Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.
A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.
In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.
Blue skies and 63 degrees on this beautiful Friday morning. Later we are looking at 78 degrees and continued pleasant conditions.
Later this evening I’m planning on heading down to the Hudson River to do some fishing. I also am going to order and pick up a 64 gigabyte Micro SD card for my phone. They’re $30 ordered online from Walmart. Ever since I took the failed SD card out on Tuesday, my phone has worked perfectly. I don’t know what caused the card to lock in read only mode but clearly it’s malfunctioning on both my phone and the two computers I plugged it in. The old card was 32 gigs which really was small with the music, podcasts and photos.
Thinking about heading back to the Finger Lakes for the second to last week of August. I was orginally thinking about heading up to Lewis County but I sure enjoyed the Watkins Glen pool. I have that long four day weekend off and I guess I could extend it by another day if necessary.
Labor Day Weekend probably heading up Pisceo Powley Road, as I think I will stop by the sportsmen or maybe it was a trappers convention in Little Falls or Herkimer. I better research it better before I head up there. I just remember there was a reason to head up that way.
65 degrees and high clouds kind of shading out the stars. Getting down to 56 tonight. Spring peepers and and crickets are singing but no fireflies to report on tonight. A pleasant evening.
Went down to the Park and started to read a new book I got out of the library called Gun Guys. Kind of a book written by an urban liberal who falls love with guns. It gets dark early, so I brought my laptop down there and played on it until 9:15 pm after too dark to read. It’s nice having WiFi at the park. Will come in handy on Saturday when the library closes a 5 pm.
This weekend staying in town. Probably Hudson River fishing on Friday night. Doing an oil change on Saturday and plan to figure out which of the electrical connections ain’t working in the fuse holder. Something ain’t right because the second battery ain’t charging. Also need to fix the truck cap support. Hopefully next weekend will head out of town if the weather is nice.
Took off August 20-23rd to head up to the Otter Creek area of the Western Adirondacks. Want to spend more time exploring some of the trails up there, the Whetstone Gulf and the Whetstone Reservoir. Should be a nice weekend. Next weekend maybe is Schoharie and swimming at Mine Kill State Park swimming pool.
Started researching jobs, apartments, land, and recreation in Scranton PA. I have been thinking on and off about moving to Pennsylvania where they have better gun laws, lower taxes, and a less anti-rural culture. PA allows open carry and concealed carry licenses is reasonable to obtain. No special permits for handguns besides the normal background check. They seem to leave homesteaders and farmers alone unlike NY were Humane Society is crawling up folks asses. Lots of backcountry land up that way if you don’t mind abandoned clum piles. Open burning within reason is allowed in most rural areas as long as it’s not too much a nuisance.
I have been evaluating Pennsylvania cities for some time, and while Harrisburg was at one time top of my list, Erie and Scranton have risen on my list as I would rather live in a smaller more rural area that is less political than Albany. In some ways Erie has better recreation opportunities as closer to Allegheny National Forest but Scranton is closer to where I live now for further evaluation and ease of move and jobs. Potter County and Coudersport would be cool but I think good jobs in small towns are even harder to find.
Land prices around Scranton are much cheaper, which makes owning land more practical. My goal is eventually live off grid or at least have enough land to shoot guns out back, have fires and burn things, and hobby farm. Scranton keeps the wild Western Catskills and Tioga County PA region fairly close plus the Delaware Water Gap. I don’t have a job yet and have only started my research. But looking at job postings. And I haven’t been to the city to see what it’s really like but I have been studying maps carefully. Probably not making the jump this year but might take a day trip or two and interview for a few jobs.
Good evening. Currently 73 degrees with a strong thunderstorm with heavy rain coming through. Looking for another round of thunderstorms later, with a low of 65. Tomorrow will be about 78 degrees and without as many thunderstorms.
Yesterday, I came back from Pennsylvania.Β It was a long trip back but a nice one, as I planned the timing perfectly, and clocked into Delmar at 5:15 PM. I left at 8 AM but I stopped several times for pictures, for breakfast and lunch, and for a short hike at Leonard Harrison State Park (Grand Canyon of PA).
Today was back to work again but at least it was a relatively quiet day at work. Tired, off to bed now.
Good morning. Currently 70 degrees and sunny now that the fog has burnt off. Later 80 degrees humid and thunderstorms in Smithville Flats. More clouds later. Have a great day. I’m leaving for vacation!
Good evening. 64 degrees and fairly sticky with some good stars. A pretty nice Friday. The weekend will be nice but rather hot and humid with thunderstorms. Not many fireflies tonight because it’s too cool for their liking. I did see a bat aka a mosquito vacuum cleaner earlier.
Tommorow it’s off to Long Pond State Forest and then Sunday it’s the Finger Lakes. Fishing Saturday. Probably visit Buttermilk Falls and swim there on Sunday. I did my wash and packed it. Bought enough food for one night – will buy more out in Ithaca on Sunday. Water containers are full. Table and regular camping supplies are in the truck. Which reminds me I need to get the Dutch Oven out from upstairs. Need to pack cold food in the morning along with personal supplies.
I checked the fluids on my truck and they are all good and I’ve been driving around with the windows and radio off to check for any signs of problems. Also stuck my head under the hood with engine running, and all seems normal. Every noise worries me because it would suck to get stranded in the Finger Lakes or Pennsylvania. I’m paranoid. Everything is fine. The truck is only four years old so it should be fine.
Should be a nice week. I will post photos and updates throughout, along with interesting new content and some twice reheated content.
