Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

October 23, 2017 8 AM Update

54 degrees with increasing clouds now. It looks like today will be cloudy but rather mild once again with the mercury pushing 70 or maybe breaking it in the city. Already the once very sunny once it rose morning is turning to clouds. It’s back to work in a work that seems so less rugged and more hustled than the back country of West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Albany seems so domesticated and busy compared to the land I’ve spent my past week in. Much more color too.

The sun will set at 5:59 pm with dusk around 6:28 pm, which is one minute and 29 seconds earlier than yesterday. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy conditions and 67 degrees. The dew point will be 59 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 40 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 42 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly after 11pm. Cloudy, with a low of 63 degrees at 9pm. 26 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 61 at 2am. South wind 10 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2016, we had mostly clear skies with more clouds in the early hours of the next day. It got down to 42 degrees. The record low of 16 occurred back in 1969.

Wednesday morning I have my dental cleaning appointment so I will be in the office late a bit that day. I still have to tell my supervisor but I don’t think it will be a big deal. It’s good to do more to maintain my teeth.

Today in 1973, President Richard M. Nixon agrees to turn over subpoenaed audio tapes of his Oval Office conversations. Happy Watergate Day if you can say that. I guess us democrats were happy about that but the whole affair was a blot on our country, even though many of the things Nixon did look like child play compared to the TRUMP.

There is one month until Thanksgiving when the sun will be setting at 4:26 pm with dusk at 4:57 pm (Standard Time). The average high temperature is 57 degrees, with a record high of 81 in 1947.

Road Trip Dilema

So based on the latest forecast, I face a bit of a dilema when it comes to my multi-state road trip that was originally planning to go down to Pennsylvania to West Virigina to Virigina and travel along a ways of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The problem I face is the forecast is expected to be quite bad for the first half of next week due to Tropical Storm Nate which is expected to drop as much as 2 inches of rain on West Virigina between Sunday and Wednesday — mostly on Monday but a front will keep the skies cloudy and possibly somewhat damp through Wednesday. I camped out too many cold and wet days over the summer into the fall, and I”m hardly excited to repeat that again.

I have two options for the week. The first is I could try to postpone the trip for a week. That might work fairly well, but it’s also a gamble. The third week of October is often much cooler then the second week, and the risk of unexpected snow storms, especially in the most rugged part of West Viriginia where I am planning on going increaes. No guarantees of better weather next week either. Plus the following week I don’t have Columbus Day Weekend off, so I would have to use an extra vacation day.

The second option is just to carry on my trip as planned, and expect a very wet period to startout the trip. Monday would be wasted and maybe Tuesday and Wednesday might not be perfect, but maybe it will be less rainy and cloudy as predicted. Of course that’s a gamble, remember I took a summer vacation when it rained nearly every day.

The third option is to change my trip plans all together to a different part of the state/country. I could do another trip out to Western NY, spend some time exploring and camping at various state forests in Allegany and Cattaargus County. Except for Monday, the forecast out in Western NY looks pretty good. Maybe later in the week head down to Allegheny National Forest then south for a night at Hicks Run Campground in Elk Country. That might be pretty in autumn to see and hear the elk out in their rut. I would have to reach out the DCNR and have them email me a camping permit or maybe stop by their regional office. But that could be done. Alternatively or maybe afterwards, I could go south almost to West Virigina and camp at Ohiopyle State Park. I’ve always been interested in that park, ever since a hunter I ran into last autumn was telling me how beautiful it was. And then maybe a night or two in West Virigina? I mean if I’m driving home, assuming I have enough energy, I could drive all the way back to Albany in one day, but that would be tiring, and I worry about dozing off at the wheel. I guess I could overnight again at Aspah Run or County Bridge campgrounds outside of Wellsboro — as I had originally planned.

I have options. Now just to pick one. Soon. As I have to pack tomorrow night if I’m planning on leaving for next week.

September 26, 2017 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 72 degrees in Delmar. There is a south breeze at 5 mph. The dew point is 67 degrees. Certainly not a pleasant evening, at least outside of air conditioned buildings. This is like the worse of summer weather, which we only had a few nights of earlier this summer. The muggy weather ends Thursday around 3 am. And more likely then not, that will be it until 2018. But who knows as this year goes on with this crazy warm spell and a changing climate that pushes the jet stream to the extreme north or south in America.

Went grocery shopping this evening and to the laundry mat. Sat out back for a while, then went back insider as I needed to charge my phone, and honestly I prefer to use my phone with my bluethooth mouse and keyboard. Much faster and easier to use that trying to hit buttons on the touch screen with my big fat fingers.

Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low of 65 degrees at 4am. 17 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 10pm. South wind around 5 mph becoming calm after midnight. Not much relief from the heat and humidty there. In 2016, we had mostly cloudy skies. It got down to 52 degrees. The record low of 24 occurred back in 1947.

The First Quarter Moon will be tomorrow with isolated t-storms then isolated showers. The Hunter Moon is on Thursday, October 5th. The sun will rise at 6:48 am with the first light at 6:20 am, which is one minute and 6 seconds later than yesterday. Tonight will have 12 hours and 4 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny and still quite hot and humid, with a high of 85 degrees at 3pm. 21 degrees above normal. Yeap, that’s hot for late September. Maximum dew point of 67 at 10am. Humid too.  Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies. The high last year was 72 degrees. The record high of 84 was set in 1998.

A fairly typical early October weekend on tap. Much cooler but sunny. Saturday, a chance of showers before 8am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 62. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 42 at 6am. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 66. Maximum dew point of 42 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 66 degrees.

In four weeks on October 24 the sun will be setting at 5:58 pm, which is 46 minutes and 8 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2016 on that day, we had rain, mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 52 and 42 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 57 and 37 degrees. The record high of 74 degrees was set back in 1973.

Looking ahead, 6:30 PM Sunset is Next Tuesday, Coldest Day of Year (Avg. 14-30 degrees) is in 15 weeks and Inaugeration Day 2021 is in 173 weeks.

I think I am going to retire to bed now, and then sit by the fan and listen to a podcast. Good night!

Delmar Under Construction

The Town of Bethlehem is replacing the local sewer and water lines and fixing up the Delmar streetscape, but for now it's a complete mess.
