Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

July 15, 2015 evening

64 degrees with some haze over the stars. Still quite a few fireflies out on this summer evening. 80 degrees tommorow with low humidity.

Today was a long and crazy day at work, but I’ve been around long enough to know those days happen a few times a month. I survived and on to a new day.

Went down to the Park and spent some time reading. While I was there, I discovered the pool complex has an open network called “Free Library WiFi”. While the network name is sketchy, it clearly is broadcasting from the pool complex and it works pretty well anywhere nearby. Saves on phone bandwidth and allows me to get podcasts to my phone. I could browse video and websites without worrying and quickly. My phone has 5 gigs of bandwidth now but with so many open hotspots it seems almost excessive. And no, I’m not thinking of having Internet at home. Verizon and Time Warner, you can stop sending me glossy flyers that don’t even burn well.

I’ve noticed it seems like the evening are getting a bit shorter now, even if it’s really only minutes. But come August, those evening sunlight will be dropping fast. Always remarkable how quickly the long evenings dissappear. Without the humidity this evening, it almost felt fall like. The dewpoint at 10 p.m. is only 52. Pleasant.

Tommorow is get packed for another summer weekend in the Adirondacks. It seems like I was just up in the woods but it’s going to be another hot weekend and I’d rather keep my feet put in the Potholers and enjoy a nice fire in the evening.

I’m thinking of taking the last week of July off for vacation. I don’t have a serious plan for it but everybody is taking vacation and except for a few days I’ve been stuck in the office. The days are getting shorter and if I wait until mid-August or later, I will be cutting into my days to get back to camp before getting too dark. Still a lot of trips I want to make but they are mostly long weekends.

July 14, 2015 morning

Cloudy and 65 degrees this morning. A bit humid with dewpoints creeping up, right now it’s 64. Later, 83 and cloudy with hazy, hot, humid weather. Thunderstorms and downpours possible.

July 13, 2015 early evening

I don’t know if the heat bothers me less in my thirties then when I was younger, but despite warnings this evening doesn’t seem that oppressive.

Warm and a bit sticky but not oppressive with the breeze.  Mercury says 78 degrees and a 66 dewpoint but I’m not feeling it down at Elm Avenue Park.

July 9, 2015 evening

Heavy rain and 67 this evening. Got soaked loading the kayak on the roof of my pickup this evening. Despite the heavy rain, I had to get as packed as possible for my trip to the Adirondacks tomorrow, as I have to be to work early tomorrow for a client meeting. I got soaked loading up the kayak.

In the next hour the rain is expected to clear out and dry weather will prevail for the weekend. It will be in the mid to upper 80s in the city this weekend and maybe upper 70s up in the Adirondacks. Not humid weather but actually quite nice. Those Potholers will feel nice, although water levels will likely be high.

Have a great evening, sleep well.

July 9, 2015 morning

Unsettled weather continues this morning and we are expecting up to an inch of rain before the day concludes. 78 degrees later.

The weekend forecast looks pretty good after we get through today.
