Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

November 22, 2016 6 AM Update

Good morning! Today is the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Going to be a rather cold one. Mostly cloudy and 30 degrees in Delmar. Breezy, 17 mph breeze from the west-northwest. I can here the wind whipping around outside.   The current wind chill is 18.

Watch out for the snow band stuck over the Northern Catskills. Should it push north it could mean a messy commute. Otherwise,  we are looking at skies clearing around 8 am.

For today we will continue to have a slight chance of snow showers before noon. Partly sunny, with a high of 35 degrees at 1pm. 10 degrees below normal. With the wind it will feel much colder.   Breezy, with a northwest wind 16 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Bundle up as you head out today….

Last year, mostly cloudy with a high around 51. The record high of 70 was set in 1931. There was 9.1 inches of snow back in 1943.

November 21, 2016 Evening

Good evening! All I can say is brrr….  Cloudy and 34 degrees in Delmar. Breezy, 24 mph breeze from the west-northwest with gusts up to 44 mph. The current wind chill is 22. The skies will clear tomorrow around 8 am.

All I can say is I’m glad that the 719 bus is running on time. It’s cold enough tonight with the wind that had the bus been more than a few minutes late, I would have returned to the lobby of the building and just caught the local home.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 30 degrees at 4am. One degree below normal. West wind 13 to 17 mph. One year ago, mostly cloudy with a low around 34. The record low of 9 occurred back in 1969.

In four weeks on December 19 the sun will be setting at 4:24 pm, which is 2 minutes earlier then tonight. The average high is 35 degrees, and the record for that date is 54 degrees was set back in 1895.

It certainly is dark taking the bus home from work. The sunsets a lot earlier in Albany then in Western NY. I really don’t like it especially on the Delmar bypass, when it’s so dark and you can not see out the windows from the lit inside bus. That said, my phone is keeping me busy and city lights are somewhat pretty for the evening commute.

Continuing to research laptops. I am having second thoughts the Lenovo Flexpad aka Yoga 710 that caught my eye at the store about a month ago. It apparently has various issues with Linux out of the box that can be mitigated but it requires a lot of work arounds including patching the BIOS and tweaking the kernel. Some of the Linux drivers are also buggy on the machine because it’s relatively new and different. I don’t mind doing that stuff long as it works. A bigger issue for me personally is the screen is difficult to replace compared to conventional laptops. And knowing how good that I am at breaking screens and shit more generally, makes it a bit of a non starter for me. I may research other more conventional laptops that can easily swap hard drives and buy a 512 GB SSD hard drive and install it.

It’s going to start snowing again shortly, so I really don’t want to go out especially with the cold. It would be a bad night to slide off the road or breakdown. Granted it’s not as harsh as mid January but it sure ain’t nice with the wind. I hope I didn’t turn the heat down too much before leaving home this morning.

I finally took action last night to clear out the drain in the bath tub. It had been getting slower over time, so I bought some drain cleaner and with the plunger, and now it’s mostly restored to full flow at draining. It’s not perfect, but it’s better. I might get more drain cleaner and try cleaning it again in another week in an attempt to make it drain as fast as the shower water comes down, but I don’t expect it work perfectly with the marginal plumbing in my shitty little apartment in the suburbs.

Also been doing some general cleaning and sprucing up around. Maybe will do more tonight.  Still have some camping gear left to unpack. The cooler still needs to be cleaned, but most of the gear is done. Hit a few mildew spots in the kitchen with some bleach and try to get things cleaned up because things are a bit musty from the time I spent gone, and because my apartment is cheap and awful. But it sure is nice being able to walk around town and catch the bus to work.

I don’t expect to be driving Big Red that much now that winter is upon us, except to go out to my parents house for Sunday dinner and occasional camping, hiking, and hunting trips in the wilderness. Big Red does need a bath some point from the mud of the previous trip and now the road salt from driving home last night.

November 21, 2016 9 AM Update

Good morning! Talk about a chilly November day. They don’t make many like this anymore. Mostly cloudy and we’ve warmed up a degree to 32 degrees in Delmar. Still pretty frigid for November especially with the wind whipping around. Breezy, 18 mph breeze from the west-northwest with gusts up to 32 mph. The current wind chill is 20. The skies will clear tomorrow around 4 pm.

Today’s forecast has little to cheer for especially in the mountains where they have gotten a lot of snow. In the city we’ve only got a dusting which has  will have a chance of snow showers, mainly before 3pm. Cloudy, with a high of 35 degrees at 12pm. 10 degrees below normal. Windy, with a west wind 18 to 28 mph, with gusts as high as 48 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

The sun will set at 4:27 pm with dusk around 4:58 pm, which is 41 seconds earlier than yesterday. Today will have 9 hours and 31 minutes of daylight, a decrease of 1 minutes and 53 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 30 degrees at 3am. Two degrees below normal. Breezy, with a west wind 14 to 20 mph. One year ago, mostly cloudy with a low around 34. The record low of 9 occurred back in 1969.

Listening to Thomas Rhett’s Beer with Jesus, which seems appropriate as the bus grinds downtown. It’s actually comforting to feel the motion of the bus as I return to commuting downtown. While I liked the change of working in North Syracuse, it’s nice to return to normalcy of days gone past. I like the quiet time I have to myself without the dangers of car commuting. The bus though  is kind of warm. Assuming it’s not too frigid, I’ll probably walk down to the express bus come Tuesday.

Thursday is Thanksgiving and I’m hopeful that they will give us Black Friday off as a holiday. If not, that’s fine too. The weather is not expected to be real nice on Friday and the buses are unlikely to crowded or delayed come Friday. It would likely be quiet day. I’ll cross that bridge when it comes.

Have a great day. I’m almost to work….

November 21, 2016 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again on this frigid morning. Cloudy and 31 degrees in Delmar. There is a west-northwest breeze at 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Cold morning. The current wind chill is 20. Brr. Some of the untreated surfaces like sidewalks and driveways may be slick. The skies will clear tomorrow around 4 pm but continued cold.

Today will continue to have a chance of snow showers, mainly before 3pm. Very cold. Cloudy, with a high of 35 degrees at 12pm. 10 degrees below normal. Windy, with a west wind 15 to 20 mph increasing to 23 to 28 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 48 mph. Windchills in the 20s.  Chance of precipitation is 30%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Last year, partly cloudy with a high around 48. The record high of 70 was set in 1931. There was 0.8 inches of snow back in 1937. We won’t break that record in Albany today most likely but who knows, we’ve already gotten a half inch. The mountains and hills around have gotten much more snow.

November 11, 2016 Morning

Good morning! Today is Veterans Day. Thank you to all who have served. Partly cloudy and 47 degrees in Delmar. There is a west-southwest breeze at 10 mph. Red sky in the morning. Showers are expected on and off this morning.

Finishing getting packed for my road trip. Today will be cold today with the wind whipping around but hopefully by the time I reach the Finger Lakes the clouds have will clear. I can hang a tarp to block the wind. From there on subsequent days, heading out to Allegany County then Cattaraugus County then Chautauqua County and Pennsylvania. It seems like it is all coming together now. Everything seems to be going well.

Every time I check it seems like the forecast changes but I’m still not expecting a washout but I do think today will be kind of chilly with unstable weather. But it will get nicer for the weekend.

Veterans Day will be partly sunny, with a high of 48 degrees at 10am. Five degrees above normal. It won’t feel that way with the wind though. Generally   Breezy, with a southwest wind 10 to 15 mph becoming northwest 16 to 21 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph. Last year, cloudy with a high around 51. The record high of 70 was set in 2002. There was 3 inches of snow back in 1906.

Sunset comes early, although it’s about 15 minutes later in the Finger Lakes. Thats one of the reasons I am heading out west for my November trip. The sun will set at 4:35 pm with dusk around 5:05 pm in Albany, which is 1 minute earlier than yesterday. Today will have 9 hours and 52 minutes of daylight, a decrease of 2 minutes and 16 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low of 28 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees below normal. Blustery, with a northwest wind 15 to 20 mph decreasing to 8 to 13 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 31 mph. One year ago, cloudy with a low around 47. The record low of 15 occurred back in 1976.

There are 2 weeks until Buy Nothing Day / Black Friday when the sun will be setting at 4:25 pm with dusk at 4:56 pm. The average high temperature is 44 degrees, with a record high of 64 in 2004.

November 10, 2016 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 40 degrees in Delmar. There is a south breeze at 8 mph. Cool moon lit evening but that is to be expected during the second week of November. Getting packed and watching the PBS Newshour.

Mostly packed for my week long trip to the Finger Lakes, then Western New York and Chautauqua County then down to the Pennsylvania. I don’t have a set agenda but I have a general idea of where I want to go to and a lot will depend on the weather. It was a lot of work to pack, as I didn’t have any of the gear in my truck after spending the past two months working in North Syracuse.  Checked the fluids under the hood, went to the bank, got money and deposited the checks from the insurance overpayment and got most of my clothes packed.

Also donated blood and got a haircut. I like being back home and able to walk everywhere. North Syracuse had sidewalks but where I was staying was a bit too far to walk. Cicero in contrast had no real sidewalks despite the many businesses. Didn’t get my flu shot though. Maybe next week. I should do that sooner than later, it’s easy and important. Needle hurt like a bitch when I was stuck twice to draw blood, mom says it was because I was dehydrated. Drank a lot of beer at the party last night and coffee in the morning but minimal fluids before donating blood. In retrospect that was a mistake.

Getting better at driving after dark. I think driving home after dark most days in North Syracuse made me a much better night driver. That and the moonlight made driving home easy.

Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low of 40 degrees at 10pm. Eight degrees above normal. South wind around 8 mph. One year ago, cloudy with a low around 44. The record low of 15 occurred back in 1956.

Big beautiful Waxing Gibbous Moon tonight with 75% illuminated. The skies are full of moonlight. The moon will set around 4:58 am. The Full β€œBeaver” Moon is on Sunday night with partly cloudy skies expected. A lot of nice moonlit evenings are ahead for sure.

Tomorrow will have isolated showers before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high of 49 degrees at 10am. One degrees below normal. Breezy, with a southwest wind 14 to 22 mph becoming northwest in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 37 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Last year, cloudy with a high around 51. The record high of 70 was set in 2002. There was 3 inches of snow back in 1906. The sun will rise at 6:42 am with the first light at 6:12 am, which is 1 minutes and 15 seconds later then yesterday.

Looking ahead, Thanksgiving is in 2 weeks. Tomorrow is Veterans Day and the Southern Zone opener is one week from Saturday.

November 9, 2016 Evening

Good evening! Fairly heavy rain and 47 degrees in Delmar. There is a north-northwest breeze at 11 mph. The skies will clear around 11 pm. It’s good to be back home. Friday I will be back on the road but this time it will be for a road trip camping, hiking, hunting and photographing the wilds of Western NY and Pennsylvania.

A lot of traffic heading downtown. Back in the big city, the buildings are a lot bigger and the city here in Albany is much more diverse and urban then North Syracuse. I do like not driving my big jacked up truck everywhere and be able to have a few drinks before heading home.

Heading downtown on the bus for the after election party. I have to say I really missed riding the bus to and from work, as it always gives me some quiet time to contemplate my day, the weather and my weekend plan. I’ve been taking the bus back and forth to work for nearly a decade. With the smartphone, it’s so much more compact than bringing my laptop as in years past.

Times certainly change. I’m not totally shocked about the presidential election. Things ended badly for the Democrats in 1968 when they ignored the primarily results and chose Hubert Humphrey. Richard Nixon implemented some controversial policies and troublesome speeches, but given a progressive congress, was often prodded to create some really good laws like the Clean Water Act.

Waxing Gibbous Moon tonight with 68% illuminated. The moon will set around 3:55 am. The Full β€œBeaver” Moon is on Sunday night with mostly cloudy skies expected.

Tonight will have patchy drizzle with isolated showers before 7pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low of 34 degrees at 6am. One degree above normal. Northwest wind 7 to 10 mph. One year ago, mostly cloudy with a low around 36. The record low of 16 occurred back in 1965.

A nice weekend coming up with seasonable temperatures. Saturday, sunny, with a high near 44. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 53. Maximum dew point of 32 at 12pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 49 degrees. Going to be a nice start to my trip, although the weather may foul for the second half but no snow expected at this time.

In four weeks on December 7 the sun will be setting at 4:21 pm, which is 15 minutes earlier then tonight. The average high is 39 degrees, and the record for that date is 65 degrees was set back in 1998. It’s remarkable to think we will basically be in the second week of December in one month. Shortest days of year, although the Christmas lights along the streets offset the dark nights.
