Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.
A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.
In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.
Good evening! Currently 24 degrees and moonlit skies with a few clouds with a 6 mph north wind. The wind chill value is currently 17. Not too cold and a bright snow moon under those February skies. Look for a low around 19 and continued clear skies. Calm wind.

The Albany Young Democrats meeting was fun. Went out for a drink to Lynn’s Uptown Bar. Then went for a very pleasant evening moonlit walk. Now watching the PBS News hour. Pretty tired tonight I have to admit.
Been thinking about getting a wireless keyboard to use with my laptop and monitor. Ever since I got my TV tuner with its remote, I’ve been thinking I wish I could control my laptop remotely when hooked to the screen for purposes of playing previously video and other media. It seems like there are several options for wireless keyboards between $20 to 40. I’m going to do some more research than order or pick up a keyboard later in the week I think. Although I do got to watch my budget, as rent is due soon and my car insurance bill is due next month – and I hope to get out camping soon.
I hope you had a good day. It was a Monday but we survived. Sleep well!

There are 3 months, 8 days until Memorial Day when the sun will be setting at 8:25 pm (Daylight Savings Time). Aren’t we all looking forward to the unofficial start to summer minus maybe black fly season. I wonder if the mild winter will effect the black flies this year? I have no idea.
Happy Birthday to the late Ted Kennedy, the liberal icon of the US Senate. He shares a birthday with another liberal, David Axlerod, the famous Obama political strategist who turns 61 years old today. If it’s also your birthday, have a great one.
Today in 1871, Frank Woolworth opens his first store in Utica. The last Woolworth’s store would close in the early 1990s. I vaguely remember going there as a child.
Another morning that I decided to get an early start and take the express bus to work via the Park and Ride. I enjoy taking that 9/10th mile walk to kick off day, especially on a bright and sunny morning like today. When I get in the office the sunlight will be pouring in on my desk and I will get a jump on the business of the day.
Today the high temperature was 49 degrees. Not as warm as yesterday when it got up to 62 degrees in the city. This is way above the norm for February 20-21 when the average high is 36 and the average low is 19. Didn’t shatter the record from 2007 when the record high of 67 degrees was set. Saturday was one degree short of the record high of 62.

I didn’t post a morning update, as I was tweaking some code on my blog and I kind of slept in. Minor updates but I managed to break thingsΒ in rather unexpected ways. Somebody forgot to to properly call something out of a class, which made things go a bit haywire. But things should be fixed, and I will avoid pushing an updated for something else forward until I’m sure everything is working properly.
It’s kind of cloudy day, I didn’t make many plans. I got to go grocery shopping later, and plan to stop over at John Wolcott’s house to look at some more maps. We’ll see how things go.
Don’t be sad the weekend is coming to a conclusion. A new one is just five days away!

It was nice to get back hiking in the Catskills today, although Plateau Mountain is a pretty steep hike for the first half mile although it moderates the farther you get up the mountains. I haven’t spent much time in the mountains recently. Pretty nice day but in the evening it clouded up. Stony Clove was quite pretty.
I haven’t been through Greenville and Freehold in a long time, and it kind of brought back many memories and observations on how things have changed in the fifthteen years. Lots of mud due to the lack of snow on farms and the rural landscape.
As much as people talk about the Adirondacks and the Catskills, but I realize they aren’t the only mountains in the world. Hiking in the Catskills reminds me a lot of parts of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Driving up NY 23A, I reminded of many of the narrow, steep, and windy US Highways throughout West Virginia. I love mountains but I see the writing on the wall for our state, and how they’ll only be increasingly closed off to the public’s use.
I’m really hoping to get to West Virginia and Virginia, along with maybe Tennessee and explore more of the Blue Ridge Parkway. I also want to spend more time in the Shenandoah Valley and seeing more of America. The Catskills are great but they still are in New York State.
I hope you had a good day. It certainly was a warm one and some great hiking. Sleep well!
Good morning! Happy Saturday. Finally the weekend! It is currently partly cloudy and 38 degrees in Delmar.

Today in 1971 the Β Emergency Broadcast SystemΒ is accidentally activated with an erroneous national alert. What was meant to be a test went out as a real alert, but demonstrated the flaws in the system when several radio and television stations ignored the alert.
Happy Birthday to Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority Leader. He turns 73 years old today. He’s old enough, maybe he should consider a life of leisure and retire. Dealing with a group of GOP senators all day long must be tough work.
Those who stay up late will want to wish Trevor Noah a Happy 32nd Birthday!
There are 1 month, 1 day until First Day of Spring. Today should definitely feel spring like outside.
I think I’m going hiking somewhere today but I’m a bit unsure where I want to go.

Breezy, with a south wind 20 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than one inch possible.
In four weeks on March 18 the sun will be setting at 7:06 pm, which is 1 hour and 33 minutes later then tonight. That is the first Friday in daylight savings time.
As you saw from my earlier post, I survived defensive driving class. It was such a long six hours. Such a gory class, and I’ve taken it so many times, that it’s fairly pointless except for the insurance discount. Driving really is a dangerous, deadly activity. I took the rest of the day off from work and headed home. In a little bit, I’m going to head to Walmart or Staples and get a flash drive so I can use my new TV tuner to save and play video.
You know after all these years, I kind of like being able to watch TV at home. The picture is quite beautiful on the LCD screen and makes it easier to understand world events with the visual. I can still work on my laptop or make breakfast and flip through the channels and see what is happening in the news. I can mute the audio and listen to NPR and get twice the news at once.
Other than that, no real weekend plans but hope to get out for a hike somewhere in the Albany area. Saturday’s forecast seems quite nice. We will see.
