Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

June 12, 2016 11 PM Update

Good evening! Currently cloudy and 55 degrees in Delmar. There is a west-northwest breeze at 8 mph.

Mostly cloudy tonight, with a low around 50. Northwest wind 14 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. The normal low for tonight is 56, so it will be about six degrees above normal. The record low of 38 occured back in 1974.

Tonight we have a First Quarter Moon with 50% illuminated. The moon will rise around 12:28 pm and will set around 2:17 am. June’s Strawberry Moon is on Monday, June 20th.

Tomorrow the sun will rise at 5:16 am with the first light at 4:42 am, which is 2 seconds earlier then today.

Partly sunny and cool for Monday. Look for a high near 70. Northwest wind 15 to 17 mph. The normal high for Monday is 77, so it will be pretty cool for this time of year. The record high of 94 happened back in 1892.

The warm up occurs Tuesday with seasonal temperatures and ample sunshine. Going to be a nice week weather wise.

After taking down camp drove down to Sled Harbor then a few miles further at Perkins Clearing. Looked at fishing in what I think was the Miami River, which looked like it might have some trout pools but decided against it when I saw how low the river was. Then tossed a line in the Jessup River until I lost the lure when the wind caught it and flew into a tree. Then I got yet another lure stuck in my shirt. The wind started to pick up and then some heavy rain. Drove home. The weather sucked this weekend.

Washed my truck, gassed it up. Went to my parents house for Sunday dinner. Went for my evening walk. Finished unpacking. Really quite tired for sure.

I’m not getting into that pitty party on Facebook about some obscure shooting in Orlando as a way to ram even more absurd gun control down our throats. Life is full of risks and freedom means some people will use it irresponsibly. Punish murders to the full extent of the law and seize their assets. You can’t punish people for thought crime. I really think that the left has really lost its mind in recent years. I’m really divided on the choice between Trump and Clinton. Buffoon versus scheming, dishonest politician.

Looking ahead, Fathers Day is in 1 week, September 11th is in 13 weeks and Christmas is in 28 weeks.

I hope you had a good weekend. Sleep well.

June 9, 2016 Night

Good evening! Currently mostly sunny and 54 degrees in Delmar. There is a west breeze at 9 mph.

Mostly clear and cool tonight. We will be Mostly clear, with a low around 46. Northwest wind 6 to 11 mph. The normal low for tonight is 55, so it will be about nine degrees below normal. The record low of 36 occured back in 1975. Only ten degrees below the record cold. The Adirondacks will drop close to freezing tonight.

Tonight we have a Waxing Crescent Moon with 30% illuminated. The moon will rise around 9:13 am and will set around 12:38 am. June’s Strawberry Moon is on Monday, June 20th.

Tomorrow the sun will rise at 5:17 am with the first light at 4:42 am, which is 8 seconds earlier then today.

Sunny fairly cool for Friday. We will be sunny, with a high near 70. Northwest wind 13 to 15 mph. Pretty brisk for June, even colder in the Adirondacks. The normal high for Friday is 77, so it will be pretty cool. The record high of 96 happened back in 2008.

Looking ahead, Sugar Cookie Day is in 1 months, State Fair Opens is in 11 weeks and Thanksgiving is in 24 weeks.

My camping gear is mostly packed. I think based on the forecast I might actually dig out the propane heater, to warm my butt up in the cold (seriously). They’re talking low 40s and windy at times this weekend. We’ll see. I have the propane for the stove, so I guess it’s just one more bag to bring it. Should be a nice weekend, despite the cool weather.

I hope you had a good day. Sleep well.

June 8, 2016 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. I think there is hope for the weekend. Currently partly cloudy and 61 degrees in Delmar. Breezy, 16 mph breeze from the west-northwest. Generally pleasant right now.

Scattered showers and cool for today. We will be scattered showers, with thunderstorms also possible after noon. Increasing clouds, with a high near 66. West wind 9 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. The normal high for today is 76, so it will be about normal for this time of year. The record high of 93 happened back in 2011. That year was a pretty warm one for sure. If this summer is that warm, I plan to spend a lot of time at the Potholers. Which so far this summer hasn’t been real warm.

Tonight the sun will set at 8:32 pm with dusk around 9:06 pm, which is 35 seconds later than yesterday. Today will have 15 hours and 14 minutes of daylight, an increase of 47 seconds over yesterday.

Isolated showers and continued cool tonight. We will be isolated showers before 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 48. West wind 14 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. The normal low for tonight is 55, so it will be about seven degrees below normal. The record low of 37 occured back in 1977.

On this day in 1968, Robert F. Kennedy’s funeral takes place at the St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. While it’s true that many prime voters today can assassination of John F. Kennedy and Bobby Kennedy in another decade there will be many fewer of them. It’s bound to change how people perceive politics. I think it’s wonderful that they have been doing so much documentation of the neighborhoods that disappeared with construction of the Empire State Plaza as few will remember a time before the plaza in another decade.

June 7, 2016 Night

Good evening! Currently partly cloudy and 63 degrees in Delmar. There is a west breeze at 14 mph. The dew point is a comfortable 51. It’s nice how long the nights are. By the time I got home at 9:30, there was still some daylight left. Nautical twilight when it’s dark enough to see the stars well and really dark didn’t conclude until 9:50.

Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low around 54. West wind 9 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. The normal low for tonight is 54, so it will be about normal for this time of year. The record low of 38 occured back in 1951.

Tonight we have a Waxing Crescent Moon with 20% illuminated. The moon will rise around 7:07 am and will set around 11:24 pm. June’s Strawberry Moon is on Monday, June 20th.

Tomorrow the sun will rise at 5:17 am with the first light at 4:42 am, which is 12 seconds earlier then today.

Chance of t-storms and cool for Wednesday. We will have a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 64. West wind 8 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. The normal high for Wednesday is 76, so it will be below normal for this time of year. The record high of 93 happened back in 2011.

Looking ahead, Flag Day is in 1 weeks, Armed Forces Day is in 2 weeks, Altamont Fair Opens is in 10 weeks and Election Day is in 22 weeks.

I think the cool weather will be refreshing. For the weekend with the cool temperatures, I don’t expect the black flies to be too bad for the weekend. We are rapidly moving past black fly season. With those long nights it will be nice in the Adirondacks this weekend . I may pick up some fireworks locally to light off and play with during the weekend.

I’ve started to thinking about mounting the solar panel permanently on the roof of my truck cap. Been thinking about how much sun the truck gets parked and then I would have ample power at camp while parked. I worry about leaks though by drilling through the truck cap roof, so I have some questions about doing it.

I hope you had a good day. Sleep well.

June 7, 2016 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Today is VCR day. Honestly, I like how my digital TV converter box automatically records the PBS Newshour each evening – but not on tape like the olden days.

Currently partly cloudy and 63 degrees in Delmar. There is a south-southwest breeze at 9 mph. The dew point is a somewhat sticky 61. A lot of moisture in the air from last night. Not a terrible day but still pretty humid. I wish the bus had more air conditioning.

Some of the storms could produce small hail and gusty winds. Partly sunny, with a high near 79. Calm wind becoming west 5 to 9 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. The normal high for today is 76, so it will be about normal for this time of year. The record high of 95 happened back in 1999.

Tonight the sun will set at 8:31 pm with dusk around 9:06 pm, which is 38 seconds later than yesterday. Today will have 15 hours and 13 minutes of daylight, an increase of 52 seconds over yesterday.

Isolated showers but otherwise seasonable for tonight. We will be isolated showers before 2am. Partly cloudy, with a low around 53. West wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. The normal low for tonight is 54, so it will be about normal for this time of year. The record low of 38 occured back in 1951.

On this day in 1965, the Supreme Court of the United States hands down its decision in Griswold v. Connecticut, effectively legalizing the use of contraception by married couples.

There are 1 weeks until Flag Day when the sun will be setting at 8:34 pm with dusk at 9:09 pm. The average high temperature is 78 degrees, with a record high of 96 in 1892.

We made it to Tuesday, so step by step we are getting closer to the weekend. Looking forward to exploring the Miami River this weekend and doing some fishing.

June 6, 2016 11 PM Update

Good evening! Currently clear and 66 degrees in Delmar. The spring peepers are relatively quiet tonight and a fairly sparse population of fireflies. The recently cut hay field at the farm down the road. The dew point has creeped up a bit with the coming rain but still is a comfortable 53.

Decided to head inside and retire to bed, while I watch the PBS Newshour that I taped earlier in the evening. I have to hear about the day’s follies of Donald Trump. I don’t really like Hillary but she isn’t likely to be as destructive as her GOP opponent. I guess the .22 ammo shortage will last four more years. Or maybe more ammunition manufacturers will open up in response to hoarders who fear yet another nutty president.

Partly cloudy then chance of showers and warm for tonight. We will have a chance of showers, mainly after 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 62. South wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. The normal low for tonight is 54, so it will be about eight degrees above normal. The record low of 37 occured back in 1958.

Tomorrow the sun will rise at 5:17 am with the first light at 4:43 am, which is 14 seconds earlier then today. Sunrise comes pretty early this time of year. It’s really kind of obnoxious how early it is.

Chance of showers then chance of t-storms but otherwise seasonable for Tuesday. We will have a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after noon. Some of the storms could produce small hail and gusty winds. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 78. Southwest wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. The record high of 95 happened back in 1999.

Looking ahead, First Day of Summer is in 2 weeks, Independence Day is in 4 weeks, First Day of August is in 8 weeks, Labor Day is in 13 weeks, Columbus Day is in 18 weeks and Halloween is in 21 weeks.
