Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

Drove down to the express bus stop, because I was running late didn’t feel like taking the local downtown. It really isn’t that far from home but I do get tired of taking the local to work.

A fairly nice morning but warm. Then again, springs and autumns simply aren’t as cold as they once were. Anybody who can read the weather records can see the slow Β but steady rise in average temperatures in the Albany area. Very warm tonight – it may break the record for the highest low temperature recorded tonight. Uncomfortable sleeping for sure.Β

Tonight will have showers and thunderstorms likely before 2am, then a slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low of 71 degrees at 4am. 17 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 73 at 6pm. Southwest wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. September 5, 2016 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 65 degrees in Delmar. There is a north breeze at 6 mph. The dew point is 59 degrees. Not a half bad evening for Labor Day.

Had steak at my parent’s house for Labor Day. Enjoyed swimming at Mine Kill State Park and hiking the trails. A beautiful day, caught some great footage on my new dashboard camera. I will upload tomorrow to YouTube when I get somewhere I have enough bandwidth. I did the recommended firmware update on the camera and got several improved features including recording of your speed in miles per hour. Besides the pictures I took at camp, I’ve also started to do some videos and will post some time in the next few days.

Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low of 59 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 59 at 11pm. North wind around 6 mph. The record low of 38 occurred back in 1938. Waxing Crescent Moon tonight with 30% illuminated. The moon will set around 11:52 pm. The First Quarter Moon is on Friday at 11:49 am with chance of t-storms expected. The Full β€œCorn” Moon is on Friday, September 16th at 7:05 pm.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny, and a bit warm with a high of 80 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 64 at 5pm. North wind 7 to 9 mph. The record high of 91 was set in 1983. The sun will rise at 6:26 am with the first light at 5:58 am, which is 1 minutes and 4 seconds later then yesterday.

Looking ahead, Columbus Day is in 5 weeks, Halloween is in 8 weeks, Last Day with 10 Hours of Daylight in Albany is in 9 weeks and Beaver Moon is in 10 weeks.

August 22, 2016 8 AM Update

Now up to 65 degrees on this beautiful Monday. There is a northwest breeze at 15 mph. The dew point is 57 degrees and continuing to drop. Looks like we have a beautiful day on tap followed by a beautiful week and weekend.

I’m not crazy about having to go to work today but you got to make money. The weekend looks great. I’m leaning towards old Betty Brook and Mine Kill Pool for the weekend. Not so far and if I get stuck at work late on Friday, it’s not a big deal. I like to think of work week as the intermission between the weekend.

Gas prices are up a few pennies this morning but may drop again with today’s drop in crude oil prices. The summer driving season is rapidly coming to an end. I know we have two weeks left until Labor Day, the unofficial end of summer.

I fully expect some color on the maples along Muskrat Pond and Indian Lake at Moose River Plains by then, especially with today’s cooler temperatures. We have less than one month until autumn officially starts, and usually peak color at the Moose is the fourth week of September.

August 18, 2016 Evening

Good evening! A decent evening as the shadows grow over Downtown Albany as sunset approaches around 7:50. Around 82 degrees with a modest feeling 65 dew point with a westerly breeze.

Today was a decent day with things generally working out after several cups of coffee. Sometimes people can be jerks but you have to just shake it off. Sometimes things a just glitches and they work out in the end. We will see.

August 17, 2016 9 AM Update

On this day in 1977, the Soviet icebreaker Arktika becomes the first surface ship to reach the North Pole.Β Part of it was they built stronger ice breakers and it was a warmer summer, part of it was climate change.

And in 1982, the first Compact Discs (CDs) are released to the public in Germany. Happy sterile listening, although at least you could play the same song over and over again, without wearing out the record grooves.

August 17, 2016 8 AM Update

Rapidly clearing this morning. Increasing blue skies and warming up slightly with a low dew point. Nice breeze.  After all the hazy, hot and humid weather lately this is quite nice for a change. Going to stay nice through the weekend it would appear.

Nice walk down to the bus stop without the gross humidity of last night. I literally got soaked from the humidity on my evening walk. I really should have taken a shower before bed, I was sweaty. Only one other person on the bus today.

Farmers Market day at the Empire State Plaza today. I really should stop by and get some good eats. This time of year, the farmers market is more like a well stocked grocery store with all the good eats.

Tomorrow is Thursday. The weekend is rapidly approaching
