Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.
A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.
In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.
Good evening. The bus stop is shoveled out. The slush pile between the shoveled out shelter and the road was smaller than I thought it was but I nor does anybody else want to walk through such a mess wearing dress shoes or even boots with worn down soles. They really need to pave the road shoulder to the concrete pad in front of the bus stopped. But it’s now scraped down to the mud.
Down to 40 degrees now but we still have a while before things ice on up. 27 degrees before day break. Warming up to 37 degrees by 1 pm tomorrow under Partly Cloudy skies with possible snow showers in the evening. Not going to be a terrible day. Much colder Wednesday and Thursday with the real frigid air due Thursday evening with a low of negative three in the city and on Friday with highs only reaching 18 with wind chills in the single digits or possibly even below zero.
But in the mean time, I got out for my evening walk. A nice evening tonight with a nearly full “Cold” Moon. The full moon is Wednesday night and it will be truly cold then. But not quite as cold as Thursday night. Moonlight at times was bright when the moon came out from under the clouds. With the fresh snow, at times the landscape was almost as bright as day. Made sure to mark that hidden police trap in Waze that I saw while walking.
Almost have made up my mind about the winter coat I will buy. Probably get the same model of Carhartt jacket that I have but alas one not with a broken zipper missing teeth, as many tears, ember holes burnt it, or stains. Not going to get Carhartt brown one, as stain too easy but might get a dark brown like my vest. I can’t wear my dry clean only work jacket in the woods and his year with colder weather expected, I don’t think my vest and hoodie will cut it for winter camping.
Time for bed. Good night. Sunrise tomorrow at 7:16 AM. Days soon will be getting longer.
Good morning! A snowy start to our Monday. Snow and 31 degrees in Delmar. There is a south-southeast breeze at 14 mph. We got about three inches of snow last night. It won’t last with warmer temperatures expected later. The skies will clear around 4 pm.
Look for rain showers and snow before noon, then a slight chance of rain showers between noon and 1pm. High of 41 degrees at 1pm. Five degrees above normal. South wind 8 to 14 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly cloudy skies and a high of 57 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1979. 6.6 inches of snow fell back in 1970.
Good evening! Light snow and 27 degrees in Delmar. There is a south-southeast breeze at 13 mph. The current wind chill is 16. We have about an inch of snow on the ground in Delmar with about two more inches on the way. Warming up to 41 tomorrow so it won’t last.
Tonight will continue to have some light snow before midnight, then snow after midnight. Low of 27 degrees at 10pm. Four degrees above normal. South wind 10 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible. Probably an inch on top of the existing inch by 2 AM, then may be one more by 5 AM. In the city I expect few impacts for commuters by day break. In 2015, it got down to 34 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. The record low of -12 occurred back in 1988.
Waxing Gibbous Moon tonight with 87% illuminated. When the snow lets up the moon light is peaking through an illuminating the snow covered landscape. The moon will set around 7:12 am. The Full βColdβ Moon is on Wednesday night with mostly cloudy skies expected and chance of snow.
Tomorrow will have a mix bag of rain, snow, and sleet, becoming all rain after 10am. High of 41 degrees at 2pm. Four degrees above normal. That should melt all the slop away. South wind 8 to 14 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than one inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly cloudy skies and a high of 57 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1979. 6.6 inches of snow fell back in 1970. Tomorrow won’t be like 1970. The sun will rise at 7:16 am with the first light at 6:44 am, which is 49 seconds later then yesterday.
Mostly fixed the video problems with watching videos on my laptop. Ended up getting two DVDs from the library, one about the geology of America. It was a NOVA special, and quite well done. Watched it for several hours this evening, while I was working on maps with the October 2016 local area unemployment statistics. Interesting stuff. Should have some good maps to post later.
Picked up the groceries I need for the week, took some sinus medication and drank a lot of water (to help avoid getting plugged sinuses), and I’m feeling better. Hopefully I caught it in time and the minor discomfort and aching I had this morning is done and won’t come back come tomorrow after sleeping in bed with my neck back. We’ll see.
Looking ahead, Christmas is in 2 weeks, New Years Day is in 3 weeks, My 34th Birthday is in 7 weeks, Daylight Savings Time is in 13 weeks, Palm Sunday is in 17 weeks, Easter is in 18 weeks, Mother’s Day is in 22 weeks and Father’s Day is in 27 weeks.
Good morning! Today is Sunday, December 11th. Last day of regular season in New York. Two weeks to Christmas.Β It is cold but not unusually cold for mid December. Snow is coming. Partly cloudy and 22 degrees in Delmar. There is a south breeze at 7 mph. The skies will clear tomorrow around 6 pm.
Today will have a chance of light snow, mainly after 4pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high of 31 degrees at 2pm. Six degrees below normal. South wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies and a high of 59 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1952. 4.3 inches of snow fell back in 1970.
The sun will set at 4:22 pm with dusk around 4:54 pm, which is 8 seconds later than yesterday. Today will have 9 hours and 5 minutes of daylight, a decrease of 40 seconds over yesterday. Next Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th are the shortest days of the year with only 9 hours and 2 minutes of day light.
Tonight will snow, mainly after 7pm. Low of 27 degrees at 9pm. Four degrees above normal – but with warm air pushing in that will cut into the snow totals. South wind 10 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible. In 2015, it got down to 34 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. The record low of -12 occurred back in 1988.
I think we are looking at around 4 inches of snow Β between Sunday 7:00 PM and Monday 7:00 AM.Β Not a big storm and indeed the roads may just be wet by the morning commute:
1 inch – 12 AM
2 inches – 2 AM
3 inches – 4 AM
I expect the snow will be mostly gone come midday Monday, as the rain will quickly melt away the snow. It is warm snow and the rain should quickly chew away at it. Monday evening watch out for things icing back up.
As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Christmas when the sun will be setting at 4:28 pm with dusk at 5:00 pm. On that day in 2015, we had rain and temperatures between 59 and 35 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 66 back in 1889.
I’m starting to get my usual December sinus infection / cold. So I’m sure I will feel like I want to die over the next few days. It’s not bad but my nose is congested and the minor body aches last week should have been a warning. But I’ll survive and I’m sure it will be done within the next few days. I’ll see how I feel tomorrow morning before going to work. I hate staying home with no Internet.
While I spend relatively little time home, I can’t wait until the day I get out of this shitty moldy apartment that is located in a good location but really is more of starter, low cost place to live then anything nice. Maybe then I won’t get the sinus infections which have been such a problem since moving here nearly ten years ago. I just wanted that cabin in the woods, preferably not in New York with all the indignities of living in our state.
Today’s plan calls for heading out to the grocery store before it clouds up and threatens to snow. I think we have a bit of time in Albany but I want to be home before the sanders are blasting the roads with salt.
I might go for a walk somewhere in the woods today but that depends on the amount of sun we have later on today. It’s actually warming up a bit with the coming snow and the blue skies are helping with the cold. I don’t want to go too far today though.
I think I have figured out what I want to buy for a casual winter coat, so I will after two years get around to buying that. I will probably go for the Carhart Detroit Jacket in black and wear it with layers below it for extra warmth on the coldest day. Staying away from Carteret brown as that tends to show the stains. That was its unlikely to rip like those polyvinyl choloride jackets that the kids in the city wear.
I also need to make up some more interesting Google or demographic Β maps for the blog. It would be nice if Albany County would finalize their election results so I could use that for mapping. That’s a good use of a cold winter day, after least it keeps me entertained with pretty colors on a cold winter day.
I also need to fix the video on my laptop, which seems like it’s causing some artifacts on the screen ever since I downgraded to the LTS version of Linux. It looks like I just need to install a newer version of the Intel video driver. I also have an issue with audio occasionally skipping but I’m sure that’s easy to fix. But other than that and the sometimes obnoxiously noisy fan the laptop is working great.
Okay, I’m filibustering my day. Time to get going. Have a great day!Β
Good evening! Mostly clear and 15 degrees in Delmar. Calm wind. Cold but not that cold with the slack wind.
