Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

July 24, 2015 morning

Good morning, Happy Friday. 64 degrees and sunny this morning. Looks like it’s going to be another hot one this weekend. Today also is expected to get quite muggy, look for 81 degrees and chance of thunderstorms later.

Tommorow by this time, hopefully I will be well on my way to the Finger Lakes. Looks like nice weather. I’m not going to rush and will stop along scenic vistas along the way.

Have a great day!

July 22, 2015 evening

71 degrees and clear this evening. Going to be a chilly one with temperatures likely to drop to the low 50s. Further evidence that summer will be over before it really began. Tommorow will continue being pleasant, around 80.

Next door neighbors have a pretty big bonfire tonight, although I think their just mostly burning off scrap wood. Smells like pine for the most part. Despite being pretty bright, they’re mostly behaving like good suburbanites.

Next week’s forecast looks pretty good for vacation. I have decided that I will leave early Saturday and overnight Saturday night at Long Pond in Smithville Flats. Probably take some roads I’ve never been over in the Western Catskills. That leaves me less than an hour away from Ithaca.

Probably visit Buttermilk Falls on Sunday and camp at the Finger Lakes National Forest through midweek, each day visiting a different gorge. Figure get a better campsite on a Sunday evening. Then head west to Stony Brook State Park and the Bully Hill State Forest in Allegany County to camp. Then down to Pennsylvania and Presque Isle for the balance of the week.

July 21, 2015 morning

Good morning on this Tuesday. Right now we are at 71 degrees in Delmar with mostly cloudy skies. 88 degrees and fairly sticky later. Expect thunderstorms and possible downpours later.

July 20, 2015 evening

At the 10 o’clock hour we are looking at 69 degrees with stars mostly crowded out by the clouds. Dewpoint is a bit higher than expected at 65 and without a breeze, making it feel more muggy then one would expect. I think the dewpoint was lower at 5 pm and there was a bit of a breeze kicked up by the solar radiation.

For tommorow, the heat returns full blast with temperatures pushing 90 and while it will be muggy, no oppressive heat in Albany like they had on Sunday. Look for dewpoints in the mid-60s. Thunderstorms with the heat are expected in the afternoon and they could bring some downpours. Nicer for Hump Day with sun and a dry, fall like warmth in the 80s dewpoints expected to be a comfortable mid-50s.

Tommorow I’m going to ask for next week off. Schedule wise it looks good for work. The long range looks nice for next weekend but there always is the possibility of a tropical storm working it’s way north, especially as we start to get into hurricane season in August. I can try to pick the perfect week for a camping trip but long range forecasts are unpredictable.

In years past I would spend a lot of time planning and thinking about my week long summer trip. But it seems like I pretty much know where I’m going and most of the gear is the same as I use on weekends trips. At least the first few days of my trip I will spend between Watkins Glen and Ithaca, which both grocery stores and Walmart, so I don’t really need to pack a week’s worth of food. I do want to clean up the kitchen good before I leave, go to the laundromat, and get some books from the library. My smartphone nowadays has all the maps I need.

Part of the reason I want to take the trip sooner than later is the days are already getting shorter, and the hottest days of summer are soon past us. Sunset tonight was 8:27 p.m. and that’s a full ten minute loss since the end of June. I will gain 15 minutes daylight in the evening by the time I reach Western Pennsylvania, but still it’s quickly sliding towards autumn. I want to make some other trips before the fall season comes around.

Frogs are singing their song. Enjoying a cold glass of water. I much prefer the city water to the hard mineral water I grew up with at my parents house. Yet I well aware of what is coming, so I figured I best enjoy every summer evening that remains. I haven’t seen any bats, which sucks because the bugs are fairly fierce tonight.

July 16, 2015 morning

Good morning, Happy Thursday. 61 degrees with blue skies and a dewpoint of 51. A beautiful summer day. We are looking forward to 80 degrees and a dewpoint unlikely to climb above 60 or so.

Listening to Mungo Jerry’s In the Summertime wishing I was up in the woods today. There is a ton of traffic near Delaware Ave and Cherry Ave. I guess a lot of people are getting out and enjoying this summer weather. Lucky them.

Tonight I have to get packed for the Adirondacks. It’s going to be a hot weekend but a nice one. Off to the Potholers again and probably paddle Big Bay and do some fishing. Better to get out and enjoy summer before it comes to an end.  I probably won’t camp at Powley Place Bridge, but I might too. I do like standing on that bridge with a cold one, looking at the stars. Thunderstorms and heat and humidity are predicted for the weekend but that’s to be expected mid-summer.
