Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

August 22, 2015 evening

Good evening. 65 degrees this evening and clear. Partly sunny tommorow and 82 as this nice strech of weather continues.

Still achy and sore from the sprained ankle. Not much has changed. Been really tired too. Maybe it’s because of the difficulty walking around and the constant lifting of my body by my arms and one leg. Maybe it’s Lyme Disease, I don’t know. Mom is always telling me I should get tested for Lyme. Spent most of the day in bed, first working on maps, then resting, then reading. I still dread the shower because I have to take the sprain boot off and regardless of what I do to not load the bad ankle, it still hurts like a mother at times.

Ended up going to Walmart to buy fishing hooks and ended up grocery shopping a because I was up and it’s getting in my jacked up truck that still hurts more than anything – especially if I’m not real careful to lift myself with my arms and the cruch both in and out. The grocery cart helped with walking in the store. By the time I got back to the truck, I felt I had walked 10 miles. Got the groceries I need for the week and gased up, so I can go out to Partridge Run tommorow to go fishing. Also went to Henry Hudson Park, for a drive but did not get out of my truck, as it was getting late, and it just is hard for me to get back in. Still pretty looking out at the river. Maybe go river fishing next week.

Sprained ankles sound stupid and common place, but they are a real nasty injury and don’t heal overnight. 23 more days in the sprain boot to heal then whatever time it takes to fully rebuild strength in the ankle before I can do a lot of hiking again. Probably start by walking down to the library, then the evening walk, which will get me up to 4.1 miles per day. Add in a mile walk a lunch and I’m over 5 miles per day. In some ways this is a wakeup call – I’m thinking of a diet and a more aggressive exercise plan beyond just walking 4-5 miles a day after my ankle recovers. Not sure what it will involve – probably drinking fewer of the Bud Heavies.

As September 16th I get to take the boot off, probably will take off September 17, 18, and the weekend off to travel. Right now I’m leaning towards going up to the Tug Hill and Otter Creek area but I’m not totally sure. I know I will still be limited somewhat for hiking but there is lots of fun stuff to do in the woods during the fall.

August 20, 2015 evening

As we close out the 20th we are looking at 77 degrees. It’s pretty humid out this evening as the heavy rain approaches and will leave us with a half inch or more by morning. With the rain leaving by morning, the humidity and dewpoint levels should drop from sticky to more comfortable levels.

Tomorrow will gradually become more sunny and reach 80 degrees but much more pleasant. May become mostly sunny by sunset at 7:46 PM. The weekend will be pleasant with partly sunny conditions and around 80 degrees both days. If my foot wasn’t in a sprain boot, I would be getting out of town I suspect. If you get the chance, do it because the summer days won’t be hear for long. Fall and hunting season is just around the bend.

I made it back to work today. My foot was a bit sore and it seemed like an awful long walk down to the bus stop but I made it back to work. I probably could have stayed out a few more days but I missed work and I knew certain things wouldn’t happen with my absence. With hot conditions expected and the lack of air conditioning and Internet and television at home, I had no interest in missing more work. Everybody wished me a speedy recovery I ran into today.

The toughest thing has to be not being able to get around the neighborhood by foot especially after work. The evenings aren’t the same without being able to walk down to the library or the park. And I miss my evening walk which does so much to de-stress after a long day in the office. But I had to lay in bed this evening and let things heal. Walking long distances is going to have to wait until September 16th. It’s important to let things heal. With 5 gigs of data this month, I had plenty of data to use this evening to play on social media on my phone while stuck in bed with my foot elevated. I hate it though because I feel like a flat slob, who is a prisoner to his bedroom. I need to be recover though.

At this point I don’t know if I will get out fishing on Friday night as getting into my jacked up truck is still a challenge and it gets dark early. But Saturday I have to get to a grocery store – maybe a small one like Voorheesville Grand Union – and maybe go fishing up at Partridge Run. Maybe not this weekend but next week get up to Dick’s to take advantage of their pre-hunting season sale I got information about in the mail today.

August 13, 2015 evening

Good evening, 63 degrees and partly clear this evening. Probably not the best weather conditions for the Perseid Meteor Showers but maybe it will clear late. I’m off to bed and will certainly miss them but I might get lucky and see some meteorites in the Adirondacks this weekend.

Got the kayak on the roof of my pickup and clothes and water packed for the weekend. The grill and charcoal are packed. Gased up and picked up supplies at Walmart. I should be able to leave right from work for the Adirondacks.

Since January I’ve been looking at these LED decorative light tubes to mount on the shelf of my truck below the gun rack. Finally broke down and bought them, got them wired up tonight. They aren’t super bright but they do provide a little light in the truck cap and use a fraction of a watt electricity. Almost too dim to light up the gun rack very well while camping but they do provide some visibility in the cap. They can be set to either red, green or blue. Green is the brightest color but I think the gun rack would look best bathed in red, especially if I’m up in the woods camping while hunting.

Got a new clock for the bathroom. The old digital clock had digits that had been fading for years and I was unable to set the time on it. It worked okay insofar as I would add thirty odd minutes to get the time but that was increasingly getting off. I got a basic $4 wall three hand clock from Walmart. It’s the kind of thing I expect will work perfectly for years. It’s kind of important to have the time in the bathroom as I shower after breakfast and before I dress, and I have to leave by a specific time to catch the bus.

Should be a nice weekend assuming the thunderstorms hold off. I might end up buying firewood on Friday because the days are getting shorter and it sure is easy to not have to gather firewood. Just because you can find wood in the woods doesn’t mean you should and it helps preserve the resource for others if you buy local wood.

August 13, 2015 morning

Partly cloudy and 68 degrees this morning. Later times of clouds and sun and 80. Should be a pleasant day before the heat starts creeping in for the second half of the weekend. Next week looks to be hazy, hot and humid like summer is supposed to be.

Depending on the weather, next week it’s back to the Finger Lakes again for more swimming. I will also bring the kayak for this trip and do some fishing. I would like to spend more time at the Watkins Glen pool in hot weather. But if the weather doesn’t look good for swimming then I will probably head up to Lewis County to explore the Otter Creek area. I’m also thinking of heading up to the White Rocks area of the Green Mountain National Forest near Manchester at some point.

But tommorow it’s off to White House and Wells. Almost too hot to go there but I think it will be fun to visit the town beach. I would go to Stewart Landing and Piseco Powley Road but I’ve been up there a lot and I’m planning on heading up there for Labor Day Weekend. I’ve never camped at Stewart Landing as I prefer to be farther back in the woods so I can shoot and not bother nobody.

August 12, 2015 evening

Mostly cloudy and 68 degrees. Not particularly good weather for watching the Perseid Meteor showers. Yesterday on my evening walk I did see a shooting star which resembled a piece of burning magnesium like a firework falling from the sky. The fair is going on at the Altamont Fairgrounds and the spotlights and rides always kick a lot of bright spotlight beams into the sky.

Tonight was the Save the Pine Bush Dinner. It was well attended, especially for a mid-summer dinner when many people were on vacation, attending the NY State Food Festival, or at the County Fair. Dan Egan and Dan Platt attended while Dan McCoy and some Republican candidate I have never heard of was a no show. Busy evening at the dinner with a lot of our usual volunteers out of town for the evening. But we pulled it off .

Tommorow it’s off to work then back home to pack the camping gear for the weekend. Going to be a hot one but are looking at camping at White House near Wells, swimming at the Wells Beach, and paddling and fishing the main branch of the Sacandaga River above Auger Falls. Supposedly very nice flat water up there but it’s never really explored much up there.
