparklers 🎇 and try to stay up until midnight on NYE and toast in 2024. Maybe fry up some walnuts and cranberries. Listen to podcasts 📻 and enjoy the mild weather and probably mud. I’m going to ride some trails and roads 🚲 though probably a lot will be muddy.

Looking ahead to Sunday, New Years Eve, partly sunny, ☀ with a high near 38. Northwest wind 8 to 11 mph. Typical average high for the weekend is 35 degrees.

Christmas Eve Sunset

A better Thursday closing out 2023 ☺

The days go by so quickly it seems, though in the case of yesterday maybe not quick enough. Things just got off on the wrong start with the smoke alarm yesterday, compared to today with warm fresh carrot bread and banana oatmeal pancakes.

Good morning! From here on out the sun will be setting after 4:30 PM 🌆 . Slowly but surely the days are getting longer out, step by step. Rain and 44 degrees at the Elm Ave Park and Ride. ☔ There is a north breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Saturday around 11 pm. ☃️

After slamming my way through the morning yesterday, 💥 it turned out to be a pretty decent day and things went fairly smoothly. I caught the express bus 🚍 home and between the lunch time and an evening walk 🚶 got my steps in for the day. Made up a bunch of whole wheat bread 🍞🥖 – one loaf with rye and the other with carrots 🥕 and was in bed by nine 🛏 and got a good night’s sleep.

Today will have a chance of showers. Patchy fog before noon. Otherwise, cloudy 🌦, with a high of 47 degrees at 2pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 22nd. North wind 3 to 5 mph. Another mild day ahead. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 41 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1982. 7.0 inches of snow fell back in 1967.❄

Another dreary day on tap 🌨️ but we could be slip sliding our way through it but it’s too warm and I’m not paying for the heat. 👣 It’s not a bad day for walking laps around the Plaza before work and I’ll turn on that brass lamp that I like a little too much when I get to my office 🏢. I wonder if my new office will have a brass table lamp. After all that is what is truly important in the world these days. I just like shinny things that don’t harbor viruses and bacteria. 🛋️

I have to admit it just was difficult to shift gears from Madison County 🐮 back to work. It was just so much fun spending Christmas at the horse camp. 🎅 Yes, it was damp and cold at times, with that tangy taste of manure on the air 💩 but it seemed so far away from Albany. The mornings were so dark that I slept in pretty late. I was fortunate that I was able to get away for six days.

Tonight will have a chance of showers. Cloudy 🌧, with a low of 41 degrees at 5am. 22 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 17th. Light northwest wind. I haven’t decided if I will work from home tomorrow, 💻 I have those end of the month reports to run and it would be easier to do from the office though I have bandwidth on my phone 📱 to do it if I wanted. I would kind of like to get propane at lunch time 🏮 and food and supplies for camping 🏕 this weekend. 🪥 In particular, I need toothpaste, I forgot to get that last time I was shopping on Tuesday 🛒 along with all important tumeric.

Mild and less wet weather to close out the 2023.🌤️ Saturday, a chance of showers, mainly before 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 42. West wind 7 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. New Years Eve, partly sunny, with a high near 39. New Years Day 2024 looking at 40 degrees with more sun as the day progresses. Typical average high for the weekend is 35 degrees.

I think I’ll head up to camp ⛺ early on Saturday morning as Friday looks kind of wet. Two more nights is plenty to close out the year. 🎆 Use up some of those sparklers and toast away the year as there is much to look forward to both good and bad in the 2024. And make sure to start dating things correctly. 🗓

I have zero idea on why my new smoke detector went off at 4 am 🧑‍🚒

I thought the photo electric detectors were supposed to be more reliable with fewer false triggers. There is no smoke, no cooking or showering at that hour. But it still triggered. And now I’m triggered. That was obnoxious.

Good morning! What day is it? A Wet Day, of course. Rain and 42 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☔ There is a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Sunday around noontime. ☃️ Maybe it makes it feel better to be back from Madison County. I bet it’s really wet at the Horse Camp this morning. 🌧 🏇 It’s good to be home, I guess.

Going to need the rain coat 🧥 today. Catching the local bus in this morning. 🚍 I was going to catch Things have been kind of a cluster this morning ever since getting up at 4 am this morning. I’ll survive this pseudo Monday regardless. 💈 I was going to catch the earlier express bus in to walk, 🚶‍♀️ but then I decided I needed to cut my hair and time was tight, and then I misplaced my headphones, 🎧 so I ended up missing even the later express. The local is running late too. 🕓 Isn’t that fantastic.

Black beans soup is on the stove this morning. 🍲 That’s going to be dinner tonight. Frozen vegetables 🥦, tofu, smoked paprika and nutritional yeast is going to be lunch. Getting away from rice and lentils for lunch now as lately it’s been rough on the stomach and I’m ready for a change. 🤮 Last night was a stew with turkey, carrots, celery, corn and some other things, along with flour and spices to thicken it up. Pretty good meal. Lunch was frying up the last of the onions and sweet potatoes I had before going shopping. 👨‍🍳

Today will rain likely. Cloudy 🌧, with a high of 47 degrees at 3pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 22nd. South wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 34 degrees. The record high of 60 was set in 1895. 15.0 inches of snow fell back in 1894.❄

That early smoke alarm was annoying, 👩‍🚒 not sure what triggered it — maybe the humidity as the temperature dropped in my apartment. The steam when I was taking a shower and cooking also triggered in the afternoon. I didn’t have the heat on last night as it wasn’t really cold, indeed the heated blanket actually was uncomfortable that mid-evening I turned it off. Getting up at 4 AM wasn’t so bad though as I was asleep a little after 7 PM, as I was tired after heading out camping. Skipped making bread last night 🍞 as I didn’t feel like kneading and wanted to get to bed early. 🛌 Despite my early rising, I think I got a decent night’s sleep.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:57 am with sun having an altitude of 24.1° from the due south horizon (-46.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:43 pm with the sun in the southwest (231°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (238°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:29 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 5:00 pm, which is 41 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waning Gibbous 🌖 Moon in the northeast (52°) at an altitude of 0° from the horizon, 246,322 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:37 pm. At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 47 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 7 minutes of daytime, an increase of 27 seconds over today.

Tonight will rain. 🌧 Low of 43 degrees at 8pm. 22 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 14th. Light and variable wind becoming northeast around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 22 degrees. The record low of -14 occurred back in 1951.

Tonight’s plan calls for enjoying that bean soup, 🥣 followed by kneading bread. 🍞 I forgot to get more squash so I can’t bake that while baking bread, so I might end up doing two loaves, and freezing the other one for the weekend. It’s always nice to have fresh bread up at camp, assuming that’s what ends up happening.

NYE Weekend is rapidly sliding downhill. 😕 ☔ Kind of what you’d expect 2023 to close out like. Saturday, a chance of rain and snow showers before 7am, then a chance of rain showers between 7am and 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 41. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 40. Typical average high for the weekend is 35 degrees.

Progress and a belief for a better tomorrow is the best reason to support Biden and his party 🐴

Often it seems like people cite Trump as being bad as the reason they’re supporting Biden. I would argue that’s not a good reason to support a candidate for president. Instead, one should look at the merits of each candidate, what they would do positive for our country.

I like how Biden has been pushing forward energy efficency standards, electric cars and efforts to reduce climate emissions. I would argue that’s an actual good reason to support Biden in his reelection effort. It’s important we keep moving the country forward.
