John Boyd Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.
It’s cold. I fully expect tonight I’m going to have to turn on the central heat and run to the grocery store before the salt spreaders are out on Tuesday.
Mostly sunny and 31 degrees in Delmar, NY. β There is a northwest breeze at 7 mph. π. Things will start to thaw out at around 7 am. π‘οΈ
Out walking at 6:30 this morning. π Cold start to the morning, my hands π feel the sting of the cold but at warming up. I still wanted to get out early, as I’d much rather walk in Delmar then Albany, and plus I get more steps in early, then if I don’t get out for the evening walk because it’s cold or I’m busy, I still have my steps in for the day.
I would like to get to the store π¬ tonight before the ice β and road salt tomorrow. I don’t need groceries yet but the things I will buy should last a few weeks especially if unopened. I buy a lot of frozen things as it minimizes the amount of waste π I produce especially with rates going up at the transfer station β» and not having as many fires π₯ in the winter time for burnables. Past few milk and juice bottles, I’ve been washing them out for recycling. Tomorrow is after all, National Recycling Day. But also, I need to pack a lunch every day for work, as the days of free lunches at work during the fall have come and gone.
I finally got to turn on the heat tonight I’m afraid. π‘ It looks like it will be in the lower 20s by morning, and that’s both too cold for both the pipes and my comfort. While I’m happy if my apartment is above 50 degrees, with the cold I’m sure it won’t last too long, though at this point I’ll probably keep my heat at the lowest setting until the real cold comes. If I’m cold I have my heated blanket out and that little space heater, which I run only about 20 hours a winter, mostly to warm up my hands.
I am thinking probably this weekend I will stay in town, π but maybe after Thanksgiving on Black Friday through early the next week head out of town. Maybe out to the Adirondacks. β° A lot depends on the weather, how much snow is up north, and how cold and cloudy βοΈ it may be. Winter can pose a problem for heading up north, and while it’s been late, they may get several inches of snow, depending on where you are in the Adirondacks. Plus many of the campsites may already be taken by hunters.
Once winter comes and rifle season is done, I’ll probably do skiing at Rensselaerville State Forest. πΏ It’s close to home, and that road is open year around, so if I bring a shovel I can certainly camp there and ski on winter weekends when it’s not too cold out.
America is likely to remain blue for a few more days. That said, my meteorologist friend, who actually made a career of studying shit like this says that we are due for warm up by the end of the month. I’ll believe it when I see it, though. Winter is coming, though the really cold winters don’t seem to stick around like they one did.
Or has it just arrived? I don’t know but it’s much too cold and gray today up here on Bennett Hill. And the sun is setting much too early this time of year.

Good afternoon! Happy Saturday on this Veterans Day Weekend π
Cloudy and 57 degrees at the Bethlehem Library. βοΈ There is a west-northwest breeze at 11 mph. π with gusts up to 23 mph π¨π¨π¨. The dew point is 48 degrees. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Monday around 2 am. βοΈ
Yesterday afternoon it rained and rained some more. π§ It was from the hurricane. Kept me from heading out of town this weekend. But that’s fine, I needed a quiet day on Saturday.
Went down to the park for a while yesterday, πΆβοΈ but didn’t want to get too far from home and get poured on. As when the rain came, it came. I ended up taking a nap last night and watching some Youtube videos on my phone. I’ve just been recovering from the week that was.
While I should do this more frequently, I finally checked www.annualcreditreport.com, which is the US government’s authorized way to getting your annual credit report for free. No surprises here, but I have to admit I hadn’t checked it in quite a while.
I probably should check it more often – one of my credit cards I’ve had for years was closed last month due to inactivity. Which is fine, but it’s kind of good to know before I tried to use it somewhere. I don’t remember the bank notifying me about the closed account. Which means I now have less credit then probably most dogs in America, and while credit score is in the shitter because I told the bank to give me low credit limit far below was authorized, but I don’t care as I rarely buy things.
I should be more careful. One of my bank accounts passwords were hacked a while back (but stopped by two-way authentication and a call from the bank), and I had that issue with that gun that I tried to buy a few years back at a famously anti-second amendment Big Box retailer that is locally all around and famously shitty to do business. I was denied because I was told that I had previously tried to purchase it somewhere else as labeled a Straw Buyer in NICS over the transaction. I never got any answers on that from the store or the police department, but I think the clerk just entered the wrong store number. Yeah, I’m still bitter about that one.
