John Boyd Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.
Sun today and then cold rain later in evening into tomorrow. π¦
It’s like we get everything this week, although maybe not the snow of the higher elevations. Windows are open today, to dry out my clothes, but I will need to close them by evening. Still mild enough locally I don’t think it will screw up the green up much. I was noticing last night walking at 8 PM that there was still some daylight out, which was nice.

I have today off and could have stayed in bed π but I was up and going and decided to head into the office. π’ I figured that way it would be easier to get my steps in and it’s not a real nice day.
Sunny and 34 degrees at the Elm Ave Park and Ride. π Calm wind.
Maybe I should have taken today off, it’s a nice morning π but I don’t know how long the sun will last. And I would rather use the day off some point in the future for a real long-weekend in the Adirondacks. While I can’t head out of town next week due to that family obligation, I am really hoping to take off April 29th, although that might be difficult depending on the work load. It might be a very busy time around the office.
Last night I walked up Blodgett Hill, πΆβοΈ which was legally closed due to the trail being used for logging equipment, π² but I figured it didn’t matter as nobody would be logging at 7 PM on Easter Sunday. Saw a Great Blue Heron up there and a Hermit Thrush I think in the bush and a Robin. Looks like they are doing some clearing of White Pine near the Pitch Pine and on the more densely part on the other side of the hill.
Always a nice hike, good vigorous climb πͺ to the top but not that difficult with the road they built to allow for controlled burns. Maybe more views when they get done with the cut on the other side, did not fully explore it over there as I figured it would be a mess with the recent tree cutting, and time was a bit tight with the setting sun. π
Going to clear later but be cold and windy π¬οΈ
After that eighty degrees day last week, that wind seems so cold. I was up early to walk πΆ out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center but I decided it was too cold and clouded up before my coffee β was done.
We will have to watch the weather on Monday and I’m sure I’ll need the heated blanket tonight although not cold enough to warrant turning on the heat. But once I get home tonight, Big Red will probably be parked until Thursday when the Pine Bush Hike is. I’ll go shopping then too and probably have to get some gas.

Well I hope the Easter bunny doesn’t freeze off you know what today. That wind and clouds just makes it feels cold. And I could be camping in this weather. Did I mention the Adirondacks might get a half foot of snow tomorrow? Mid April π.
Cloudy and cold around 40 degrees in Delmar, NY. π«οΈ Breezy, οΈ16 mph breeze from the northwest π¬ . Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 3 am. βοΈ
Easter is late this year but spring didn’t beat it. πΈ Of course hitting eighty degrees last week on the day I was busy with work didn’t help much. Good Friday was nice but I was tired π΄ and didn’t get out to enjoy Five Rivers as much as I wanted.
Yesterday afternoon and evening absolutely poured π§οΈ so I never made it to the library π as planned but the cans and bottles β got recycled and I had a nice walk πΆ at Hollyhock. π¦ It was cold damp and windy so not a lot of birds. Tossed in a fishing π£ line for a bit.
While I took tomorrow off, π» having stayed in town this weekend I think I’ll just go into the office π’ downtown. Save the day for nicer weather, maybe in May.
Easter dinner with the folks this evening π² and then I’m thinking of hiking Blodgett Hill this evening. Officially the trail is closed due to logging but there won’t be any logging on Easter πand it would be interesting to see what trees are being cut and if the state foresters are taking steps to minimize harm. I’m hoping to see them doing more mechanical removal to reduce the fuel load and be preparing for another controlled burn of the scrub oak pitch pine ecosystem up top.
Next weekend I have a family πͺ gathering so I can’t head out of town but maybe the following weekend. Who knows after tomorrow their might be a ton of snow π¨ up north although I can’t imagine it will last. I’m hoping that last weekend of April to get out of town. βΊ
The Town of Greenville is 39 sq miles, the Bourgh of Manhattan is 33 sq miles. A few more cows in Greenville though then Manhattan.
Staten Island about the size of Altona in Clinton County at 101 square miles. A few less wind turbines in Staten Island, and far less hot air.
All of New York City would fit into the area of Town of Long Lake, Webb, or Brookhaven.
The Town of Westerlo is approximately the same size as the Borough of Bronx at 58 square miles. Yes, but do they have Dick Rapp as their town supervisor?
The biggest town area-wise in New York State is Brookhaven on Long Island at 532 sq miles. Town of Webb (Old Forge) has 483 sq miles.
The difference between the year-round population of the Town of Webb and Town of Brookhaven is about the population of Albany County at 295,000 persons.
Yonkers is about the same size as Albany, NY at 21 square miles.
The typical town in Western NY is 36 square miles and is a nice square shape. Not all though as geography sometimes over rides that nice square shape.
The largest town in Western NY is Bath, NY at 101 square miles, or about the size of Staten Island.
Owego, near Binghamton is the largest Central New York town at 101 square miles. It should not be confused with Oswego which is near Syracuse.

I was listening to NPR Fresh Air about the state of abortion in America today … π
I was very surprised to learn about how with the abortion pill that many people can get safely get an abortion just by taking a pill sent through the mail and that many states are allowing such pills to be proscribed via Telehealth, often by a low fee of $150 or even less. I think it’s a wonderful development, as it saves time, hassle and protects privacy, especially compared the old ways of doing things involving abortion clinics — an empowers women to boot.
I’m no fan of promotion of casual sexual activities or recreational sex, but I do think protecting a women’s right to make her own healthcare choices is important. Accidents occur even with protected sex and contraception, and sometimes not realized right away. We’ve had for decades birth control pills, as the country music singer Loretta Lynn made famous in late 1960s. Having medicine that can undo a mistake, with minimal harm to woman is such a liberating thing, that should be widely available even without a prescription at neighborhood pharmacies and grocery stores. We shouldn’t be afraid of progress.
