John Boyd Thacher State Park

John Boyd Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.

Daily Update – April 2, 2022

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Made it to the first weekend of April. 🌷

Cold start to the morning with that wind. I thought about heading out of town this weekend but with the wind, high water levels, mud and bright sun I decided against it.

Mostly cloudy, around the freezing point in Delmar, NY. ☁️ More sun expected later. There is a northwest breeze at 13 mph. πŸƒ. The current wind chill is 20.

Wow! Definitely a cold start to the morning. πŸŒ… The wind is howling, 🌬️I can hear it roaring against the building and just how cold it is. My heat is off but the coffee β˜• helped me warm up when I got up at six 6⃣.

I thought about an early morning walk 🚢 to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center 🐸 but I think I’ll wait until later. I’d rather go early in the day or late in the evening. Much more wildlife to see and not the gangs of small children πŸ§’. I just like listening to the Red Wing Blackbirds 🐦 and Spring Peepers 🐸.

Last night I finished watching a two hour documentary about pig 🐽 farming on Justin Rhodes homestead. I can just remember the earthy smell of the neighbors pigs. They are a good part of a diverse and healthy homestead, they bring a lot of fertility to the ground and till it up. Pork πŸ₯© and bacon πŸ₯“ are so good.

I decided next weekend I’ll either go to the transfer station β™» or camping πŸ• depending on the weather. If not next weekend, I’ll go camping the following weekend which is Good Friday slash Easter. 🐰 I’d like to get away for a few days and hopefully warm and nice enough to lay back in the hammock for a while.

Daily Update – April 1, 2022

Good morning! Happy Trout Season 🎣

River levels have to be raging after last night’s rain. But trout season isn’t a one day affair and indeed it’s April so don’t be fooled.

After last night’s heavy rain, just cloudy ☁️and 43 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 3 am. β˜ƒοΈ

It wouldn’t be a bad day for fishing 🎣 if not for the high water levels and the fact that I have to work today. Friday often is the busiest day of the year where I work. 🏒 That said most of this week has been a bit of a busy week. I guess it makes up for all of the downtime earlier on.

Last night I got home around 6 🏑 had a quick dinner 🍲 but the rain arrived before I could go for my evening walk. So I sat on the tailgate of my pick up πŸ›» and watched the rain come in before it really started to pour. Then I retired to bed around seven 7⃣. I was tired as I keep waking up earlier and earlier. I honestly thought πŸ’ it was going to be a much longer night at work.

Definitely a good rain storm last night 🌧️, probably good for a few inches of rain and lots of sewer overflows in the cities. We ended up with above average precipitation for the month of March due to the rain.

I thought about going out to Rennselearville to fish and camp over night this weekend but water levels are high, going to be windy and very sunny on Saturday. β˜€ Plus I’m thinking of going up north or maybe to Central NY either thr following weekend or maybe Easter Weekend. β›Ί

It might be another stay at home 🏑 weekend. Probably too cold to paint Big Red but that’s fine. I get tired from the work week and like to rest on Saturday. Then maybe take a walk out to Five Rivers. 🐦 Then maybe finish up my home work for the GIS class down at the library. πŸ“š

I was thinking about going to the transfer station β™» to drop off cans πŸ₯« and bottles but I might wait as I’m the about seeing if there is some garbage or e-waste that I can purge. I haven’t taken anything to the transfer station as garbage on about ten years, preferring to burn or recycle most of it with an occasional gas station garbage can. But you sometimes end up with things like broken metal chairs or a broken snow shovel that don’t fit into any of those categories nicely. It’s nice when you don’t generate much garbage but you end up with a lot of broken shit. πŸ—‘

Been researching Park and Ride lots in Schenectady and bus schedules 🚍 as that might be a convenient alternative to facing rush hour traffic getting out of the city when heading up to the Adirondacks this summer. There is that CDTA 531 express to Saint Lukes and Woodlawn Park and Ride plus the limited stop CDTA 905. 🚏I hate driving the Thruway at rush hour and while I would have to get an earlier start, most of the traffic would be going the opposite way plus I wouldn’t have to find street parking in Albany. Another possibility I saw was that CDTA is taking over or at least chartering Brown’s Amsterdam routes so I might be able to even park there. πŸ…Ώ

I don’t know about you but I’m glad April has returned. 🌷 The greening up of things is always nice as is getting out of town β›Ί and sleeping 😴 with the windows open πŸ”³. I’m sure with the rain last night and the relatively mild forecast for the week ahead it should accelerate the rate spring arrives. As much as I hate the black flies it’s nice to have nights in the wilderness by the fire with a cold beer πŸ”₯. And I’m really looking forward to laying in a lazy river with that big black truck intertube. ⚫

How to label a point in QGIS based on a vector layer below it

How to label a point in QGIS based on a vector layer below it

For example, you might have a point layer and want to label what town it is in. You might have the Census Tiger County Subdivision layer named ‘tl_2020_36_cousub20’, with the field ‘NAMELSAD20’ that you want to return from your point or polygon layer.

attribute(array_first(overlay_nearest(‘tl_2020_36_cousub20′,$currentfeature)),’NAMELSAD20’)

This will give you the nearest feature.

You need to wrap it in array_first as shown above, as overlay_nearest returns an array with one element. Then attribute just returns the attribute based on the object provided.

Alternatives include overlay_contains, overlay_crosses, overlay_intersects, overlay_touches, overlay_within which will return what you want. Try searching the QGIS Help in the QGIS Expressions builder.

You can also use this style of expression to create a spatial join or nearest neighbor join, inside the field calculator.

I’ve noticed that QGIS doesn’t always do a good job simplifying geometries when exporting to an SVG file

I’ve noticed that QGIS doesn’t always do a good job simplifying geometries when exporting to an SVG file. While you can manually simplify layers, an easier method is as follows:

1) Open Layer Styling

2) Go to Symbology

3) Switch fill to Geometry Generator

4) Use the Simplify Expression to Simplify on the Fly, such as simplifying by 100 map units, which when projected in UTM would be meters.

simplify($geometry,100)
