Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.
A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.
In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.
Good afternoon on this Handwriting Day. Currently mostly cloudy and 25 degrees in Delmar. A few breaks of blue sky on and off. You’ll probably be able to see the Wolf Moon at times tonight through the clouds. Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low around 13. North wind 7 to 10 mph. Cold but good for looking at the moon.
Sunset will be at 4:57 pm with twilight at 5:27 pm which is one minute and 16 seconds later then yesterday. Tonight is January’s Full Wolf Moon.
Sunday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 29. Northwest wind around 8 mph. Should be great weather for the Save the Pine Bush hike which is meeting by the water tower at 1 PM on Sunday. We are going to be exploring some of the backwoods by the Kiakout Kill including the 40 Karner Road parcel that the county is acquiring. More about it can be found on the Save the Pine Bush website
The days are getting longer. Even though today was cloudy, the increase in daylight is noticeable. In two weeks the sun will be setting at 5:15 pm, which is 18 minutes later then today. The sunset in four weeks on Feb. 20 is at 5:33 pm. Daylight Savings Time begins on Sunday, March 13 is 1 month, 21 days away. Sunset on that day is at 7:00 pm. I sure look forward to going to the park after work, once we have enough daylight to make that a reasonable possibility — and warm enough too.
And, no I didn’t do the oil change today. It kind of was a lazy Saturday. Too cold to do the oil change. I might do it tomorrow or sometime in the future. I got to get the oil, after all. I might go out the mall tonight to do some walking, as it’s kind of cold to be walking outside, especially as I still don’t own a functional, true winter coat. We’ll see. It was kind of fun walking in the mall last weekend, and it might be fun to look at Dick’s Sporting Goods for more toys that can’t afford because I’m broke. Someday I’ll have enough money in my checking account to buy a stupid winter coat. That or it will get very cold out and I’ll freeze to death, which is the more likely thing to happen.
Good morning! Handwriting Day. It is currently overcast and 20 degrees in Delmar. While the snow is staying south of us, still kind of a dark and dreary day. Today will be cloudy to mostly cloudy, with a high near 25. North wind 8 to 10 mph. Sunset will be at 4:57 pm with twilight at 5:27 pm which is one minute and 16 seconds later then yesterday.
There are 4 months, 7 days until Memorial Day. A long way until the official kick off of summer but it will come here eventually. This day in 1964, the 24th Amendment to the United States Constitution, prohibiting the use of poll taxes in national elections, is ratified.
I’m thinking of doing an oil change today, but let’s see what the weather is later. I do need to go to Walmart to buy oil but I figure do that before the change so I can warm up the engine. But if it snows or its cold, I can wait another week as I am still at 25% oil life.
Good evening. Currently mostly cloudy and 20 degrees in Delmar. Tonight will be cloudy, with a low around 17. North wind 5 to 7 mph. Waxing gibbous moon, setting at 6:13 am. Tomorrow’s sunrise will be at 7:17 am with first light at 6:46 am, which is one minute and 45 seconds earlier then today.
Good Evening on this Friday. As we head into the weekend it is mostly clear and 26 degrees in Delmar. Tonight will get increasingly clear, with a low around 17. North wind 5 to 7 mph.
Tonight to start out a potentially quite nice weekend we have a beautiful full moon on tap. It really is beautiful as we see the Wolf Moon rise over the city. Saturday will be cloudy with breaks of sun, especially as you head north, with a high near 27. North wind 8 to 10 mph. Look for more sun and somewhat warmer weather come Sunday with highs around freezing or slightly above.
Due to traffic the bus got a somewhat late start out of the city but not traffic is moving well and I expect to be home fairly early. It’s been an awful long salt encrusted weekend. I’ll wash Big Red and get some of the salt off it but still the rust belt. Even if they’ve gotten better at fighting rust on the body panels, rust eats everything else on cars and chews aways on the bridges and stains all our clothes and boots with salt.
I was listening to the evening news bemoaning how bad the local infrastructure is and how we must spend billions repairing it.
My response:
1) What percentage of Americans last year died due to bridges collapsing under them?
2) What percentage of Americans died from last year from drinking contaminated drinking water or exposure to untreated sewage?
American infrastructure is decaying and needs maintenance. But so does all man-made things as soon as their exposed to the forces of nature and constant use. Just because something is old and worn looking, doesn’t mean it can’t preform it’s duties within engineered limits. We have to trust the science and continue to learn the limits of materials. We should only upgrade or replace infrastructure when science says it’s necessary or when demands on its use justify the change.
Good morning! Hot Sauce Day. Spice up your Friday! It is currently sunny and 14 degrees in Delmar. It may be fairly chilly on the mercury scale but the sun makes it feel quite warm. The sun is incredibly bright for January in advance of the cold front that won’t actually make it here.
Today will be sunny, with a high near 26. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph. Sunset will be at 4:56 pm with twilight at 5:26 pm which is one minute and 16 seconds later then yesterday. Monday has the five o’clock sunset.
There are 4 months, 17 days until Best Friends Day. This day in 1973, The Supreme Court of the United States delivers its decisions in Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, legalizing elective abortion in all fifty states. Talk about a hot topic for National Hot Sauce Day.
Good evening. Currently clear and 19 degrees in Delmar. Tonight will be clear, with a low around 12. Northwest wind 6 to 9 mph. Waxing gibbous moon that is close to full, setting at 5:15 am. Pretty moon for sure. Tomorrow’s sunrise will be at 7:18 am with first light at 6:47 am, which is one minute and 44 seconds earlier then today.
Fired up Big Red and picked up some headphones at Walmart because I managed to break another pair. Sometimes I get ear buds that last for months, other times the ones I get break after a few weeks. The good news is Big Red is working well, starts right up in the cold. It’s a salty mess but I’ll clean her up on Saturday. Also thinking of doing an oil change on Saturday if the weather is decent, she’s close to being due. Also picked up a few groceries and supplies. If we do get snow on Saturday, I’m prepared but as of now it looks like Saturday will be nothing worse than cloudy. So be it.
I hope you had a good Squirrel Appreciation Day … Sleep well!
