Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.
A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.
In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

So the kayak is on the roof of my truck, and the dry goods are packed in the truck. Still working on packing the clothes and getting some of the other gear ready, but a lot of that can be done in the morning. The truck is all gassed up but I will need to stop either in the morning or on the way up to camp to buy firewood as I expect to be setting up close to dusk or maybe even after dark. I just rain to Stewart’s for milk but didn’t buy firewood because I didn’t want to have to carry it home. I do need to load the persishables, sweep the floor and take out the garbage before I go. That’s fine though, as I will have the electric cords up where I can quickly plug them in and light the campsite once I find a site to camp at.
I am very excited about exploring Moss Island on Saturday. I confirmed that the canal will still be open so I won’t have to worry about low water levels. I probably will hike Moss Island first then put in at the boat launch, and paddle around it. I’m undecided if I am going to go through a lock or not. My feeling is based on how short the days are, I probably won’t, but I might paddle downstream a short distance from Little Falls down by Finks Basin, and then up towards the falls. I hope to get some interesting video and picutres, especially now that I found my big camera once again.
Up on Piseco-Powley Road I’m hoping to get either the bridge site or better yet the site up in the plains. I am thinking with hunting season not really under way and with summer over, there will be a lot less people up there, but who knows with the nice weather. I mean, how often do you have 85 degree weather in mid-September? I’m glad we are finally going to get summer, now that September has rolled around, and that I have my kayak paddle so I can get back out on the water.
I do need to get back to Albany relatively early on Sunday, so I won’t have a lot of time to dilly dally around at the potholers. But if I get an early start, I should have enough time to enjoy my day, and enjoy those wonderful cold waters before winter fully kicks in and it’s too cold and the road is closed due to snow.
I wonder how much fall color I will see while I am up there. I heard on Facebook that there is already quite a bit of color, even if the maps put out by the state tourism bureau suggest elsewise. It turns out with the cool nights, that colors are popping out, even if this weekend is expected to be quite warm. I might go to Moose River Plains next weekend if the colors are nice. It will depend on the weather and what kind of family obligations I have. I might go the following week, otherwise. I probably will take off a day or two for a long weekend up at Moose River Plains.
I picked up a little Bluetooth Keyboard to use with my cellphone for typing longer blogposts. At first it took a while to get used to, and I’m not sure it really saves that much time over using the on screen keyboard, but it was only $20. I had originally planned on using my wireless keyboard with the dongle and the usb on the go adapter I bought, but I found that didn’t work right with my phone. But the Bluetooth keyboard works fine.I probably could have ordered the same thing for a bit cheaper online, but I wasn’t sure if it would work with my phone, for I figured with Walmart I could always return it if I couldn’t get it to work right. Works fine, but the keyboard layout is slightly different form my laptop, so it took a while to master. It is a bit lagging at times with the screen but I may be able to fix that by playing with the the settings a bit more.
Filled up the windshield Reservior and topped off the oil I my truck. I have plenty of gas now, so I should be ready for a good weekend adventure. I think I will take my contacts out shortly and retire to bed.
In four weeks on October 12 the sun will be setting at 6:16 pm, which is 48 minutes and 51 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2016 on that day, we had partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 67 and 47 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 61 and 41 degrees. The record high of 85 degrees was set back in 1954.
Looking ahead, Autumn Begins is Next Friday and Average High is 40 is in 2 months.
The new paddle may be green, but it's well balanced and lightweight, and I only spent $3 after the sale and credit card rewards, so I'm not complaining.

This morning’s weather reminds me a lot of that tragic day now sixteen years ago when I watched the planes hit the World Trade Center in my freshman statistics class. It seems remarkable that it was sixteen years ago. It was such a sunny but cool day much like today. 56 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind.
That was really quite the day.Β Just remember seeing those planes hit the building, calling mom at work, leaving college early, and going up to Partridge Run, with the tranquility and eerie silence of a sky without planes. It was a nice, but quiet walk that afternoon. Sitting in that blue 1994 Plymouth Sundance, listening to the news.
I have to say back in 2001, it was a very different New York, both Upstate and Down.Β I was a very different person, we were still the old gritty New York to a great extent. Somehow, September 11th changed a lot in our state and our country. I do to a certain extent miss those good ole days, I really enjoyed my time at Hudson Valley Community College. That said, it’s also kind of fun to be an adult and have money to buy the toys you want and be able to travel and explore.
I was a running a bit late for the express bus, but I hurried and made it.Β I was making good time this morning, despite having to go Stewart’s for milk, because I realized I should get my American flag up before I leave to walk down to the express bus. Such a beautiful day to be remembering that tragic day. But I made it in perfect time, and made it downtown promptly on bus. I like getting into the office early, as it makes the mornings much less rushed. Plus taking the local every day, can be a bit of a drag.
Today will be sunny, with a high of 76 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 51 at 6pm. Calm wind becoming northwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. Going to be a beautiful late summer day. A year ago, we had mostly cloudy skies with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 77 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1931.
The sun will set at 7:11 pm with dusk around 7:39 pm, which is one minute and 46 seconds earlier than yesterday. At sunset, look for clear conditions and 68 degrees. The dew point will be 52 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 39 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low of 49 degrees at 5am. Four degrees below normal. Light west wind. In 2016, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 49 degrees. The record low of 36 occurred back in 1875. Might be nice for sitting back with a cold one after work, especially once the sun sets, assuming of course that you wear a sweater or a vest.
It was aΒ pretty nice weekend in my opinion,Β I got what needed to be done and got out for a paddle for a while on Thompson’s Lake. The lake was pretty quiet, nobody was on it except for a few kayaks and canoes, as the main boat launch off of NY 157 was closed due to the state rebuilding the boat launch. I ended up putting in at Emma Treadwell Nature Center, and spent a little time fishing without many bites in the lake. I didn’t spend much time fishing though, and my time was limited at the lake.
I also got everything done I wanted to get done,Β including some cleaning in the apartment, getting that relay for CB radio hooked up (which works great), filling the propane tank, and getting things ready for my next adventure. It might have been an excellent weekend to go camping, and indeed next weekend doesn’t look all that great, but I’m sure there are many autumn weekends still ahead before the snow.
Looking ahead, there are 2 weeks until More Night Then Day in Albany when the sun will be setting at 6:46 pm with dusk at 7:14 pm. On that day in 2016, we had mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 67 and 38 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 68 degrees. We hit a record high of 89 back in 1970.
Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Two weeks to Autumn Begins. That said, it’s already cool and gray enough to feel like autumn. Mostly cloudy with some clearing to the east and 53 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south-southwest breeze at 6 mph. The dew point is 49 degrees. The skies will clear around 7 pm.
Taking another big articulated bus downtown from the Park and Ride. It seems a bit silly but I’m sure the driver also runs the 12 past the college at rush hour but it still seems silly to use such a big bus for so few passengers. I guess on the highway the fuel economy isn’t as bad. That said, it does have a rather rough ride. The acceleration and braking is really smooth but the truck and trailer design means you don’t have the nice air suspension of a regular bus. I’m sure the driver though is enjoying the bonus he gets for driving the big bus. Its a couple bucks extra an hour and it adds up.
Today will be scattered showers, with thunderstorms also possible after noon. Some of the storms could produce small hail. Mostly cloudy, with a high of 66 degrees at 2pm. Nine degrees below normal. Maximum dew point of 52 at 11am. South wind 6 to 11 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Definitely an early autumn day today. A year ago, we had mostly cloudy skies, clearing in the afternoon. It was very sticky. The high last year was 89 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 2015.
The sun will set at 7:16 pm with dusk around 7:44 pm, which is one minute and 45 seconds earlier than yesterday. At sunset, look for partly cloudy conditions and 61 degrees. The dew point will be 50 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 47 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 49 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will have isolated showers before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low of 49 degrees at 5am. Five degrees below normal. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2016, we had mostly cloudy skies. It was very sticky. It got down to 69 degrees. The record low of 36 occurred back in 1938.
This weekend I have to wire up the relay for the CB radio and get the kayak rack back on the truck so I can do some paddling and fishing, probably on Sunday at the Thacher Park.
As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Autumn Begins when the sun will be setting at 6:51 pm with dusk at 7:19 pm. On that day in 2016, we had mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 82 and 53 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 70 degrees. We hit a record high of 95 back in 1895.
