Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

Australia Day 2016 Morning

Good morning! Australia Day. It is currently overcast and 36 degrees in Delmar. Kind of depressing but at least we are avoiding the freezing rain they are getting up north. Today will have scattered showers, mainly between noon and 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 44. Northwest wind 13 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. With this mostly bleak winter, you have to wonder if suicides have increased. Probably not but day after drab day just ain’t fun. Most of the highways with suicide lanes have long had them removed for safety purposes.

Sunset will be at 5:01 pm with twilight at 5:31 pm which is one minute and 17 seconds later then yesterday. It’s official, the post 5 pm sunset is here. Tonight we will have a Waining Gibbous Moon with 80% illuminated. It will rise at 7:48 pm. The Last Quarter Moon is on Sunday and the New Moon is on February 8.

There are 1 month, 26 days until First Day of Spring. Everybody in New York State is counting down to that day, especially if it involves sunny weather and warmer temperatures.

This day in 1998, U.S. President Bill Clinton denies having had “sexual relations” with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Duly noted. It’s remarkable how many Americans want to return to the 1990s, a decade while the economy was strong was pretty miserable for a lot of working Americans. Whatever happened to having fresh new ideas?

Today is pay day, which is good because the rent check is due at the end of the month and there is bills to pay. By the time one pays the bills, the IRA account, savings account, and everything else, there usually is only a hundred bucks above the bank’s minimum deposit if even that. Life is so darn expensive.

Opposite Day 2016 Night

Good evening. Currently partly cloudy and 33 degrees in Delmar. Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low around 28. South wind 8 to 13 mph. The wind makes it feel a bit chillier the mercury says but the stars and moon are bright.

Tonight we have a Waning Gibbous Moon with 97% illuminated. Big bright moon tonight for sure. Tomorrow’s sunrise will be at 7:14 am with first light at 6:44 am, which is one minute and 51 seconds earlier then today. I certainly appreciate the extra daylight in the morning.

I was going to be in bed by 11 PM but it didn’t happen. I got working with PyQGIS and developing the plug-in I’m making to automate the routine stuff relating to map making. I’m finding I can do a lot with PyQGIS now that I’m mastering the API. The more I automate, the less I have to do manually and risk messing up. I hate redoing a whole batch of maps over some tiny little glitch.

I hope you had a good Opposite Day. Sleep well!

Opposite Day 2016 Morning

Good morning! Ugg. Five day week? It is currently mostly cloudy and 23 degrees in Delmar. Another depressing start to the morning but on this Opposite Day, we expect sunny conditions later, with a high near 37. Calm wind becoming southeast around 5 mph in the afternoon. Should be a nice afternoon.

Sunset will be at 4:59 pm with twilight at 5:30 pm which is one minute and 17 seconds later then yesterday. Not quite a five o’clock sunset, unless you head a little bit west, like out in Berne or maybe just to the top of Bennett Hill in Clarksville. You’ll actually see the sunset tonight as it will be clear. Tonight we will have a Waining Gibbous Moon with 87% illuminated. It will rise in the east around 6:49 pm. The Last Quarter Moon is on Sunday and the New Moon is on February 8.

There are 4 months, 25 days until Fathers Day. I’m sure the dads of the world will look forward to it. Friday is my 33rd birthday. This day in 1960, the National Association of Broadcasters reacts to the “payola” scandal by threatening fines for any disc jockeys who accept money for playing particular records. Fortunately, payola doesn’t happen anymore.

It’s been cold enough this past week that the Normans Kill is freezing up or at least has a good skim of ice on it. The town skating rink is finally frozen and folks are ice skating on it. Lawsons Lake is frozen and people are ice fishing on it carefully. People have been ice fishing in the Adirondacks for a few weeks now. That said, it’s expected that ice will thaw out a bit with temperatures expected to reach 37 this afternoon.

Glad I washed my truck off good yesterday to hold off the tin worm who comes out of hibernation with the warmer weather. Want to get a few more winters out of my truck before it gets all rusty. I’m paranoid about road salt, plus my truck looks nice all clean.

Macintosh Computer Day 2016 Night

Good evening. Currently partly cloudy under moonlit skies and 26 degrees in Delmar. A very nice evening for mid-January with pleasant weather expected for the rest of the week but a few cloudy days expected mid-week. Later tonight more clouds, with a low around 18. Northwest wind around 6 mph becoming calm after midnight.

Tonight we have a Waining Gibbous Moon with 94% illuminated. Really almost looks like a full moon on this delightful moonlit evening. I can’t complain for it being January. Tomorrow’s sunrise will be at 7:15 am with first light at 6:45 am, which is one minute and 50 seconds earlier then today.

The Save the Pine Bush Hike went well as, we had nearly a dozen people . We haven’t had that many people on a hike for a long time. Mark Platt was a great hike leader. It was great weather, with deep blue skies for the first half of the hike. I have photos to upload, I’ll try to get them uploaded starting tomorrow morning. I was having trouble with my USB cable so it didn’t happen tonight.

I got PyQGIS scripting working with the composer view and downloaded the plug-in template generator. It’s obvious that learning python and scripting QGIS will not only save time but will make better, more accurate mapsand teach me a hot new scripting and programming language plus give me knowledge into Qt programming. I certainly can not complain, as I’m really learning everything I can imagine I’ll ever need to know.

Washed much truck today, getting the worse of the salt build up out of the wheel wells and undercarriage to hopefully squeak out a few more rust free years, at least on the body panels. It’s tough living in the rust belt with all the salt they apply. Manufacturers have certainly gotten a lot better at sealing the sheet metal to prevent rust. You don’t see the rust buckets around you might have seen ten years ago, but alas still the tin worm never sleeps.

For Sunday dinner had spinach casserole which my mom makes amazing. It doesn’t sound great to spinach haters but it’s really good. I went grocery shopping today and did my wash. Ready for a productive work week this week.

I hope you had a good Macintosh Computer Day. Sleep well!

Macintosh Computer Day 2016 Afternoon

Good afternoon on this Macintosh Computer Day. Currently a few clouds but generally sunny and 21 degrees in Delmar. Cold but sunny. Beats the depressing cloudy weather of recent. Today will be partly sunny, with a high near 30. Northwest wind around 8 mph.

Sunset will be at 4:58 pm with twilight at 5:29 pm which is one minute and 17 seconds later then yesterday. Tonight we will have a Waining Gibbous Moon with 94% illuminated. It will rise at 5:50 pm.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy,
with a low around 18. Northwest wind around 6 mph becoming calm after midnight.

The days are getting longer. In two weeks the sun will be setting at 5:16 pm, which is 18 minutes later then today. The sunset in four weeks on Feb. 21 is at 5:35 pm. Daylight Savings Time begins on Sunday, March 13 is 1 month, 20 days away. Sunset on that day is at 7:00 pm. Looking forward to longer and warmer days but the sun is nice today.

Today is the Save the Pine Bush Hike at 1 PM at the Water Tower on Madison Avenue Extension which is across from the corner of Washington Ave and New Karner Road. I am heading over once I get done with my shower.

Handwriting Day 2016 Night

Good evening. Currently partly cloudy and 15 degrees in Delmar. Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low around 12. North wind 7 to 9 mph.

Tonight is January’s Full Wolf Moon. Definitely a big beautiful moon tonight. Tomorrow’s sunrise will be at 7:16 am with first light at 6:46 am, which is one minute and 48 seconds earlier then today.

Tonight I taught myself how to program in Python and write Quantum GIS plug-ins to further automate things in QGIS. Python is a fairly straightforward language, it’s kind of nice how free form and simple it really is. Read an ebook for about it for two hours and I already feel fairly competent in the basics. QGIS scripting is remarkably easy to automate loading layers, apply styles, and so forth. QtGui turned out to be fairly straightforward for creating dialogs too. I’m not a real programmer but I know a thing or two about data structures and programming logic. Great skill to learn, I figure.

Other than that, a pretty quite Saturday. Didn’t do much besides walk down to the library. I haven’t started Big Red up since I went to Walmart on Thursday. He’ll be fine though. Gas is down to $2.02 locally which is shockingly cheap, especially by New York high tax standards. Oh, well.

I hope you had a Saturday. Sleep well!
