Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

At this point we are down to 23 degrees as the cold air continues to push in. Definitely winter like out there, although the wind hasn’t really picked up much yet. 14 degrees by morning.

Tomorrow will be cold as promised. SomeΒ snow showers, mainly after 5pm. Partly sunny, with a high of 21 degrees at 11am. 15 degrees below normal. Wind chill values as low as -1. December 14, 2016 Evening

Good evening! Mostly clear and 27 degrees in Albany. There is a west-southwest breeze at 8 mph. The frigid air is coming but it’s not here yet. Don’t worry, it’s still coming.

Tonight will have some scattered snow showers, mainly after 2am. Mostly cloudy, with temperatures dropping throughout the night with a low of 14 degrees expected around 6am. Seven degrees below normal. Southwest wind 6 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2015, it got down to 42 degrees with periods of rain. The record low of -8 occurred back in 1874.

Waning Gibbous Moon tonight with 91% illuminated. The moon will . The Last Quarter Moon will be tonight with partly cloudy skies expected. The Full β€œWolf” Moon is on Wednesday night.

Tomorrow will have some widely scattered snow showers, mainly after 5pm. Partly sunny, with a high of 21 degrees at 11am. 15 degrees below normal. So the mercury will move up very slightly. Wind chill values as low as -1. Breezy, with a west wind 14 to 24 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph. Albany cops should sit in heated police cruisers and mail God speeding tickets for his wind downtown. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. A year ago, we had rain and a high of 61 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 2015. 8.2 inches of snow fell back in 1968. We got the cold, now God just needs to push some moisture northward. Maybe Saturday? I don’t like weekend snow storms because they impact my weekend plans.

Why can’t it only snow on week days? God, I may be one of the few people with such an attitude.

Not a particularly nice weekend on tap but not as snowy as first expected. Saturday, snow before 1pm, then rain. High near 37. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Sunday, rain likely before 1pm, then a chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 41. Chance of precipitation is 60%.Typical average high for the weekend is 35 degrees.

In four weeks on January 11 the sun will be setting at 4:43 pm, which is 20 minutes later then tonight. A least the sunsets are later. In 2016 on that day, we had snow and temperatures between 37 and 17 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 30 and 14 degrees. Coldest time of the year. The record high of 57 degrees was set back in 1975.

Been trying to develop some new and interesting content for the blog lately. I downloaded some new Shapefiles for making small scale maps showing the entire country for the blog today, and also got county level data relating to the US Presidental Election. Lots of maps and analytics coming on that. Albany County still hasn’t posted final Election Results from 2016, so I can’t make pretty county level maps.

Tonight I’m going down to the library to work on a few more projects and continue to research winter jackets. Maybe make up a few more maps although I still have quite a few ready to go. Probably skipping the evening walk tonight as it’s going to be much too cold.

I probably should go out shopping tonight to get the ingredients I need for cooking for the holiday brunch at work but alas that will likely get held off until tomorrow because I’m a procrastinating. Hopefully Big Red will start in the cold.

Put the digital TV box in a separate extension cord, so hopefully it will be plugged in and tape the PBS News hour every night. The converter box only uses a few watts when it’s shut off.

December 14, 2016 morning

Good morning! Happy Hump Day. 17 days until New Years Evening and a week and a half until Christmas. Kind of a dark start to our morning with sunrise not until 7:18.

Mostly cloudy and 33 degrees now. Some sun in the morning, more clouds later with colder air pushing in and gradually declining temperatures in the mid 20s by evening then only 16 degrees come tomorrow morning.

Much colder tomorrow with temperatures expected to only decline with a low around one degree come Friday morning. More sun on Thursday and Friday but a cold north wind combined with low mercury will make for some rather cold weather. Warming up for the snow storm on Saturday and rain on Sunday, highs around 40 for Sunday as the arctic blast pushes north.

December 13, 2016 Night

Well, good evening. How was your day? Mine was good, I had dinner at the Asian Tea House bistro with the parents then went out to Capital Lights in the Park. Definitely got a lot more lights there in the park then years past. Makes me want to walk over to the park and down to the Lake House and walk around the lake to photograph them.

Cloudy and 36 degrees now in Delmar. Light breeze from the south. Went for my evening walk around the block and it’s not a bad evening out there. Full cold moon is not visible behind the clouds. Shoveled around the driveway to clean up a bit around my truck, but I was pleasantly surprised to see the landlord had plowed the driveway. A low around 27 is expected tonight. Much colder tomorrow night, so I’m glad I did my evening walk today.

I was hoping to tape the PBS Newshour but that was not to be, as the power strip that the DTV converter box was plugged in was unplugged. Tomorrow I’ll catch the News Hour. Tonight I’ll just listen to the BBC News as I go to bed on New England Public Radio.

If we are lucky with the sun by 1 pm tomorrow, we may reach 30. But otherwise look for a cold temperature with that arctic blast coming in with temperatures dropping to 15 by evening. Sunrise tomorrow is at 7:17 AM in Albany.

A few special days to look forward to in the coming weeks include Valentines Day is in 9 weeks, Spring is in 14 weeks, Average High is 50 is in 15 weeks, Tax Day is in 18 weeks, Average High is 70 is in 22 weeks and Independence Day is in 29 weeks.

December 13, 2016 8 AM Update

Good morning! Happy Tuesday.Β Mostly cloudy and 33 degrees in Delmar. There is a west breeze at 6 mph. Looking at the Heldebergs from the Park and Ride, with the clouds and snow, looks very wintery. A bit of sun is peaking out now, more is expected to push through later, before clouding up with snow showers in the evening.

Figured I better walk down to the Park and Ride today,Β Β as with the cold that is coming tomorrow, I suspect today will be last day of the week I’ll be walking down there. Maybe not. I’ve done the walk in 12 below, but the wind is the big question. I must prefer to walk down to the express, just for the exercise and the smoother ride on the express bus, but I won’t do it if the weather is too miserable or I have to wear my suit to work. Wore the blaze-orange Thermaline hoodie that I love, not because it’s pretty, it’s not, but it’s so warm. Really too warm for today, but I didn’t want to wear my fancy over coat, and still haven’t gotten my winter coat yet.

Today will have a slight chance of snow showers after 3pm. Partly cloudy, with a high of 38 degrees at 1pm. One degrees above normal. But enjoy it while it lasts. Frigid weather comes this evening. West wind 5 to 7 mph becoming south in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had rain and a high of 52 degrees. The record high of 58 was set in 1984. 14 inches of snow fell back in 1915.Β By any standard, that’s a lot of snow.

The sun will set at 4:22 pm with dusk around 4:54 pm, which is 13 seconds later than yesterday. Now a minute later, at least in the sense of the minute hand for the sunset. No longer 4:21 pm sunset.Β Today will have 9 hours and 4 minutes of daylight, a decrease of 32 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of snow showers, mainly before 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low of 26 degrees at 6am. Two degrees above normal. South wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. In 2015, it got down to 44 degrees with periods of rain. The record low of -5 occurred back in 1898.

Looking ahead to February, there are 9 weeks until Valentines Day when the sun will be setting at 5:27 pm with dusk at 5:55 pm. On that day in 2016, we had sunny skies and temperatures between 8 and -13 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 34 degrees. We hit a record high of 63 back in 1946. Tuesday holidays are pretty rare, although Valentines Day really isn’t a holiday in the sense you don’t get it off from work.

Very happy about the second laptop charger that I got for my laptop. I ordered it on Friday and it was at my door yesterday afternoon, mailed from California. Pretty nice. Like the ad said on Ebay, it’s clearly a genuine HP charger just like the on it came with. Supposedly refurbished but it was packaged like it was brand new. Fit and works perfectly. Now I don’t have to bring the charger back and forth to work.

December 13, 2016 Morning

Good morning. Happy Tuesday. Kind of a dark start to the morning with cloudy skies with temps around freezing. As expected the driveway is quite icy but with more sun and highs around 36 degrees later, much is expected to melt away. Snow showers in the evening, then the cold starts pushing in on Wednesday.
