Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

December 6, 2016 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday.  Sunny and 34 degrees in Delmar. Calm wind. A very morning for December. If I didn’t have to dress up for work, I probably would have taken the express to work and walked down to the Park and Ride.

Today will be mostly sunny, with a high of 40 degrees at 1pm. A very nice day. One degree above normal. Light and variable wind. A year ago, we had fog and a high of 39 degrees. The record high of 68 was set in 2001. 12.5 inches of snow fell back in 2003.

The sun will set at 4:22 pm with dusk around 4:53 pm, which is 5 seconds earlier than yesterday. Today will have 9 hours and 10 minutes of daylight, a decrease of 1 minutes and 1 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of rain and snow before 9pm, then snow likely. Cloudy, with a low of 34 degrees at 9pm. Nine degrees above normal. Southeast wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. In 2015, it got down to 26 degrees with periods of fog. The record low of -7 occurred back in 1901.

There is  1 month until Epiphany, (12th Day of Christmas) when the sun will be setting at 4:38 pm with dusk at 5:09 pm. The average high temperature is 32 degrees, with a record high of 61 in 1895. The last of the Christmas lights will be shut off and the harsh winter weather will be upon us.

That podcast I shared earlier today on the blog about the fake news industry, is pretty interesting. There is a lot of money to be made off of conspiracy nuts. Its rather amazing to see what ideologues believe in our country, fact or fiction. And apparently if you’re an ideologue, you’ll believe anything as long as it demonizes your political opponents. At least most of our elected officials are somewhat more level headed.

Been looking at ordering Oxford shirts from Sears online. I just like how they fit but Sears usually has limited ones in stocks locally when I go there. Online I’ll have to pay shipping unless I order at least four shirts to spend more than $50. I got to think about it. Economy shipping is only $3, less than gas to Sears. And they’re one sale for $16 through Friday, which is a good price compared to the $18-20 range that they often are.

I am still liking the weekend forecast for camping, and maybe hunting and hiking, although in the Adirondacks it will feel more like January than December. Without the wind and lots of sun it shouldn’t be too bad. A couple of inches are expected of snow on the ground but that’s fine, I’ll shovel out a parking spot and my campsite.

Going to be a nice day. Get out and enjoy it if you can. It’s been a while since we’ve had a nice sunny day like today.

December 4, 2016 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 26 degrees in Delmar. Calm wind. It’s cool out there but not too bad without the wind.

Tonight will snow, mainly after 3am. Low of 26 degrees at 10pm. Typical for tonight. Warming up as the snow pushes in. Roads might be slick come morning. Calm wind becoming southeast 5 to 7 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of around an inch possible. In 2015, it got down to 27 degrees under partly cloudy skies. The record low of 2 occurred back in 1989.

Waxing Crescent Moon tonight with 36% illuminated. The moon will set around 11:21 pm. The First Quarter Moon is on Tuesday night with mostly cloudy expected. The Full β€œCold” Moon is on Wednesday, December 14th. Not a terrible night to get out and enjoy it.

With the crappy weather on tap, I made sure to have everything I needed for the week. I don’t plan to drive until Saturday. I thought I was low on toilet paper but I had a box tucked away. Good for shitter paper through spring time. Also have lots of food and supplies so I should be good.

So new maps return to the blog. Finally got QGIS back up and running properly on my blog. Stay away from Quantum GIS on Ubuntu 16.10, the Python SIP library or something else is broken on it. After deleting my hard drive and downgrading to 16.04 long term support, I’m back in business. I made a bunch of maps, I’ll be featuring them on the blog in the coming weeks. Few things at least when I’m stuck inside make me happy compared to making maps. It’s a way of exploring places and remembering memories while playing with the mapping software.

Spent too much time today working on maps and writing and debugging PyGIS code for map making. The weather turned out to be fairly raw today and didn’t clear out to late. It kind of sucked, so I didn’t do anything walking or hiking today. Think I’m getting away from the health kick but I hope to be back at it this week.

It’s December so I’ve been having problems with sleeping. Dug out the dim red light bulb, killed all the other lights in my apartment and took a sleeping pill. Hopefully I won wake up mid night and stuck awake or have a nightmare where I’m stuck living in the city for the rest of my life and I can never go to the country, never see another farm or the countryside again.

Definitely a beautiful drive with the hills and mountains driving out to museums parents house for Sunday dinnerΒ via Selkirk Road and Copeland Hill Road. Haven’t been that way in a long time and it was getting close to dusk after a day when it had finally cleared on out. Β I miss living out in the sticks, although I certainly spend a lot of time camping out there. Eventually though, I’ll own a house out there but I don’t want to put down roots in New York with the gun laws and the burn ban.

At one level I wish I had gone to the Adirondacks as it would have made the weekend seem more meaningful and memorable but I didn’t. Saved a lot of money by staying in town. It would have been pretty cold camping in the wilderness.

Tomorrow will snow before 10am, then rain and snow likely between 10am and 11am, then a chance of rain after 11am. High of 40 degrees at 1pm. Typical for Tomorrow. Southeast wind 7 to 10 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies and a high of 47 degrees. The record high of 65 was set in 2001. 9 inches of snow fell back in 1902. The sun will rise at 7:10 am with the first light at 6:38 am, which is 59 seconds later then yesterday.

Looking ahead, Christmas is in 3 weeks, New Years Day is in 4 weeks, My 34th Birthday is in 8 weeks, Average High is 40 is in 3 months, Daylight Savings Time is in 14 weeks, Palm Sunday is in 18 weeks, Easter is in 19 weeks, Mother’s Day is in 23 weeks, Father’s Day is in 28 weeks and Independence Day is in 7 months. Of all those holidays, I can’t wait for independence Day. Sparklers are fun!Β

Good night. Those sleeping pills are kicking in.Β

December 2, 2016 8 AM Update

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Five weeks to Epiphany. Partly cloudy and 36 degrees in Delmar. There is a west-southwest breeze at 10 mph. Some sun this morning but it’s not expected to last. More sun on SUNday. The skies will clear tomorrow around 8 pm.

Taking the yokel local bus to work today, because I couldn’t get an early start. Which kind of sucks, because next week I’ll have to dress up and will be taking the local most of the week. I guess it really doesn’t matter because my phone keeps me entertained on the bus.

Today will have a slight chance of showers after 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high of 47 degrees at 1pm. Six degrees above normal. West wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had rain and a high of 50 degrees. I guess depressing early December weather is not unusual.  The record high of 66 was set in 1998. 6.2 inches of snow fell back in 1949.

The sun will set at 4:22 pm with dusk around 4:54 pm, which is 14 seconds earlier than yesterday. Today will have 9 hours and 14 minutes of daylight, a decrease of 1 minutes and 16 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of rain showers before 11pm, then a chance of rain and snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low of 34 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees above normal. West wind around 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. In 2015, it got down to 38 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. The record low of -1 occurred back during the spirit of 1976.

As previously noted, there are 5 weeks until Epiphany when the sun will be setting at 4:38 pm with dusk at 5:09 pm. On that day in 2016, we had mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 34 and 5 degrees. Cold day even for late December. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 71 back in 2007. So it’s not always that cold in late December.

Today in 1970, the law went into effect that created the US Environmental Protection agency. Much like the creation of the state’s DEC it was a reorganization of various federal agencies to consolidate many environmental functions into one agency based on increased concern and awareness of industrial pollution.

29 days and 15 hours left in 2016. Make the most of it. Have a great Friday, we are almost to the weekend…

December 1, 2016 Morning

Good morning! Happy December! Only 30 days and 15 hours of 2016 left. The State of New York sent me a letter reminding me I have only a few weeks left to give to my niece’s 527 account and deduct it from my 2016 state taxes. It’s not like an IRA, you can’t back date contributions up to April 15th.

This morning is still mostly cloudy and 47 degrees in Delmar. Breezy, 16 mph breeze from the west. The skies will clear around 7 pm.

Today will have a slight chance of showers after 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high of 49 degrees at 12pm. Eight degrees above normal. West wind 13 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had rain and a high of 43 degrees. The record high of 67 was set in 1934. 3.7 inches of snow fell back in 1969.

I woke up at 6:30, went downstairs and took a piss and subsequently fell back asleep until quarter to eight. Last Thursday was Thanksgiving so I had turned it off. Evidently I’m taking the Route 18 Yokel Local bus to work. The weather looked kind of threatening to walk down to the express from the Park and Ride.

The sun will set at 4:22 pm with dusk around 4:54 pm, which is 18 seconds earlier than yesterday. Today will have 9 hours and 15 minutes of daylight, a decrease of 1 minutes and 21 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 35 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees above normal. West wind 7 to 11 mph. In 2015, it got down to 41 degrees with periods of rain. The record low of -2 occurred back in 1875.

There is 1 month until New Years Day when the sun will be setting at 4:33 pm with dusk at 5:05 pm. The average high temperature is 32 degrees, with a record high of 61 in 1895. Then we will have to remember to date all those memorandums with 2017. Time goes by so quickly.

Today in 1824, the Electoral College picks the winner of the presidential race. Since no candidate received a majority of the total electoral college votes in the election, the United States House of Representatives is given the task of deciding the winner in accordance with the Twelfth Amendment to the United States Constitution.
