John Boyd Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.
We can ignore the threat of winter for now but it’s certainly coming and come Sunday the evenings will be dark. But observing the sun this morning I’m fairly sure that the morning walk will be possible again, even at 6:15 for the first few weeks after the time change.

Good morning! Day by Day. Happy first Wednesday of November ðĶ
Day by day Oh, Dear Lord Three things I pray To see thee more clearly Love thee more dearly Follow thee more nearly Day by day
Partly sunny and 51 degrees in Bethlehem, NY. ð There is a north-northwest breeze at 5 mph. ð. The dew point is 48 degrees.
It’s weird to be talking about the dew point or fifty degree weather in November ð but it’s an extraordinarily nice morning that is only expected to get more pleasant as the week progresses into the weekend.
The Federal Reserve plans to meet today ðĩ pushing up interest rate another three quarters point. The stock market was down in anticipation though is anybody really surprised? Hopefully they’ll break the back of old inflation but I’m not hopeful. It’s just so obnoxious how every week I invest money ðļ I watch as the balances go down even while the shares increase.
Gas prices are back above $4 a gallon â― again locally as oil supplies continue to tighten. Natural gas and electricity prices are back up too, they were talking about it on the news ð°. I’m glad I fixed the air leaks around the door ðŠ and have the electric blanket to stay warm at night. And that it looks like at least a few more weeks until it gets cold â out.
Veterans Day Weekend ðŠ I’d like to get away to Cazenovia but it depends on the weather. Rising gas prices might put a damper on that and how much groaning and creaking my old truck makes. ðŧ Then I might do some ski ðŋ and winter camping ð trips to Rensselaerville State Forest or Cole Hill depending on how cold and snowy â it is.
Rain today, then clearing and mild going forward for a while ð§ âĄïļ ð
I am not complaining about the mild weather. I have the windows open and are enjoying the fresh air. Maybe not a ton of sun for the weekend, but still very mild. And then we loose that hour in the evening, but I will sure enjoy when the mornings are more sunny once again. And a weekend in the 70s in November. No complaints on that front for sure.
Today. Feels like … October 7th.
Scattered showers, mainly between noon and 5pm. Mostly cloudy.
Light southwest wind. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
I like November especially if it’s free of snow and road salt. GIS Month, elections come and mostly go away, a lot of paid holidays and Thanksgiving. Cheesy Christmas music.
Rain and 57 degrees at the Exit 23 – Albany (I-787). â Calm wind. The dew point is 55 degrees. The skies will clear around 6 pm.
Traffic is moving a bit slow ððŧððð on the Southern Boulevard due to the rain and people learning how to drive in it and the express bus is a bit late as the driver had to do the school ðļ run first. But it’s not raining hard so I walked laps in the the parking ð ŋ lot waiting for the earlier express bus which was only eight minutes late and the driver entered in the correct block number ðĒ so I could watch him approach.
Looking forward to the time change ð when I once again can walk ðķ in the morning in Delmar before work at 6:45. While it will get darker come December in the morning I’d rather walk closer home than the Plaza. ðĄ It’s an easier walk, ðĢ and I get more steps in and no homeless people to yell at you for walking past them more then one. ð
Started to work on the 30 Day Map Challenge. ðš I don’t know if I will participate all 30 days but it will be a fun way to improve my ability to make maps and plot data in R. I think there is a lot of interesting possibilities for maps, especially if I’m forced to come up with new concepts every day.
Thought about Early Voting ðģ yesterday, as the line was short but I think I will wait until later on Election Day to vote, just because I’m undecided.
It looks like the red wave will be with us at least as far as mercury is considered. ðĄ I can’t complain about that one bit, although I know when it gets cold, it will get cold. I am still thinking a blizzard for Thanksgiving. â
As the bus slowly departs the station as the driver sips his coffee. It is a pleasant end to the month of October which ended most pleasantly.
Partly sunny and 43 degrees at the Elm Ave Park and Ride. ð Calm wind. And like that, we depart the station ð right on time.
It was to get away for a couple of days âš even if it was just Rennselearville State Forest. I know winter is coming with gas prices heading back up and such trips will be more infrequent but it was a break from the craziness of urban life. ðĪŠ
Walking the Plaza early this morning ðķ trying to get my steps ðĢ in earlier as I’m not sure if I will walk this evening with Halloween ðĶ but I do want to make sure I get the 10k in for the day regardless.
The state is busy setting up the ice rink âļ for the opening around Thanksgiving ðĶ and the holiday season. ð ð I have to admit I listened to a track from a Christmas record the other day when I was feeling so sick ðĪŪ. Seasons come and go so quickly these days, ðļ spring will be here before you know it or so I tell myself.
Last week going to work before the time change. ð More sunlight in the morning will be nice but not the very dark evening commute, especially the walk home in the dark. But next week is a three day work week with the Lunar Eclipse ð holiday on Tuesday and Veterans Day ðŠ on Friday.
So far it’s been a relatively quiet morning ð§, the emails, texts and phone calls with projects have yet to roll ðĨ in. I have a list ð from the weekend but it’s only so long. Maybe though after my sick day on Friday there is a bunch of things I don’t know about.
Depending on how busy I am next week and the weather â that will decide if I do a trip out of town for Veterans Day Weekend. I have surprisingly little vacation time left this year after I sell back a bunch of time to pay for my health insurance. ð·
Lots of sunny days and mild to start out November ð
On the warmer side for Halloween ðĶ which the kiddies will like ðŽ with rain â showers later. Tuesday is the only less than great day but it still will be quite mild. Weekend looks mild but I am thinking it will be cloudier â and maybe wetter then what they are suggesting right now. I don’t see any freezing weather or snow ðĻ in the near future. That said, we are continuing to loose daylight and things are very much heading towards the time change ð next week.
