Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

June 23, 2016 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 64 degrees in Delmar. There is a north-northwest breeze at 6 mph. The dew point is a comfortable 44.

Mostly packed for camping this weekend. I do have to stop on the way out and pick up some groceries. But should be a great but warm weekend. Fishing, camping, paddling Sprite Creek from Stewart Landing to West Canada Lake, camping and the Potholers.

Tonight will be clear, with a low around 52. Seven degrees below normal. Northwest wind 3 to 5 mph. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1932. Only eight degrees above the record low tonight – but still late June is fairly warm.

Tonight we have a Waning Gibbous Moon with 80% illuminated. July’s Buck Moon is on Tuesday, July 19th.

Tomorrow the sun will rise at 5:18 am with the first light at 4:44 am, which is 21 seconds later then today. Mornings are slowly but surely getting later each day. In contrast, we are still picking up a few additional seconds of daylight every day. The latest sunset of the year is on Sunday, June 26th. After that, the days start getting shorter.

Friday will be sunny, with a high near 81. One degrees above normal. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph. The record high of 96 was set in 1943. Should be a very nice day with more low humidity temperatures.

Sunday Night. Partly Cloudy and 62 degrees.

More humidity next week but cooler with a possibility of some much needed rain in the form of thunderstorms.

Monday. Partly Sunny and 85 degrees.
Monday Night. Chance of Showers and 64 degrees.
Tuesday. Chance of T-storms and 83 degrees.
Tuesday Night. Chance of T-storms and 60 degrees.
Wednesday. Mostly Sunny and 80 degrees.

I’ve started to dig into CDC death statistics. They make some pretty interesting maps. Suicide statistics are fascinating, especially how suicide is much more common in the western part of the United States and parts of the Bible belt, but rarer in Texas and parts of the deep south. A follow up map will have to look at the rate of firearm suicide versus non-firearm suicides in each county. With the gun debate this would be an interesting one. Then maybe look as the other fatal diseases like lung cancer. Interesting stuff.

June 23, 2016 Evening

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 82 degrees in Albany, NY. There is a northwest breeze at 15 mph. The dew point is a comfortable 40. Hardly a drop of humidity in the air.

Today was just one of those days. I survived it I think though. Just kind of a major headache. Tomorrow is Friday.

Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low around 55. Four degrees below normal. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light north after midnight. The record low of 44 occured back in 1932.

In four weeks on July 21 the sun will be setting at 8:25 pm, which is 11 minutes earlier then today. The average high is 83 degrees, and the record for that date is 101 degrees was set back in 1930.

Today will have a chance of showers, mainly before 11am. Best chance for the showers us in the Adirondacks. Later on it will become mostly sunny, with a high near 77. Three degrees below normal. Light and variable wind becoming west 10 to 15 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. June 21, 2016 8 AM Update

Good morning! This Tuesday is the second day of summer. Mostly sunny and 69 degrees in Delmar. There is a west breeze at 13 mph. The dew point is a comfortable 51. Deep blue skies to the west but some clouds to the east. A pretty nice day is on tap for our Tuesday.

Today will be sunny, with a high near 80. One degree above normal. West wind 11 to 13 mph. A bit breezy but hard to complain. The record high of 97 was set in 1938.

Tonight the sun will set at 8:36 pm with dusk around 9:11 pm, which is 11 seconds later than yesterday. As I mentioned yesterday, the sunset is a bit later through June 26, even though the sunrises are happening later now for a net loss in day time. Today will have 15 hours and 18 minutes of daylight, a decrease of 4 seconds over yesterday. You’ll only notice it if your an early riser with a stop watch.

Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low around 54. A somewhat cool evening. Five degrees below normal. Southwest wind 3 to 8 mph. The record low of 37 occured back in 1940.

On this day in 1970, Penn CentralΒ declares Section 7 bankruptcy , largest ever US corporate bankruptcy up to this date. Ultimately Congress would step in with government run Conrail which would later be re-privitized as a series of large regional railroads. Commercial rail has made a major comeback but Amtrak still seems to struggle especially in the rural west.

There are 8 weeks until Altamont Fair Opens when the sun will be setting at 7:54 pm with dusk at 8:24 pm. It will be here before you know it. Earlier sunsets but continued warmth. The average high temperature is 81 degrees, with a record high of 97 in 1936.

Still chewing over the weekend plans. It looks like it’s going to be hot, which screams Potholers in my book. I’m not sure, but I’m also interested in getting up to Stewart Landing and Sprite Creek / West Canada Lake to paddle and fish. Then again, both locations are close and doable. But then again, pool swimming at Mine Kill State Park and paddling the hydroelectric reservoir would be fun. I guess I will just watch the weather.

Enjoy your beautiful Tuesday!

June 14, 2016 Morning

Tonight the sun will set at 8:34 pm with dusk around 9:09 pm, which is 25 seconds later than yesterday. Today will have 15 hours and 18 minutes of daylight, an increase of 24 seconds over yesterday. Monday is fine longest day of the year.

June 13, 2016 9 AM Update

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Currently partly cloudy and 59 degrees in Delmar. There is a west-northwest breeze at 14 mph.

Partly sunny and cool for today. Looking for a high near 70. Northwest wind 15 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. The normal high for today is 77, so it will be a bit cool for this time of year. The record high of 94 happened back in 1892.

Cool but a sunny start to the week. Warmer weather for Tuesday and Wednesday but then rain for Thursday and Friday. Nicer weather for the weekend. I’m looking forward to going to the Gas Up in Gallupville with dad this weekend.

Tonight the sun will set at 8:34 pm with dusk around 9:09 pm, which is 27 seconds later than yesterday. Today will have 15 hours and 17 minutes of daylight, an increase of 29 seconds over yesterday.

Partly cloudy and a bit cool tonight. We will have a low around 51. Northwest wind 8 to 13 mph. The normal low for tonight is 56, so it will be fairly cool for this time of year. The record low of 39 occured back in 1970.

On this day in 1966, the United States Supreme Court rules in Miranda v. Arizona that the police must inform suspects of their rights before questioning them. Also in 1970, “The Long and Winding Road” becomes The Beatles’ last U.S. number one song. And in 1977, Convicted Martin Luther King Jr. assassin James Earl Ray is recaptured after escaping from prison three days before.

There are 1 weeks until the First Day of Summer when the sun will be setting at 8:36 pm with dusk at 9:11 pm. The average high temperature is 79 degrees, with a record high of 97 in 1953. We are almost there this year.

I wish we had better weather this past weekend, but so be it. There is still a lot of summer left to enjoy. I’m sure that there will be 90 degree, sunny weekends left to enjoy at the Potholers and state park pools. Next week most of state parks open for swimming.

I’m looking at heading up to Moose River Plains for Independence Day Weekend. Probably leave Thursday night or maybe early Friday. Depends on the work schedule. Also want to head to the Finger Lakes in mid July, so I can get my tan on at the Watkins Glen pool.
